The Japanese market VG-10 plain Edge Spyderco Harpy.

To me this thread has made it more than obvious that there is a demand for plain edged Hawkbill blades and especially a PE Harpy model. They offered up a PE H-1 Spyderhawk when that model returned to the main line up. So doesn't it make sense to offer the standard, stainless handled Harpy model in PE & SE both?

I have several PE Hawkbills of Spyderco's and will admit that I personally don't use the PE versions much>> but I do know people who do use them and prefer them. On the other side of the coin I'll never figure out why they made the SUPERHAWK model in PE but never made it available in Spyderedge when every other Hawkbill they ever made were all available in SE. I would love to see the return of a PE Harpy and a Spyderedged SUPERHAWK.

You can get the plain edge VG-10 stainless steel Harpy from GSakai , JD. The new ones have a four way mounting clip. Personally , l would like to see one of these in S35VN.

in carbon fiber or g-10? how does one contact GSakai anyway. This weekend I added a used harpy from ebay and bought 1 tasman in black and 1 in yellow both PE. I always said I wouldnt buy spyderco knives except the harpy but ive been converted. real hawkbill kick atm

If you have a smartphone , then get a translator app. Or get an " English to Japanese " dictionary. Go to the GSakai website. Go to Spyderco knives. You will see dozens of pictures of knives. Find the C08P and " add to cart " .
P.S : They are neither carbon fiber or G-10 , the handles are stainless steel.

The VG-10 is fine for me because I tend to like VG-10 as a daily user blade. I thought that Japanese knife seller still had them for sale. As much as I like the TASMAN I still like the HARPY much better because of the extra bulk and ridgidity that the HARPY has.

For a long time you could still get the stainless handled RESCUE models through that same source. If you ever want one of the Spyderedged Rescue models I highly recommend the stainless handled version of that great model. Like I've said in the past I used serrated Hawkbills most of the time but I am glad that the HARPY is available in PE.

mine just arrived from japan, cant wait to get home from work and open that thing

I like the Harpy too. Whenever possible , l opt for stainless steel handles. They just feel more beefy. The exception would apply for my G-10 harpy.

Could you please email me the contact information you used to get in touch with them? Was it by email or phone or website? I tried on the g Sakai website but couldn't get through. Thank you.

I bought it from the edge, but it seems I may have grabbed the last one. its saying sold out on their site I also asked if I could buy two but they only had the one. Heres the site http://www.ohyasuya.co.jp/aigo/indexeng.html

wait what site did you get your ss PE harpy? I have one nib soon, a few more wont hurt
I got mine DIRECTLY from GSAKAI . I just did a quick search of the website right now and l don't see the plain edge Harpy anymore. It's sad really. If only you had asked this question last year. I would suspect that lack of user demand ultimately did 'em in.

andd they sent the wrong knife its serrated :(
Damn ! That is some real bad luck . Are you planning to send the knife back ? I know a couple of custom knife makers that can re grind serrated blades in PE , if you really want a PE Harpy THAT bad. I think Tom krein used to do it. Custom knife maker Jay fisher used to re grind serrated knives into Plain edge. But l haven't spoken to him in years .

A lot of people ignorantly say that it was a carbon fiber handle Harpy which Dr. Lectern used , but they all seem to forget that CF Harpies were only made in 2005 , FOUR years after this movie was released. It couldn't have been a VG-10 knife since VG-10 was first used on the Harpy in 2002 , a FULL YEAR after Hannibal was released and two years before it was shot in 2000. Thus the knife had to be either ATS-55 or Gin1. The knife in Hannibal props museum Clearly shows a black non - metal handle , which could only be G-10 , because it was the only non metallic handle material used on the Harpy prior to 2001. G-10 Harpies are only serrated edge , so l added two plus two and realized that it was a serrated G-10 harpy. It's more accurate to the books too , where ALL of Dr. Lecter's spyderco knives ( Harpy , civilian and military ) are specifically stated to be serrated. I see no reason for the film crew to deviate from the Book Lecter's preference for serrated blades.

I've never seen a G-10 handled Harpy, ....I believe that you guys were referring to the discontinued Spyderco Merlin, with the Black FRN Handle and was available in both the S.E. and the P.E. versions... BTB.

G-10 Harpies exist man. I have one. They were only made from 1997 to 1998. The 1997 ones were Gin 1. The 1998 ones were ATS-55.

Here's a photo of one, in ATS-55, along with an older all stainless PE Harpy and a 2nd generation PE Merlin...

I will. The proprietor of the store said his subordinate messed up. And I said I did keep cause it would be too much to send back. He said hed refund all costs, because reliance is more important than money. I actually have a used harpy that i bought on the bay coming and might regrind it myself, not that I have any experience regrinding knives but Im just curious. I have a few tasmans in plane edge coming from ebay. was gonna buy one more as a carry. but then i spent over 700 on knives already this month, might as well cool it :o
