The Japanese market VG-10 plain Edge Spyderco Harpy.

Alright , its been confirmed. i am ordering one . ina month time i shall be the proud owner of a Japanese VG-10 plain edge C08P Spyderco Harpy. when i get it its gonna replace my serrated harpy as an edc

any chance they still got some more?

how recent was this?
I got mine last July , 2014. I want to warn you about something though. Hawkbills tend to function more efficiently with serrations. The proof is that l have an SE ATS-55 G-10 Harpy and it outperforms the PE VG-10 SS harpy in every area.

I understand that, but I have absolutely no desire to use this knife at all unless necessary. Ive always wanted it because it was such a poignant movie prop. I already have the harpy in se, and the tasman salt is coming in PE. Ive always said there are precious few spydercos id even consider because I never liked how the spyder hole made the blade shape, only exception being the harpy. Also considering buying used harpys on ebay and grinding out the serrations. there are a few on the bay atm actually!

Umm , I'm not sure which movie you mean , but the one in Hannibal ( 2001) was a serrated G-10 Harpy . Like you , l always used to think that Lecter used a plain edge stainless steel one , butt then l realized that the screen used knife was a serrated G-10 model.

is that right?! ive always been confused if it was serrated or pe, ss or something else. I always thought it was polished, like it was modded to appear more sinister. thank you for correcting! i managed to contact the edge in japan and its shipping to me soon. for something that had maybe 5 seconds total of screen time, it was very eye catching.

You're welcome , man. I love the Hannibal Lecter films too. In fact , that's how l got introduced to spyderco. If you want to see the screen used knife , then visit the website " Hannibal props museum " . Then search for Spyderco Stunt knife.

Precisely the film that introduced me to spyderco knives! At the time i didnt think much of it cause I was just a teenager and thought, boy I wish I can buy that knife. Of course that was when the getting was good, now youll never find the PE on ebay, ive been watching for a month now. Even when I finished college and got a job, all I would see are the spyderco page and bladeforum posts that say check the japanese markets, its your only chance. http://thehannibalpropsmuseum.blogs...0+02:00&max-results=20&start=20&by-date=false even here it still looks like a plain edge! deceiving!

The knife in the stills from "Hannibal" looks like an all stainless Harpy, possibly PE. However, what's odd is that the knife that site is claiming was the prop looks like a Civilian, only full flat ground.

A lot of people ignorantly say that it was a carbon fiber handle Harpy which Dr. Lectern used , but they all seem to forget that CF Harpies were only made in 2005 , FOUR years after this movie was released. It couldn't have been a VG-10 knife since VG-10 was first used on the Harpy in 2002 , a FULL YEAR after Hannibal was released and two years before it was shot in 2000. Thus the knife had to be either ATS-55 or Gin1. The knife in Hannibal props museum Clearly shows a black non - metal handle , which could only be G-10 , because it was the only non metallic handle material used on the Harpy prior to 2001. G-10 Harpies are only serrated edge , so l added two plus two and realized that it was a serrated G-10 harpy. It's more accurate to the books too , where ALL of Dr. Lecter's spyderco knives ( Harpy , civilian and military ) are specifically stated to be serrated. I see no reason for the film crew to deviate from the Book Lecter's preference for serrated blades.

Every time i watch hannibal, i always go look up the knife to see if theres any new info. I believe it would follow the book as well. Lecter's definitely a serrated blade guy! PE just looks much cleaner to me. For sheer damage and cutting ability tho, I would agree that SE is the way to go. Actually looking forward to seeing my tasman's PE and my PE harpy come in. The japanese site said its shipped!

I noticed the same thing too , Mr. Deacon. I always assumed that they used this ( rubber) prop only in the scene where Lecter slashes The hitnan's throat. But assuming it's a prop version of the harpy it the film , then l think it's safe to say that it's a stand in for a G-10 harpy , since the prop clearly has G-10. Regarding the serrations , l do see serrations on the blade in the stills from Hannibal.

right, i thought they would mod one just for it, theres a moment where he holds the blade up, and even the spyder hole looks a little different. when he goes "bowels in or bowels out?" you can see the g-10 on that one, but the blade looks more refined than the serrated

I've looked at those stills, and a whole bunch of others, including some I snapped myself. I'm still on the fence about serrations but, IMHO, several of the stills clearly show that the knife in them is an all stainless Harpy. In particular, the still in the lower left of the collage, where you're looking at the bottom edge of the handle.

Could be. Or it could be G-10 in the moonlight .

yeah it depends on which angle one looks at. some movies do that tho, switchblade changes from a swivel bolster to a rizzuto and then back in a certain movie

This thread has officially entered the realm of "what colour is that dress"

Could you please email me the contact information you used to get in touch with them? Was it by email or phone or website? I tried on the g Sakai website but couldn't get through. Thank you.
