The Keyboard-Commando's EDC

View attachment 782180 I never know when I will have to strip some wire or crack a bottle of wine. Also never know when someone will bring a watermelon or a cake to work. The push me pull you flashlight puts out as much as 110 lumens and is at home in a pocket or on a baseball cap. The abalone round head does not rile the bleeple. My wardrobe is predicated on a plethora of pockets.
My EDC may be changing as they have legalized automatics here in Michigan. So many gadgets, so little time.

My office is the cab of a Mack RD truck. My knife comes out when I'm stuck in gridlock traffic going nowhere, and I fiddle/admire it to pass the time. Oh...once in a while I cut some random thing that needs cutting.

I used to buy and carry knives that were over the top for my work, but no more. For work I have about SAK sized slippie and for free time something smaller like case peanut size. I do carry multitool though and I have mora at work that I keep only in my working place.

I miss the days of being able to carry into work, and discussing new purchases with the president of the company.

Current company forbids exposed blade knives on property, even multitools that have a blade. Flash light I do carry is just a small pocket maglite.
Don't ned a knife, screwdriver, or pliers every day, but when I do need one, it turns into an adventure..

IT security engineer here.

- Flashlight
- Leatherman Squirt
- Small Boxcutter
- Folder

My Leatherman Squirt is my most used EDC item.

My job involves opening lots of packages and boxes of supplies, as well as breaking said boxes down for disposal, so I use whatever knives I'm carrying quite a bit throughout the work week. Granted, I don't "need" a fancy automatic or a Cold Steel XL folder to accomplish these tasks, but I use them anyway, because I'm a knife knut. I also work alone, so there's no one there to give me grief for carrying a scary tacticool knife, and I live in a place where I can legally carry whatever knives I want. Life is good.

why use a tiny winey blade to open the mail box when you've got your XL by your side? :D

I don't use my edc items everyday but when i do need to use them i'm glad I have them. Also im in the military reserves so a knife or multitool get used day in and day out during drill.

Keyboard/Kitchen Commando, reporting for roll call.

Did IT, but currently playing "house spouse." It's surprising how often overgrowth can impede a stroller or a bicycle path.

My mantra:
Keys, wallet, cellphone, and

Handy wipes and those tiny rolls of doggy bags aren't usually that far behind either.

Anyone who thinks oranges (or apples) don't taste better sliced nicely is just crazy. I'm sorry. It had to be said.

I've had people at the office comment on both the Delica and Leatherman Wave; to avoid an indecent I don't pull out any knife at work, not even a small SAK. But I'm a medical coder and work from home most of the time, I just have to stop in there for meetings and such.

I've had jobs, volunteered, or trained in all sorts of fields... lab, ambulance, factory, surgery, hotel, property management.. not in that order.

For every job, it was paramount to have the right tools, whether required for the task or in case of unforseen emergencies. Almost every single one of those jobs had proper tools on site, of which I preferred to use over a personal knife or MT (except one job as a kid where I had to buy my own box cutter).

Generally speaking, if I am in a working environment where I know I'll need certain tools, I still bring those specific tools. That being said, my small day to day needs are often made easier with a small knife, screwdriver, bottle opener, and pliers.

At one point I was down to a Gerber Curve on my key ring, and the flashlight on my phone (I hate the fact that my Galaxy S3 has better speakers and flashlight than every newer generation). Personally, I decided that if I was going to carry anything larger than those items, I would want them to be more comfortable and capable for occasional larger and longer jobs that I might not expect, or had forgotten to bring my proper tools.

Therefore, my casual EDC for the last few years has included a thicker/comfortable handled knife with no particular blade length, a pliers based MT (Juice being my favorite), and a "roll of dimes" sized flashlight. It's nice to know, though that for 90% of my everyday needs, I could still get away with just my LM Squirt and cell phone flashlight.

Have small knives that I change out as my mood changes, but almost always a SA Alox knife or a small Buck, lately a small 3 blade stockman or the small pen knife that came with it as a combo from Wallie World. Does the small jobs, but unfortunately they are 420j2 Chinese made, but it will not make me cry if I lose them.

4FFA87E3-F378-4309-84BE-448401740DF2.jpeg I have found a flashlight an essential EDC item and weight is not an issue when you look around!
These 2 are tiny, but very bright!
Joe

When it comes to EDC items I usually only carry a knife and a pen. Although I could justify a flashlight for daily carry I don't because of the bulk/weight, I prefer to keep things light weight.

Keyboard Commando reporting for duty:

I carry a basic SAK Junior everywhere I go, the blade looks like a butter knife so people want to cuddle with it. Very average person friendly, and very useful. The downside of having a blade that looks like a duck bill is that you can't pierce those melted together plactic packages.

All in all, it really helps to have something to open packages and boxes with, especially at an office job.

I work at a desk. Generally I carry a Victorinox Rambler and a smallish traditional folder (lately a Buck 55). I don't generally carry a pocketknife for what I'm "going to" need it for, but for what I MIGHT need it for. I wasn't much of a Boy Scout back in the day, but that "be prepared" ethos made a lot of sense to me, then and now.

Hi! I’m working with quality assurance as an engineer. Not properly a keyboard commando but I use a laptop on a daily basis :). I work both in office (25%) and factories floors at suppliers (75%). I’m almost always in a need for a blade, from cutting pallets straps to slashing cardboard boxes during product audits, etc. On the production lines there are always e.g. work instructions boards/signs to be removed and changed, cabling or tape to be cut, labels to be removed, chemicals containers /raw materials packages to open, etc. I mainly rotate modern “tactical” folders, with a locking system of sorts. When in the office, I often prepare my own breakfasts and lunches. Same knife for the whole week, wash, rinse and dry before and after use :). Weekends is sometimes hiking or just walking in the woods and playing a bit with some woodwork, carving or whittling. When planning for some more demanding work outdoor, I pull out a compact fixed blade (mainly my F1) With my knives, I also indulge sometimes with some fun in the kitchen, with good peace for my dedicated kitchen knives :D (nothing very expensive or super professional, anyway). I normally also carry a multi-tool with me (the SOG/FOX Power Assist) which turns out very useful in many occasions. Often, when traveling and taking flights, for me it’s not worth the hassle and the waiting time to check-in a bag and I decide not to carry a knife/multitool but, boy, I really miss one. I am lucky my contact people at suppliers now, after several years, know about my “knife illness” :p:D and they always let me borrow a SAK or something more substantial from their tool boxes for the length of my stay in their regions :):thumbsup:.

Interesting post. I recall in Italy you need to "have a need" to carry a particular knife (legally speaking). I see there is need during your normal daily activities. The SAK from the suppliers is cute; got to keep the office guy doing audits happy!

How do you like that little Leatherman?
I've had my eye on one for awhile but was never sure where function met gimmick and who won the battle.

Started off carrying alot more, but have it now down to:
Victorinox Hiker, Tinker, or Fieldmaster. Occasionally swap one out for leatherman wave, skeletool, or another folder
Glasses cleaning cloth
Wallet
iPhone
Occasionally a sharpie for labeling network cables if im going to our data center
Occasionally an ASP palm defender (pepper spray) if im walking around the city
On the keyring:
Streamlight Nano on the keys
flat Stanley key that is a phillips and flathead
Approximately 6" Paracord lanyard

And thats it! Its been working out fine for me, never really feel like im lacking anything.

And in the car a AAA streamlight and a leatherman
