The Keyboard-Commando's EDC

I work outdoors, I carry a pen and a pocket knife and sometimes a small flashlight. I hate jingly pockets. If I need a bunch of other crap, I proudly rock a man purse.

I only got the Leatherman for the portable wire stripper. I suck at stripping wire with a blade. It only goes to 12 gauge.

The catch-22 with wire strippers; always needed, never the right size.

Tooth enamel seems to have a nice HRC rating somewhere between wire and housing... Not that I would ever recommend it, as delicious as copper tastes.

LOL.

You completely nailed my technique.
1. Score housing with knife
2. Bite and pull off delicious licorice housing

I sit at a desk as well.
I carry a 3-3.5 inch blade every day.
Working desk jobs is boring, so i flick open and close my knife all day. Haha.
It has a dual purpose..... it also says im the knife guy, leave me alone. Lol

When it comes to EDC items I usually only carry a knife and a pen. Although I could justify a flashlight for daily carry I don't because of the bulk/weight, I prefer to keep things light weight.

This Olight 3EE0S is tiny, one triple A battery, and very bright. It is just a little larger than a triple A battery. Here it is next to a Link.
Great little light!
When walking the dogs in the woods at night, I do it every night, I carry an Olight Seeker......that bad boy lights up the woods like daytime!!

You touch on a highly invaluable quality of the small tool aspect. The ability to do the job without freaking anyone out. I've lost count long ago of how many non knife people that I have 'converted' to our side by such mundane little tools like Victorinox classic's and Leatherman Squirts. Once you show a member of the un-initiated how handy a small sharp tool can be, they get it. And once they get used to having it, the beginnings of a habit is set. Some inconspicuous little tool like a Vic classic can cut open a UPS box or heavy duty mailer envelope just as well as the ninja commando tactical without freaking anyone out.

For most urban/suburban work environments, all you need is a small inch or two blade. More is just an exercise of want vs ned and ego.

I disagree with jackknife about blade length. I do agree that a one or two inch blade will do a lot. However, i find i have the need for about 3 inches of usable blade for many cutting tasks. The 3 inch will cut open most things easily and is long enough to cut apples in half. My delica will cut the apple in half, but the native5 i had would not quite make it through to the other side. The delica has a fraction of an inch more in usable blade length but it made the difference on many cuts. I do not find it to be about ego in any way.

Desk dweller, and its knife only. Usually one of four: Endura Superblue, BM Emissary 477-1, Protech Magic BR1, or ZT 0456. Pocket clip removed to spare my car seats and office chair. I also keep a Boker Urban Trapper (cocobolo, classy as shit) in my desk as an overpriced letter opener/fingernail cleaner.

I dont carry a multitool or flashlight. I have basic tools and flashlights in both my desk and car. There just isn't a need to carry the additional weight around in dress slacks.

normally one, but two allows for quick swap between clipped in the pants pocket or shirt pocket and clipped in the cap, 180 degree turn, for a free-hands use and headlamp function

Only 2 so far. One lets you clip it to your pocket, the other lets you face it the other way on the bill of a ball cap.
Oh, you poor, poor, fools. Get yourself a Streamlight ProTac 1AAA. Push-button switch, multi-mode programmable, and a two-way pocket clip.

I usually carry a 3.5" Kizer flipper or a Mcusta if I want to be classy, Olight EOS and then a small first aid kit in a old maglight case with a Leatherman squirt in there. I actually work as a barista and student, and just having those things are nice. Guess habit I learnt from scouts "be prepared, even though I don't always need to, pulling out a pocket knife just gets so many cutting tasks done quicker, and my friends and coworkers just gotten used to me being the weird gear guy sooo....

Size (choice) mostly depends on what you do with a knife, what you have become accustomed to, and of course personal preference. I also like generally a 3" blade, but not a 3.5" blade. However, I notice that my knife choices have slowly become a little smaller (closed length) as time marches on. Don't know why exactly. But, I still favor the 3" bladed folder and I'm keeping these smaller knives in reserve. A lot depends on how frequently you use a knife.
