The knife i wished i'd bought way back when, was a...

Lochsa....I only ordered ONE! At that time there was no wait time and I should have ordered at LEAST two.

Back in the late '80's I was working for Pachmayr Gun Works in downtown LA. The company got bought out and the new owners decided to expand, and go upscale. They bilt one of the nicest gun shops you could ever imagine in downtown Pasadena. Had $2-3 million dollars in guns, top end stuff. Carried the best gear they could get. everything first class. Did good business.

One of the salesguys had a friend he'd gone to school with who made custom knives, and talked the manager into parting with enough cash to stock a few. I'd never seen a $1000 knife before, and couldn't believe they'd sell. It took about a month to move 5-6 of them.

So this guy asks if I'd like to go meet the guy when he picks up a couple more knives. I spent 3-4 hours out in the shop, talking grinding and polishing, fit and finish, and just general BS; motorcycles, Europe, etc. As we were getting ready to leave he offered to sell me a little coyote skinner to use since I was spending a lot of time out in the Mojave. It was a nice little blade, but I just couldn't see paying what a new rifle would run.

That little Bob Loveless Caper Finn has haunted me for 20 years.

Like Reek I sold some I regret having sold. There are a few I didn't get thinking I would always have time later to grab one. That never came for a couple.

Large Schrade Lockback in carbon steel ( 1095)

Gerber Sportsman 2 in "V" steel ( Vascowear) from maybe 81 to 85? I did find one after 15 years of looking on the secondary market but it became so rare I so far have left it stock rather than making it mine.

Western Bowie ( #49 maybe?) in Carbon steel. I have one in stainless like new, but it's not the same as a carbon steel model. I see them around now and then but they are never very affordable.

SOG Tigershark Seki made in SK-5 . Yeah, I need a couple. They are getting rare and expensive. The Aus 6 ispowder coated, and has serrations and is not rare or desirable. Had one and let it get away. Poor choice.

710 M2. Had a couple, let them get away. Also let the Ritter grip in this steel get away, several Elishawitz Tanto's in M2. Out of all of them I just have the Nimravus in M2 left.

I do have 5 Benchmades in CPM M4 ( and 5 Spyderco's in this steel) so I don'yt feel as bad, but there was something about those 710's in M2........

Aside from a couple amazing deals I let go, I'd have to say a Buck 651 Intruder Pigsticker in the black version, have seen lots of the satin-finish ones for sale but no the black ones. However it was always just a whim, since I don't hunt.

Al Mar Pack Rat at $75.00. Plus, back when Blackjack went out of business, some seller at at gun show was selling them for $49.00 -- all models. At the the time (foolish me) I thought to myself, "why, that company is ripping off Randal designs" and wouldn't buy any.

Wait a minute...where did you see the black version 651!?! I thought I'd seen every NightHawk version out there but never a black version....anyone ??

Or those Arc-Angel seconds for $90-something. Apparently, they were seconds due to etch/stamp problems, and worked fine.

+1 on Arc Angel. I might even still have the flier CS sent out advertising this knife.

Also for me, 610 Rukus, 630 Skirmish, Busse AK 47.

Spyderco Renegade, Benchmade Spike (large), & an Al Mar Shadow. The Renegade is en route & the Spike is located & awaiting tax return cash. The Al Mar will likely be the one that got away.

I'm 34 this year & have lately found myself trying to locate all the knives I wanted in my mid-teens but couldn't afford. Is this part of the mid-life crisis I've heard so much about?

Yeah, tell me about it. This is a big one. The stupid price increases mean that I likely won't be able to own one unless something lucky happens.

Or used Spyderflies. I'd see 'em go for $50 back in the day.

I don't really mind missing out on all the other knives, but balisongs are far and few between.

Yeah can remember selling mine in 2009 (at a loss no less) to get something else that is gone now as well. This and my Dick Atkinson blue anodized titanium frame lock folder. I made money on it, but it was rare.

There are quite a few that I regret not buying. But,two that come to mind right now are the Buck Frontiersman and the HEST.

Benchmade Nimravus Cup in M2. I wish, they would have brought that back.

thats a great story...

Here's a few of my regrets

- Buck 184 Buckmaster ( Rambo type survival knife)
- Gerber Mark 1 or 2
- Gerber Paul ( original run)
- All the nice pocket knives I had as a kid that I carelessly lost.

You are absolutely right; there is no "black " version, it is just a bead blasted finish instead of the satin one, don't know production dates or if it was just a modification the user made (the owner was an Australian outdoorsman), but was in fact the only Pigsticker I ever handled (maybe it was just so beaten up that had lost the finish), and I loved how it looked.

By the way, there are new Nighthawks coming out, and those are actually black.

Back in the 1970s, I saw an ad for a survival knife ("A Tough Brute") in the back of a magazine . I was unable to buy it and it was the first time I saw one with a sawback, I think. I'm sure nowadays I would call it a junk knife, but I'm pretty sure had I gotten one at that time, it would be a prized possession.
