The knife making market: Self promotion vs no self promotion..

I have seen some makers do only self promotion on forums , no discussion. They throw up a post of a knife and never return to answer questions , thank folks for their input , etc.
Those are the types of self hype that put me off.

When I see a maker posting his work , and then interacting with forumites ( Is that a word ?), to me that is the best kind of self promotion , showing their product , getting to know their potential future customers and showing that they actually care about what people think.

Those type usually fade in the short term. ( let's call it "fakin' the funk" )

Some may think Snody's promotion is over the top, but he is doing it well, following up on it , constantly thinking outside the box , grabbing your attention and putting out quality promotion of quality product. Entertainment and a quality blade , how can you beat that ?

You can't be frontin' on a backstreet no more , you gotta step to mainstreet ;)

Much respect brother.

While others roll their eyes

You roll the $$$

Mike is one of the nicest, most prolific an innovating knifemakers that have surface in a very long time. Be they a "Pimp, cowboy, Ninja, Special Ops or BlackSmith" thats fine with me as long as they are a brother at heart.

$nody is the realist maker in the game. He is the rockstar of the knifemaking world, if his work and personality don't excite you ......:grumpy: then you suck.

This about sums out how I feel about it too. Market or be who you may, but a good person is a good person.

Wrong answer............ We must continually expand our "CIRCLE". At the same time, we must never give up the quest for perfection. Anyone who thinks they have "ARRIVED" in the knife making business is only fooling themselves.

I encourage each of you to take a look at your CIRCLE, and explore how it may be expanded.

Robert

Last time I had my circle expanded was when I went to jail ........

.....Whoops, todays Friday, right?

.....Oh gosh, wrong forum, PRANK CALL! PRANK CALL!

Any craftsman, no matter what he does or makes, if the objective is to make money, then a good marketing policy is essential. A Knifemaker can make the finest highest quality knife in the world, but if he doesn't have a way to present the knife to me, A Consumer, then one day, he is going to wind up with a shop full of used equipment, a pile of quality knives, and no money.

Brilliant Post..
Let me follow up where you left off at the no money part..
Then his wife divorces him and takes his dog with her to life in a condo where you pay alimony because she helped you build your failed knife business.. You start drinking excessively and then blame all your problems on rap music and white people with gold teeth...

I support a family four.. My wife and kids deserve the best I can give them.. This is USA and it was built on CAPITALISM....
Keep it real.. Hundreds of clients are reading this thread..... Keep it real for them... Its their MONEY and they dont have to buy your product.. You have to work for their money and that goes way beyond just building a knife... Google "Snody" we put in that work for our clients.. They deserve to purchase cutlery that is guaranteed to appreciate in value .. They deserve to Make Money when they sell their custom knives in the aftermarket.. When you buy a Snody Knife you have money in your hands.. A rolex will get you out of jail in a third world country and a Snody will put a bunch of money in your pocket on ebay... Walk in a pawn shop and hand them a "Snody" and they be like "Oh Yeah,, we know that guy, the white dude with the gold teeth on youtube with over a million views, then they pay you..Thats why we work so hard behind the scenes... I am just keeping it real for my clients.. Respect from Texas...

Im gonna make a do not touch sign for my table at shows.

Once I feel my knives are consistantly worthy of promotion and I can produce a consistant # of knives, I will promote them. While the Snody method of advertising isn't my cup of tea, it still got my attention, which is the point. Also I have never heard Mr. Snody say "MY KNIVES ARE THE GREATEST, ALL OTHER KNIVES SUCK!!", "IM THE BEST KNIFEMAKER OF ALL TIME!!", its just "Hey I got some cool knives, come over and take a look,".

Im gonna make a do not touch sign for my table at shows.

Reverse psychology always works, people can't resist it.;)

Frankly, I think it's great that there are folks out there like Snody showing folks how various marketing techniques work at reaching specific customers. It bears mentioning that not all knifemkers want to reach the same audience, so what works for one might not work for all. If your product is targeted at old folks in rocking chairs that spend their time whittling wooden toys for Santa to give out at Christmas, my guess is most of those old folks wouldn't respond to Snody's methods... but then again, you might be surprised. My 75 year old uncle spends a LOT of time on YouTube... mostly looking at video clips of kids singing gospel classics and the like... bey hey, it's STILL YouTube.

Respect to you, Snody, for making a name for yourself and a good living doing what you love. That's what this country is all about. The fact that I don't get excited about your product and methods really only speaks to the fact that I am not in your target demographic, and that's cool. My wife and I have long known we aren't in the target demographic for MOST advertisers. :)
