The Knife that made you start collecting

For me it was the BM 941REDBC1. It got me going about a year ago and now it is an addiction.

I count over 35 BM's and 10 Non BM's in the span of one year.

A small red celluloid handled pen knife my Dad gave me when I was 5 or 6 years old. That knife was soon lost and the quest began....

In the 1950s I saw a movie called The Iron Mistess with Alan Ladd playing Jim Bowie. That big bowie he had started my love for that style of knife.

The knife that started my interested in knives, at least in the broader sense of pocket tools, was a SAK that I received when I was around ten. I'm not sure which brand, but I think it was a "Mechanic" with a graphic of a 1930's-style car on it. I'm pretty sure it was not the same as the modern Victorinox Mechanic, although it may have been a previous version.

The knife that triggered my specific interest in knives, as opposed to pocket tools, was a Kershaw Ricochet. I had owned and carried single-blade knives before, but this was my first good one, and I could really tell the difference.

That discovery got me looking at knives and reading the forums to learn more. Next thing I knew I was buying a Kershaw Boa and thinking that maybe I needed a few more knives "for special occasions". I've been afflicted with the collecting bug ever since.

The knives that started my interest in collecting are no longer with me; they were abandon in disgust on a back trail decades ago.

As a teenager, my friends and I decide to tackle a nice weekend backpacking trip. We pulled most of the gear together, and ran off to buy a few last minute items at the local army navy store. One of the thing I purchased was a pair of American Camper machetes. I knew we were following an old logging trail, and that the undergrowth might be a problem in early summer.

I was right about the undergrowth, but the machetes proved near worthless. Within minutes, both examples were bent into nearly unrecognizable forms. I had been collecting and using knives for a number of years, but, I came back from that trip determined to find a few "good" machetes. I have since found a few, and I am still looking for a few more. One of these days I may go back to that trailhead in search of two relics. It would be fun to mount one of those oddly twisted relics on my wall.

The Knife that started it all for me? I remember the day.

I was in kindergarten, I was home sick from school. I was waching the movie "Rescuers Down Under". The Australian kid wakes up and grabs his SAK off a table and runs into the woods. It appealed to me. I went to my Dad's bedroom and got his small black Victorinox Classic. I even brought it to school on a few occasions not knowing it was illegal (but I never took it out, nobody ever found out). Then I started playing with his Wenger keychain knife as well. Soon after I got a promo knife he had, a 1 dollar SAK ripoff, and finally, a Victorinox Explorer for my 11th birthday.

The first knife that started me off was a wierd small folder that was given to my Dad from a salesman when I was a boy. Ever since I been a knife freek. However, in the early 90's I found that I wasn't the only freek who liked knives, alot!!! I ordered a Benchmade and a Coldsteel, found their forums and been a happy knife nut ever since.

I have carried a pocket knife since I was 8 years old but the knife that got me collecting was a Schrade Pocket Beast I got a couple years ago. 35 (much better) knives later here I am.

In 1971, as a freshman at Penn State, I had some book momey left over and I purchased a Puma folding hunter. That's the way it started...wish I could remember what happened to that knife????

I've been carrying a knife since I was nice or ten. For many years I was carrying a Sharp brand knife. It was heavy and felt great in my hand. Really had some heft... about a 3 1/2 (stainless) blade.

Then I bought an Endura a couple years ago. I wanted more. I saw a Benchmade 730 online and it was all over...

My first knife was a Boy Scout knife, long gone. I started collecting knives about 6 years ago when I bought my Spyderco Endura.

Alan Elishewitz fixed blade in D2 for around $230 or so, which led to
Allen 'Blade' Light Ranger fixed blade in 1095, ...to Delica...to...etc.

That's easy, and I'll bet that it's the same knife that got a lot of other people collecting, as well.

Mine was the Benchmade 970SBT. Basically, an Emerson CQC7 tanto folder witha black, serrated blade.

I've owned a few, how many I don't know, and five real Emerson CQC7-Bs. I put in an order for a handmade one in December of 1996. I still have the receipt, but it's unlikely that I will ever see the knife.

More importantly, Ernie showed me how great folders are, and how much they have improved. It sparked a hobby in me that I will enjoy for decades.

I've never met Ernie, if I run into him at a show sometime, I'm going to thank him for all of the joy that he has brought me--and you, too, probably.

K-bar. Saw one on the t.v. series "Tour of Duty" when I was a kid. Wanted one ever since.

I had one or two Imperial knives growing up along with one or two scout knives. Both of my grandfathers carried small pocket knives and my dad always had one close by. Around 1973 my parents returned from a European vacation and brought me a SAK handyman (I was knifeless for a few years prior).

About 1996 I got my first multi-tool (Schrade) for work and it was all down hill from there. It didn't take long to find out that I was using the knife on the tool more than the other implements. So,I guess the Schrade multi-tool is what pushed me over the edge:cool:

I have always been interested in knives...ever since I can remember.

I bought a Spyderco Endura about 4 years ago and it sparked my interest in high quality folders. It did everything I wanted while remaining razor sharp.

I have now spent more money on knives that I care to think about.

i was looking for a neck knife and i saw an emerson la griffe so thats my first real knife since then its been very addicting

I first got into knife collecting when I inherited my Father's knife collection (40 or so) following his death when I was twelve. At 16 I bought "my" first knife which was a Buck 110.

Meeting Jack Crain when I was 14 got me started on the path to collecting and dabbling in knife making. The movies "Predator" "Commando" and "First Blood" were a big influence as well. Now it's meeting all the folks here on the blade forums and talking to the talented new knifemakers and here that keeps my enthusiasm and interest alive.
