I just got back from the P.O. I sent a knife priority mail. I used one of thoses small priority boxes that the P.O. provides. The woman says,"If you use our boxes it will cost you an extra .45cents. I said,"you have got to be kidding me!". She says that yesterday the officials called them and told them to charge extra if someone used one of their boxes. They charge you the 2 pound price to ship for a one pound package if it is in their box. This is just one more reason for us to boycott the U.S.Postal Service. I am going to look into Fed Ex ground rates and compare. Even if Fed Ex is higher, I think I will still like them better. They have a much better tracking system anyway.

The new rates are ridiculous, but to start talking about a boycott is also ridiculous....almost as ridiculous as the great half-baked S&W boycott.
Are you going to send all your letter, etc. via FedEx from now on? What about mail that you recieve?
Or were you just talking about a half-assed package boycott?

These boycott's are just a sore spot with me, especially when they are done for the wrong reason, or are half-assed, or are clearly unrealistic, or are just plain stupid.

At any rate, I'm not trying to jump on you specifically NCBlades, and I do agree that something should be done, but a boycott is just not realistic, and could not be done any other way than halfway..

I am sorry that I pi$$ed you off mikemc. Do you work for the Postal Service? I didn't mean to boycott them all together, but just on priority or express packages.

Maybe the woman was wrong, but the Postmaster was standing right there when she told me about this. Yesterday I shipped something and they only charged me $3.50 but today $3.95 for the same size and weight package. Hopefully she was wrong.

Mikemc - I have one word for you - De-caffeinated. If you want to start a tirade on the evils of inept boycotting then please feel free to start your own thread, perhaps in the W&C forum. NC was merely venting his frustration concerning the recent USPS price hikes, I'm sure he was not trying to recruit followers for a bungled rebellion.

By the way, NC, I wasn't aware that the PO would charge you extra for using one of their Priority Mail boxes. Thanks for the heads-up. Sad cause I have probably 20 of those boxes laying around. I'm with you in researching other avenues for mailing.

Michael, I suspect that your PO staff was perhaps confused since the flat rate priority mail cardboard envelope now costs $3.95 to mail. I just received a priority box package mailed Monday, after the new rates were in effect, and the postage was only $3.50.

Wow, I don't where your postal folks get their info, but there's no mention of an "box" issues. I sent out over a dozen Priority packages yesterday with no added box costs. Here's a scan of the only changes that were approved. Maybe your clerk was increasing their pension fund after a tough year?

Why not try folding their boxes inside out. Then the Priority logo will be on the inside as opposed to the outside and they won't be able to tell it was their box. Or is that mail fraud

Along with the rate hike. I mailed a Priority package off in november, took till late December to go from Colorado to North Carolina... I was told TS by USPO, the 3-4 day is just an estimate...

Thanks for the replies guys. I am going to check back with the P.O. and see if they did make a mistake.

Thanks for backing me up Hillbillenigma.

Hey guys.......I think if you use a box they automatically charge you the 2 pound rate....
Sounds like the lady was a little confused...It doesn't matter WHO'S box it is, any box will be more than the 1 pund rate.

Mikemck...settle down there big fella

My opinion is:

They are making people who are shipping packages pay much more so they could look good in most people's eyes by ONLY raising stamps by 1 cent.

The increase certainly doesn't help them hire any people to help track lost or stolen packages, or even answer a #&@ telephone..

No need at all for you to apologize NCBlades. It's me that should apologize, and I do of course..apologize.

I can only say that the S&W boycott has me very upset and disappointed with gun owners.
I won't let myself get started on that whole mess, at least not more than I already have in my previous reply.

Again though, please accept my sincere apology for letting my frustrations get the better of me.

Tim, I think you' re starting to cramp Tom Mayos style!

Mikemck, I know exactly how you feel. You' re definitely not alone out there.

As for turning the priority boxes inside out and using them to deliver in their system, the US Postal service states to the effect that misuse or inappropriate use of their shipping materials is subject to possible criminal prosecution! Or something to that effect. Go to their web site and do a search.

As for the individual who stated that an additional .50 will be incurred to use one of their boxes, BWA HA! HA! HA! HA! I overheard a nearby customer being told the same in my local PO branch. And the Supervisor (not postmaster) likewise agreed!! The adjacent clerk then told them both it wasn' t so! So the Supervisor then agreed! INCREDULOUS. Too much.

Thanks for posting the new postal rate chart. I see that the price of regular priority mail package with delivery confirmation is now $3.85. That's a 2 or 3 day delivery product for the 48 states. From our location the average cost of a UPS ground package is $4.20 (plus $.20 for a box that is free from the USPS) and that is a 1 to 5 day delivery program with the average between 2 and 3 days just like priority mail. That gives me trackability, insurance I can actually make a claim on, daily pickups at our location and an automated shipping system. UPS is looking better every day. We'll likely stop using USPS completely except for customers with PO or APO/FPO addresses. Take care.

Speaking of "Priority Mail", I sent out a package last Tuesday to Nakano, and it still hasn't arrived!
And, another package that was sent to me, again last tuesday, didn't arrive until this Tuesday...
This is really chapping me something fierce..But I surely do appreciate Nakano's patience

i just shipped out a 400.00 knife today at my local post office and used one of the medium priority boxes.....my shipment weighed something like 13 ounces and i was charged 3.50 for this....next i had it insured for the full amount and this was 5.00 (2.00 for the first hundred and 1.00 for each additional hundred)...delivery confrimation was .40...total was 8.90...ups is looking very attractive to me.....michael, the clerk in your case was trying to charge you flat rates for a box that needed to be weighed...i looked very carefully at all of the boxes and none had flat rate printed on them...the only thing with flat rates at the post office were the envelopes marked clearly in large letters FLAT RATE...sounds like your clerk needs to go back to postal clerk school...feverdoc

Here are the rates to ship feverdoc's $400 knife in a video box weighing one pound with $400 worth of insurance.

USPS 2-3 Day Priority Mail with delivery confirmation - $8.90

FedEx Express Saver 3-day delivery - $11.65

UPS 3-Day Select - $9.05

UPS looks pretty good. Especially since they guarantee 3 days instead of say that maybe it will, maybe it won't get there in 3 days like USPS does.

UPS scans your package every time it is picked up and moved. You can actually tell who signed for it. You can call and talk to a live person if you have a problem. It will not take 6 months to receive your insurance claim.

Looks like .15 cents well spent to me.
