While I am not sure the reason for doing so, maybe the person is also now 'watching' the thread for changes, or just likes the knife in general? I have done similar things but only because others have liked my sale threads. ;)

So, when I get a notification that someone liked the thread, at first I think it may be an response to the sale thread and they plan on buying the item, but find it's just a 'like' thing and they have moved on to another section of the forum or a different sales thread altogether.

I do get it that people 'like' things like knives, but I would think it would be more in the general area of the forums and not on sales threads. Areas where you are showing off something you just got, or some mod you made to something that you wanted to share.

Or maybe it's just me, lol, my wife does say I am special, I took that as a compliment ;)

I’ve been guilty of this. Sometimes if I see something really nice or notice a fair price on something, I’ll hit like. I figured this was better then cluttering up the sales thread with a comment like “nice price”. I don’t do it often though haha.

I have been guilty of this, including some of your threads I believe. I will rethink it going forward.

The other issue is people doing the laughing emoji on a sales thread. I assume this is a criticism of the price. I do think this is wrong. (Full disclosure: I did this a couple of times. I reversed the last one I did after thinking this was the same thing as criticizing the price in a comment.)

[Edit: From the rules link in another GB&U thread, "using emojis to mock, be ironic, sarcastic or negatively comment upon a seller's listing in the exchange can and will earn you warning points in the same fashion as posting off-topic comments." Hmmm... I guess I self-reported myself.)]

Thanks guys, and yes I read somewhere that moderators were watching for people doing the laughing emoji, while some I think probably deserved such a thing (maybe bring the person selling it down to earth) but as they say things will sell for what the market will bear, you never know what things will sell for.

I know that several folks that have liked my sale threads I count as friends and figure they were doing that for morale support ;) it is good to have friends for sure!

Sometimes if I see a knife I already own and like at a fair price, it is tempting to post something like "Great deal on this, fantastic bit of kit"
And while it is complimentary to the sale, just clutters up the thread and might actually hurt the sale and annoy the seller. So a like seems like an innocuous option. I've certainly been guilty of that.

I'm sure it doesn't hurt anyone to have those likes, it just raises hopes that Ah a sale lol but, nope, just a friendly liking of the thread and that may make others that view it think that if that many people LIKED it, must be something about it that I could find to like or even buy as well.

It's just something I had been thinking about for a while now is all :)

You can turn off the notification for likes while still getting the bell notification for responses. I had to do that as pictures seem to get a lot of likes and there were a couple times I looked over new responses.

It is also against site rules:
Do not post in a person's thread unless you have an implicit interest in buying the item. Posts like, "Nice knife!", "Why is the price so high/low?", "I wish I had funds" are not allowed. This means absolutely no commentary or feedback in someone's sales thread.

The likes can mean several things - just acknowledging a friend, appreciating the price, liking the knife, saying "I saw it first", etc

I am guilty of liking or commenting acknowledging a really nice knife, and was not aware of it being against the rules. Since makers frequently compliment other makers blades in the sale threads, I assumed it was okay. I will refrain from doing so in the future.
Makers can accept BF members commenting in their sale threads. From what I've seen, most acknowledge them as members commenting in maker sale threads are wholly positive.

In member sale threads though, 'chat' or 'conversational' commenting is not allowed. Not trying to put words in Gary's mouth here, but it appears that he's speaking about his individual 'member' type sale post.

Should be explicit instead of implicit IMO.

I disagree.

Explicit posts would only allow for "I'll take its".

Implicit posts allow other posts like questions on the item, clarifications, offers, requests to contact, notices of messages sent ect.

As the seller, you are currently allowed to state that you only want "I'll take it" posts in your thread.

Yeah I have liked sale posts to indicate I thought the knife or price was special, in the hopes of maybe spurring someone else towards making the purchase

I both do it and recieve them.just a way to show feelings on a knife, staying within the rules and not an intent to buy. I presume it is not a sales inquiry unless I get a PM, though I do check them as a matter of interest and possibility it could be a post in the profile page by a member without PM privaleges.
I appreciate them, but would appreciate them even more if they were followed with a buy :)
