Just for some side by side comparisons. Some are very close but no two are the same.

Sorry, I have another question regarding Loveless liners. :o

Most Loveless knives I have seen only have liners between the tang and scales, however a few also have then between the hilt/guard and handle scales.

What determines this treatment? Is it by model? By whim? By the particular scales being used?

Thanks for the additional info, Mike. My sheephorn one is right at 6 1/2",
about 11 1/2" OAL. This does have red liners that really stand out with the dark gray of the handle.

I got that one Kevin. Usually when Bob made a "personal" knife he would add the red liners between the scales and guard to further distinguish the piece.
Hope that helps
Dave

The first knife in your post, and Kevin's knife above are the same.;)

Yes, they are. Dave's photo doesn't quite do that beautiful stag justice. ;)

Thanks Dave.
Lots of good information shared in this thread.

I'm not normally a sheephorn fan, but Win, that knife is outstanding. Thanks all for posting these photos, and thanks to Mike for the useful info.

Bob always said that a Knife was like a beautiful Woman. Looks a little better with a little bit of red lipstick.

He would say that red was all he would use. But he did use black liners from time to time. There was also a color called brick, which is a darker red he used from time to time. I sent him around 40-50 sheets of the rarer thin liner material, as it had become hard to get.

There are at least two more popular colors available from the suppliers, but Bob didn't really like them. Blue and white. Really garish.

Bob made a very few really rare ones, with very thin brass sheet in place of the red liner. It looks like very fine gold stripes running down the tang.

Even though publicly Bob stated that he always used the liners. Both for beauty and strength. He did in fact however, make quite a few with no liner at all. Especially with exotic woods where the color would fight the beauty of the wood.

To add to the confusion, he would sometimes when the mood struck him, add a liner directly behind the guard. A lot of Makers do this. But Bob didn't do it very often.

Another interesting little known tid-bit. A maker thing. Not something generally known by the collectors.

The Loveless Double Edged Knives are a bitch to grind. On the finishing stroke of the grind, it likely to damage the tip. Or take a little too much off. This gets more and more of a challenge as the belt grit gets smaller. It's like trying to jog on wet black ice with the really fine belts.

For this reason, we cut the blade 1/8 to 3/16" longer to allow for this. But sometimes they still get away from us. So the blade may end up a full 3/16" of la little more, longer than spec. If it gets away from us, it can end up as much as 3/16" to 1/4" shorter than spec. Just one more reason for the differences from Knife to Knife.

No doubt, this adds to the confusion between the different modes of the Double Edged Fighters.

This thread has really cleared up some uncertainties and offered welcomed insight on Loveless knives.
Thanks Mike, Dave for the information and Buddy for starting us down this road.

I am really happy to see Mike Lovett's input on this thread.

Mike, you are a tremendous resource to this forum regarding your knowledge of Loveless knives. When you stick to the "facts" you are a true treasure trove.

Thanks for re-surfacing,

Anthony Lombardo

The very reason I spend as little time here as possible. No matter what I post, there is always an insult. Even if ever so slight, while disguised as a compliment.

Nine times out of ten, it is for trying to help a new maker, or help some one understand something that is either miss-understood, or confusing.

Once again, I made the mistake of posting.
I will never, as long as I live, understand the arrogance here.

Totally UN-called for.

Man I was giving you a compliment. You are so full of attitude you can no longer recognize one. Chill out and go make knives.

Mike even though Anthony basically implied you were a liar in the same post, in his morose and cynical view of the world it was a complement.
Your input is appreciated here.

Anthony is not morose and cynical, Kevin..he is honest and direct....he just doesn't like you, and you almost never miss an opportunity to poke him when you get the chance, regardless of the subject.;)

I don't think that he was accusing Mike of being a LIAR.....I think that he was implying that it would be better for us all if Mike stuck to the facts, rather than conjecture and baseless accusations when engaging in contentious dialogue on an internet forum.

The same could be said for us all, myself most definitely included.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

And if you search/check my posts you will find that other than my responding to his attack against me a little while back, I have not replied to his posts in a LONG time.
The only reason I posted here is that he made similar posts (practically, back to back) in regard to both Mike and John Fitch in another thread.

Though opinionated, as many of us here are, Mike has certainly contributed to the benefit of the BF community over the years.

:edited after Steven and I discussed this off-line.

Ok, I get it.........but you and Anthony have had contention in the past, and that is likely to color the future.

Am I missing something besides that?

^ Obviously, we didn't have as productive a telephone discussion as I thought.
However, I will not be part of another good thread gone wrong. Adiós!

I too thought it was a productive discussion, we just disagree....that is ok....we do it a lot, and can still work together to accomplish great things!

Vaya con Dios, amigo.
