The Magnificent Seven

Alan, I was literally in pain as I passed up photo after photo in my Imgur account, trying to narrow it down. I couldn't take it anymore.
Sometimes I wonder if I like the knives themselves, the photography, or the give and take on the forum more. The Red Stag is outstanding.

Well, if the criteria is bare minimum, I could do quite well with just these. I just took a practical approach. Both are just plain sturdy knives. My thought was, how minimal could I go, which ones could do the most for me and be most durable. I added a good way to maintain the edge in a "third" slot. If I went with 7 to be honest, that's bout half my current traditional knives, lol.

In the spirit of this thread by kamagong kamagong here are seven knives I wouldn't want to be without but there's no way I could just live with these seven.

Left to right:

Case 6347 Stockman; Case SS Lockback; Case Barlow; Schrade Fire&Ice Trapper; GEC #71; Case 6292 Jack; SOG Stingray

That black one in the middle, has a great "if this knife could talk" look to it:thumbsup:

That one is Granddad’s knife. I can remember him having it in the 70’s when he’d come from Montana to visit and take us fishing on the Mississippi. If he makes it that long he’ll be 101 next week!!! Won’t be there for his birthday this year but his 100th was a hoot:D

315 315 , 101! That's awesome! Such a lifetime, the things people of that generation have seen. I remember my great grandmother telling me when she was young, seeing an airplane was rare and you talked about it for weeks, to watching a man walk on the moon. Great that you have such a good memento of his.

Classic line up. We have long admired that case Barlow!

Let's do a thought exercise. If you had to cull the herd, which ones would you keep?

These are mine. A couple of sentimental favorites, the rest I just really like a lot. They are all perfect-pocketknife-sized at ~ 3 3/4" closed. There is enough variety in the covers and blade shapes to keep me content (I hope).

What is the pearl handled 2 blade? Great group!

I find that it is impossible to cut down to 7 knives because of the rule that I made a few years back . Whoever gives me a knife gets it back one of these days which is hopefully still , at 77, a number of years away . I am going to go through my pictures and just give you a hint of how many that would be .

All but 3 of these :

I am sure you get the idea by now and I can assure you that That Ain't All .

1. Western 854 utility
2. K55K
3. Queen Country Cousin
4. 34OT
5. TL29
6. Buck 180 cross lock
7. hand made navaja with horn handles.
I'll make it even easier (harder?) I'll take the Western 854. everything else just hangs around in a draw waiting for its turn in the pocket that never comes;)

I don't know exactly what I would get rid of.

I know I would keep at least three Buck 110, my 112, a stockman or three, and a 4 blade Scout knife (or a SAK Huntsman).
I'd probably keep my Opinel #8, too.

I'd have a difficult time saying "good bye" to my Barlows, Canoes, Sunfish, and Marlin Spikes.

I might be able to give up my Trappers, (except my Buck 374 Trapper. I really like that one :)) and everything under 3 ~ 3 1/4 inches closed, since I don't carry them much (if at all) anyway.

Fixed blades? I'd keep my Old Hickory Paring Knife, Mora 612, Buck 877, Buck 119, and Western L66 ... and presuming I didn't leave it in Ohio, my (non-bowie) CS Bushmaster.
I think I could "live" without the other fixed blades I have, however, I am not 100% sure about that.

Thinking about it, (yeah, yeah, I know. "Thinking" can be hazardous at my age.) I don't think I could thin the herd down very much.
There are still a few that I want to add to it.
A Buck 103, for example, and the 2018 Forum Knife ... a few Buck 110's with 5160 blade steel and Oak covers, SK Blades upcoming drop point 110LT ... an Ontario 499 and 498 ... maybe a Nessmuk ... :(

I love this thread! Winnowing down my collection is always my Don Quixotic goal, I make progress and then buy back up. Recently I sold half of my TC Barlow’s then ended up buying some customs. I like your number of 7 “if I HAD to” Knives. Will post pictures soon. Keep posting everyone!
