The makes my rotation euphemism, for EDC

I hear a lot about this and that knife is good enough for my edc rotation.

So I kind of assume everyone has knives for each day of the week…ha, but I think this rotation idea may be
euphemism to “ I want another knife I do no really need“ ha.

My youner brother loves Microtechs. The real expensive models…
And I have to chuckle when he tells me “ Bought this new Microtech for woods carry….it will be my woods carry knife.

I think he has 6 or 7 Microtech woods carry knives now,
maybe one for each day of the week. It makes him happy, that what counts..

So I assembled my own EDC rotation…not to be left out of this rotation craze, so here it is.

Rough Ryder Scout Knife …Mondays
Doug Ritter Houg Micro …Tuesdays
Civivi Elemetum Button lock …Wed
Buck 112 …..Thursdays
Buck Sprint Pro..Fridays

open choice on Sat and Sun

Not trying to be funny so I apologize if it sounds snarky.

Is EDC that you carry something every day?
OR
Is EDC that you carry something every day?

I always thought it meant the latter, but the way it’s used commonly, and when used like in the OPs post, I guess I thought wrong.
It seems that “EDC knives” are just knives that can be carried every day.
I took it to mean knives that ARE carried every day.
It sure opens a lot of possibilities now that I have many more EDC knives!

I have about 7/8 knives in a pile on my dresser (I will swap in other knives at random)

I reach down and grab one every morning at random, and yes they actually get used at my work

I sold off what I didn't use and kept everything I actually do

IMO, rotation allows you to experience more gear and tools, but you won't spend enough time with a particular tool to be highly proficient with it. But I get the collecting and experiencing aspect of gear realated hobby.

For me, I'd like to use one tool for many years to get proficient with it. The same knife, the same multitool, the same flashlight, the same wallet,... "I do not fear the man who practice 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who practice one kick 10,000 times" -Bruce Lee-

An "EDC knife" is a knife you carry when it's just a regular day. The knife is not a safe queen, the day isn't a special occasion, and the day's planned activities are not driving the knife choice. (Example: "I'm not going hunting today, so I don't need to carry a knife designed specifically for skinning game.")

And to answer the OP, I got a lot of knives. Most of them get carried at least once in a while. I have a few that get carried more frequently than others. But even the short list membership changes from time to time.

That makes sense.
Thanks 🙏

I carry a Spyderco knife every time I leave the house; walking, cycling, or driving to get groceries.

I have eight different knives, and pick them mostly randomly.

I say "mostly" because the Dragonfly always goes cycling (small and light), but also sees other duties.

So for me "EDC" means "Every Day I leave the house, I Carry a knife, and some days, more than once."

I use a lot of different rotations and knives picked for purpose, but not on a scheduled rotation. I rotate a bunch of folders out of my collection into a few drawers for use and one of those goes into the hard use EDC rotation. There's also light use EDC rotation, gentleman carry rotation, yardening fixed knife, and backpacking rotations (with considerations for short or long trip). There are also fixed and folder knives for various rooms/sheds, etc, so something's always handy. That and a bunch of very specific activity knives: filleting, skinners, wood carving, throwers etc. Throw in a few big, stupid knives that I just like, but aren't very practical, and a couple commemorative collector knives. Some definitely get used a lot more than others, some carried for days, some just for an afternoon, and some of the more expensive and/or "murdery" looking ones I don't tend to carry if I have plans to go to a security controlled facility or government institution.

Given how many knives I have and how often I have use for one, I'd feel pretty ridiculous if I was in a situation where I needed a knife but didn't have one and end up asking myself: "Now if only there was a sharp, pointy tool for a moment like this".

There is a member on this forum who has whittled down her collection to one - a Bugout if I'm not mistaken. It took her awhile and she seems to be quite satisfied with just the one EDC knife.

I have a smallish collection, but far more than I "need" as an EDC, but any could fill the role of an "only" knife. The last knife I bought (Buck 110) was in August 2020 and have no real desire to purchase another knife (unless I win the lottery - but since I don't buy lottery tickets, I guess I'm done).

I carried the same 110 everyday for 10 years. This was an EDC knife.

Since I joined the workforce I have 3 types of pants I change into daily. (Work, jeans, shorts)I got tired of constantly switching my belt from one to the other. So when I could afford it I bought 2 more belts, then 2 more 110 sheaths. Eventually 2 more 110’s.

So then I had 3 110’s I carried daily. I still EDC’d a 110. Just not the same one everyday all day. This was an EDC rotation.

Now I mix it up and throw more fixed blades into the non work EDC rotation I still carry a knife every day.

So I still EDC a knife but no longer have an EDC knife.

But I still carry the same 110 to work everyday the same one for 30 years. So that is a work EDC knife.

You can see how it can be used in different contexts.

I look at my "EDC" the same way that I look at my wife's shoes. She has a billion pair, but she generally will leave the house wearing one of 10 pair depending on what her outfit and workload look like for the day.

Now, my rotation rarely revolves around wardrobe, but I do look at what I am going to be doing at work and where I plan on going. I don't have a Knife of the Day, but I will rotate between a large microtech, Inkosi, and sometimes a ZT303 if I am getting down into the dirtier parts of my job.

I will say that my true EDC of the last 2 or 3 years straight has been a Leatherman P4 Free. Before that it was a Rebar, Surge, etc. Always, ALWAYS, a Leatherman.

Now my old man, he's carried some variation of a Buck 110 for the last 45+ years and nothing else. He bought one back when it was "the" knife choice of bikers as he was an avid rider. However, he truly uses it every day with out fail or babying it. Cutting plastic, scoring things, even digging the dried grease out from around the pivots of his skidsteer so that he can squirt in fresh. The things he does to that knife would make most of us cringe, but that $30 work horse just keeps plugging along until 9 buy him a new one ever 10 or 15 years for birthday/fathers day.

Perfect illustration!

Yes, there is a difference in the term itself when used by different speakers in different contexts. A knife manufacturer will describe a knife that's pocket friendly, useful, and decorated in a way that isn't too dainty/fragile or too menacing and gruesome, because for the seller, an 'EDC knife' is a knife that would be suitable for regular carry by a regular person doing regular things with their life. It's not a JabMaster 3000, it's not a William Henry, for most of us living on budgets below six figures it probably wouldn't even be a plain jane Shiro, because for one reason (social suitability) or another (price, difficulty to replace, embellishments that would be ruined by the work environment) they are not suited for use as a daily driver.

When a person uses it, they might be referring to a section of their collection, or they might be referring to a singular make or model they prefer, or they could be talking about a single knife. You have to engage with the material a bit to paraphrase what any one person means by 'EDC' in any given statement.

So my "Blood 'n Guts GRUESOME XXL": shouldn't make the EDC list? 🙃
(Still carrying the Mnandi...)

I was raised to believe that any guy that didn't carry at least a slip joint pocketknife was an idiot, and to keep away from them. I carry many knives at the same time so to me 'EDC' means my primary knife that I would use in self-defense or an emergency. The other knives are for cutting stuff to keep the edges on my primary "EDC" knife nice and sharp.

Carrying the same knife every day seems impractical to me.
I have an Out And About On Rainy But Not Cold Days knife, a Spyderco Pacific Salt 2 with H1 steel.
And also an Out And About On Most Dry But Not Cold Days knife, a Spyderco Endura 4. Both of these Spydercos fit my horizontal belt sheaths exceptionally well.
But on days that are cold enough for a jacket, I usually wear any of several neck knives, so they will not be covered by the jacket. But I do not have a neck knife for cold, rainy days. The Spyderco ARK would be good for that if it were sharp enough to cut anything. The MKM Mikro (M390) would be great except that the sheath is leather. Clearly, I need a new neck knife for cold, rainy days.
For farm chores, there's a whole different set of knives.
