The makes my rotation euphemism, for EDC

I have about 40 knives. I actually use and carry about 5. Sometimes I will carry the same knife for a month or more, sometimes I will carry a different one every day to work. Sometimes I pick a specific knife for a specific task.

So my "rotation" is not in a particular order or time frame. So if it's in my rotation it might mean I like it, it's probably going to be in my pocket on a semi-regular basis or very regular basis. 😂

When I was a boy, my grandfather gave me a SAK. It was my first knife. He sat me down and showed me how to use it. He didn't just explain what was right and what was wrong as a use. He told me that any man should be able to tell the time, cut things, and make fire.

I still carry a lighter. I still wear a watch. Technology has advanced since my grandfather's time but instead of deleting items in favor of a smart phone, I've actually added a flashlight. My grandfather also carried a handkerchief but I think that was assumed. He kept firearms at home and in the desk at work but didn't often carry them around town. Of course, his closest approximation of a "carry gun" was an all-steel, six-shot, 3" revolver in .38 special. That's a bit different from today's more comfortable EDC choices.

To answer the original question, each of these represent a slot in my EDC. Each slot has its own short list of items ready for filling it, depending on various factors. I refer to that list as my "rotation" and the items on it as elevated beyond "stuff in a box".

When I was still working I always had a pen, lighter, watch, etc. Every day, just as sure as I was wearing Red Wing boots.
Since 'retiring' 2 years ago, I can't thing of a single thing I've needed a pen for, and it fell from my EDC routine. It wasn't as simple as deleting it for tech.
I still do have pens and lighters in the truck (and various other places), just no longer in my pockets.
And I still wear my boots.
I wonder how many kids these days are being told to carry knives and lighters?

I have three knives. A ZT 0350 that I carry everyday, a Kershaw Acclaim as my spare ( if l lose the ZT and waiting to buy a new one ) and an ultra thin Schrade 303M for those occasions my ZT would be too heavy or obtrusive ( wearing a suit or lightweight pants that the ZT would make the pocket sag )
 
Knives for jobs rather than days of the week.

Sak for food eating.
Spyderco manix for work.
Leatherman T something or other for travelling.
Cold steel sr1 for going bush.

I just pick a knife on my mood nothing more. Unless I'm going kayaking or something out of the norm.
I look at a few and choose whatever I'm feeling for the day.

Majority of the time it's a spyder in my pocket and I only need 1.
 
It's an interesting topic for discussion, but I really don't see a need to find a strict definition. The way I see it, I carry knives everyday, therefore any of my carry knives can be part of my EDC for any given day.

I think eveled nailed it on the first page when he said it's all part of the fun.
