The Mighty Junglas - Can you sell me on it?

I am not too big on crazy-huge knives. I hear a lot of people like the Junglas, but I can't really see it doing anything that the 6 can't do. If I was going to go camping, I'd bring a Machete and possibly an Axe (need to get new of each) to do any major wood-cutting chores. I can baton with the 6 if needed, cut limbs down with a machete, axe or 6.

I am a HUGE fan of the Izula I/II and 3MIL-S for an EDC, the 4 and 6 for camping/hiking, and the 5 for a one-knife situation (will get a 5-S on payday).

Is there anyone here who can sell me on the Junglas? I can't picture myself doing anything with it except for looking at it and saying 'Damn, this is a sweet-ass huge knife!'. I'm sure there are people making good use out of it, I just can't picture myself using it.

Now is the time to be the great ESEE-enablers that you all are!

Some companies make way too many knife designs, I don't think that ESEE does. They make tools, designed to be used. The Junglas was made for drug enforcement agents, in tropical climates. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Plenty of folks are useing it to baton, chop wood, build shelters, kill boars.
It has more reach than the 6 for sure, so higher speeds out at the tip. I think of it as a shorter, thicker machete, not exactly an all purpose knife, nor just a machete.
I own it, have used it very little. I really like the handle and the sheath.
I think it has it's place as a tool, and may not be needed by everyone. I don't need to own everything that Chevy makes, for example.

If you really like having big chopper knives around and looking cool, the Junglas is for you.

Otherwise, a machete or axe will be much, much more useful. That's been my experience with the Junglas.

That is my stance right now.

I do, however, like looking cool. I think I've already got that covered, though.

Good thing Jeff's at Shot or he'd talk you out of one! ;)

I'll do it. You buy a Junglas, I'll buy an 18" Imacasa machete. We'll have a chopping contest. Winner gets to keep the other's knife. :D

The Junglas is a badass blade. I will probably cave eventually and buy one.

So in Jeff's absence, let me say, if you want to look cool, you should totally buy one. You'll get jumped by a bunch of tactical groupies (if this sounds good FYI these are mostly 13 year old dudes in bad shape from spending too much time on the internet eating cheatos dipped in lard.) As to things beyond that... a true machete will take care of brush clearing much better in all likelihood. And as far as dealing with serious wood cutting/chopping/splitting the Axe is the way to go. And... even if you buy a slightly expensive axe and an ESEE machete (rather tan one of the many cheaper but functional machete's) It would still cost you about $40 to $50 less than a Junglas.

God bless,
Adam

EDIT: Adaman, you are my hero LOL. You must have got that up while I was typing.

Other threads on junglas, use search to look them up also, lots of good info.

A big knife can chop wood for a fire faster, and better for shelter building, can also span larger pieces of wood for splitting .

Why justify it, just buy one and find out for yourself.

The Junglas will make you the coolest person on the block. It can chop good, but not the best. A machete will be it any day of the week. I do use big knives more than machetes, but that is just me. They are more fun to use in my opinion.

The main reason to own the mighty Junglas is explained by the Crocodile Dundee Syndrome. At the end of the day, at the hunting lodge when folks are showing off their puny skinning knives, you can whip out the Junglas and say, "That's not a knife. This is a knife!". But it is a fine bush knife, really.

Pull the trigger on one. Its not expensive and IMO you dont buy a knife like this because its practical. You buy it cause you want a big cool ass chopper to play with. And thats exactly what youll get

What's the name of that Busse blade and what does it sell for? I know I can get the Junglas for A LOT cheaper and just as good quality. I am interested in the MOLLE Panel they are making or possibly trying to make my own.....lots of good real estate on the front of the sheath to put a pack on......that's a point I really like.

I might have to examine the sheath set-up a bit more. If I can use MOLLE and some more secure lashing to strap it to the side of a camping bag/take off and put on my belt easily I may pull the trigger this month or next. I don't have any pending time off but may make an early spring camping trip with a buddy of mine.

All kidding aside, the Junglas is a great value for all the knife you get plus an excellent sheath. The last thing that was this much of a bargain was the old RAT Pack kit. The Junglas might even have that beat.

What is that nice looking shiny knife in the middle on the lower pic?

I own a Busse similar to the Junglas and if I was to be stuck in the woods with one tool (no other knives or anything) that's what I'd want. The Junglas will be lighter than most axes and hatchets and IMO more versatile. It won't break like a folding saw and it will also pry and split better than a Machete. Better personal defense than an ESEE-6 and flips bacon better than an Izula. I don't understand why folks think they're only for fun.

well, i'll risk being burned at the stake as a blasphemous heretic - you don't sound like you need one. seriously, you have a 6, you plan on always bringing an axe and a machete. i'd suggest spending your money on something that's more useful to your particular situation.

personally, i love my Junglas. it's well used. this makes me feel like i did the right thing by buying it. you sound like you'd have to work to find a use for it, which kinda makes it a pointless purchase.

it does, however, make you really really cool like everyone has said :)

The Junglas will act as a better machete than the 6 does.
The Junglas will chop WAY better than the 6.
You can baton far larger logs with the Junglas (I've batonned through 6 inch thick logs...try doing that with the 6).
It makes you look far sexier than the 6.:D

If you want to lug around all sorts of stuff with you when you head out into the woods, then by all means carry a 6, an axe, a saw, maybe a barbeque...
For me, I like how the Junglas paired with a pocket-knife does it all.

how many of these look like they've been used? the junglas looks well-loved... probably because it is. if you want a big knife, you probably won't find one that is a better value. i have an old bowie that is almost as big as a junglas and i've never used it. partially because i'm new to this whole survival/bushcraft thing and also because i don't want to hurt that old knife my dad gave me. the warranty offered by esee is an awesome security blanket, not to be an idiot :), but to use the knife. seriously... value.

i'm not sure you'd want to carry the 6 and the junglas, but the junglas seems far more capable when paired with a smaller blade. read jgon's post from last week about the junglas, 4, and izula as a combo. seems almost perfect to me.
