Hi guys!

I got a small package, when I got home from work. It was from Otter Knives, Solingen. I ordered the knives some days before. In the spirit of your TOTM-Thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/987312-September-TOTM-German-knives! I thought I should share them just new and completelly unused.

First is a mid-sized fixed blade ... it looks very much like the traditional pathfinder knife I remember as a kid a school collegue had it. He was at the pathfinders (Pfadfinder on german) and he carried that knife very often. Being honest, I never really like the knife, but I read on Otter Messer that they will sell it out on both versions carbon steel (with or without backsaw) and stainless steel (with or without backsaw). I decided to get a carbon steel (what else?!) without a backsaw. The sheath is made of metal and painted black.

The other knife I bought was single bladed Wharncliffe knife with wood handles. It´s made of carbon steel and the bolsters are steel as well as the bolsters and the pins. The wood looks and feels like ebony wood. Very smooth and warm in hand. I like the handleshape. It looks a little like a swayback with wharncliffe blade. All in all the F&F on this one is great, centered blade, no play, halfstop and a might tanklike snap.

(I bought two of them, the other one is in similar condition - but no pics, that would be the very same pics at all)

The last one is a real beauty, I think. It´s a singlebladed staghandled knife. I loved that at first view on their HP. I didn´t know the width or better said the broad stag scales. The blade is carbon, too. It has nickelsilver bolsters and brass liners. Only one thing is not so great, the blade is not centered. But ok, it doesn´t rub against the liners and looking at the stag scales is just great... some gnarly looking and feeling stag.

And a comparison shot with the might #73 for the size of these new ones

Looking at these knives, the craftmanship of german knives is great imo. I love everyone of them. I hope you guys & gals enjoy these few pics of my new arrivals. :)

Thanks for looking!

I really like the looks of that Wharncliffe bladed knife Andi
I like the stag handle one too, but that Ebony one has nice clean lines to it, and looks to be a real slicer...

They all look very nice, Andi. I especially like the ebony jack with the Wharncliffe blade... looks a lot like the oldies.

Nice Andi, whatcha going to use that big boy for? :D

That black swayback looks perfect for my pocket and that stag is very nice. Great additions to the collection. I am sure you will be enjoying these for awhile. Thanks for sharing.

THanks guys! Your comments about the ebony-wharncliffe knife were my thought for buying it. I really looks great old-school, but it will look better with som patina on it :D

The big boy? I don´t know exactely.Maybe I gonna put into my collection as a display knife. I just searched through and this will be the last production run of this pattern by Otter. So they won´t make that anymore. If I won´t do so it will take a walk inside my tool-box :)

That wharncliffe knife looks like it would make a great user.

Well that blade shape looks very usefull and safe with the guard. That big end cap screams to be used like a hammer in your tool box. TOugh Choice indeed ;)

Thanks Andi! I like them all but the ebony sheepsfoot looks like a knife that would spend a lot of time in my pocket!

They are all very nice Andi. The stag on the last knife is especially nice. I'm kinda with Kevin in that I'd have the one with ebony covers in my pocket a lot.

Love that stag jack! Looks like Indiana Jone's knife from "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Thank you guys for your replies... when I saw that wharnie knife I thought by self: "This might be a good working horse." While handling it right now, I think it actually is a good working horse... bombsolid built and quiet heavy in the pocket for its size. That might be because of the steel liners and bolsters.

Thanks for taking the time to post these knives up Andi, as you know I've been eyeing up the Otter knives. Their Wharncliffe bladed knife is the one I had in mind as a workhorse, I think you've just made my mind up:)

I'm guessing looking at it next to the #73 that yours is the smaller of the two sizes they offer?

Thanks again

Sam

Yes, it´s the smaller one. You can´t go wrong with an Otter Messer, imo. Great working knives.

Very nice! I like them all, but especially the fixed blade. Nice that it's carbon steel, too.
I happen to have my Otter Messer with me today. Mine's the Anchor knife (in honor of the September TOTM).
I didn't realize that they made such other variations; thanks for showing us! They look great!

Thanks for posting these, humppa. I liked the little stag knife, but due to the odd edge curve and long nail notch it appeared to be smaller than the described 15 cm on their site. I'm sure you raised otter's sales quite some with this post. ;)

I have the white bone sheepfoot. Nnr 165 K, I believe. You're right about otter's being heavier than you'd expect but its ease of sharpening and very strong back spring really make up for it.

OK Andi I've ordered the Wharncliffe version you have pictured, will post my thoughts and any German emails from the company I struggle with for you to translate;)

Sam

Nice haul there Andi. I really like the wharncliffe folder. I was looking around the Otter site and wondered if their price on that one (about 18 EUR) is what you generally see them sell for in Germany.
