The mighty Otter is walking... (new arrived)

Strange... because I just ordered that knife for a forum member and sent it to him today. The handle was wood - I hope ;)

But thanks for your information.

To me, it looked like wood and felt like it.

Thanks,
XXXXX

That was a very affectionate e-mail! :D

Hmmm interesting information. I carried my own (gifted by Andi) at the weekend, and found myself wondering about the handles. There does seem to be a grain there, but I am always reminded of the old Rodgers knives I carried as a boy, and like my grandad's 'Bunny Knife'.

HAHAHaa, uhm

Yeah, DISCLAIMER: Names have been edited to protect all innocent parties, yeah that's it. :foot:

I just looked at my own Webermesser and there´s definitelly grain on it. (Ok, I bought it some months ago - so this is no reference)
It looks like very deep black ebony or any other hardwood, maybe dyed wood...

The knife I sent off today is already on its way, so I can´t say anything about it and I didn´t make pics, because the man who will get it can take them. I ordered it, because it should be wood. It would be sad, if they sell it as wood and in fact it´s plastic.

Well, every picture you and Jack have posted sure look like Ebony to me.

The contact I had may well be confused or not know the difference. They could have looked at the page I sent and not looked at any options. They may not have liked the way the cat knocked over their coffee this morning. No tellin'.

Ahh HA, once again, the language barrier tries to stand but gets defeated.

After some more communication, I have learned that "Our standard for these knives are bubinga or plastic handle". So it is wood, but not Ebony, mystery solved.

(As it clearly states in the chart (German and English translated)......:head slap: ) :foot:

Andi, drop me an e-mail when you get a chance. Thanks

HaHa! Well that seems to be a mystery solved! :) Mine doesn't seem to be bubinga though, and I think Andi's is the same as mine. Hmmm

Perhaps they have switched to Bubinga only recently?? Good quality black ebony is slowly drying up and becomming more expensive, due to its over exploitation. Gabon ebony is classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

I think now we got it... mine, Jack´s and the one I ordered last weeks is definitelly no bubinga; the Ankermesser I have bought some time ago, is made of bubinga.

Holzbeschalung = Wooden scales
Plastikbeschalung = Plastic scales ;)

Eine schuljungen Fehler! ;)

So to say... Being honest, I didn´t read their explanation about the handles clearly, too. That little misunderstanding was also my mistake. I´m the one who should know his own mothertongue.

I tell you, the knives made over there inGermany look real nice. Too bad they're hard to find through a US dealer.

dang, those Otter knives look amazing. I can't wait to get one, especially if the covers are actually a Blackwood of some sort! I'd be happy with plastic, I just think they are neat knives.

I'd like one, even if the blade happens to touch the liner. Easy fix. ;)

Andi- Good stuff!
Do you have a Bundswehr messer? I'd like to see someone make a custom of this knife!
My VM is not working.
All is well my friend!

Thanks, R-D :)

Well, I have a Bundeswehrmesser (old version). Mine is from Victorinox. Otter didn´t make them. They were once made by Robert Klaas. I remember, that I had this knife but it must have gone lost during time... The Victorinox is the only one I have now. JackBlack is having a Mauser Bundeswehrmesser...

Thanks, R-D :)

I also picked up a B&H Bundeswehrmesser the other week. Got it for the son of another forum member, but he already has one. It needs a bit of work as it looks like someone has been using the blade tip as a screwdriver. These are great work knives though. Had my Mauser over 30 years, it's had a lot of use, and apart from a very slight bend to the corkscrew, it looks almost like new.
