The Mist - An interesting TEOTWAWKI movie

Now the ending to the Dark Tower kind of pissed me off and ends in one of those circular logic timewarp thingies that I never much like - then again maybe the ending really means that Roland is in hell and punished for what turns out to be the greed for his quest and crimes against his companions....

I thought the ending was more of a shot at redemption, with the whole thing of how he goes back to the desert point of the cycle, but this time is given the horn. I don't think he's in hell and is being punished endlessly; instead, I believe the tower is giving him another chance to save it, but to do it right. The horn either signifies a change that had occured, or will help him change in the next cycle (i don't remember how the end reads off the top of my head). I believe one of the common themes in King's stories is that it's not a win if you sacrifice your humanity to achieve it (the end does not justify the means and so forth). When the tower sends Roland back, it's to give him the chance to make different choices. To not drop Jake, to think before pulling the trigger, to value life above his unyielding will to win his quest.

To bring it back to the topic, this is the reason I found the end of the Mist film interesting; it didn't keep with one of the more common King themes. I guess it's why I liked the novella ending better.
edit: On second thought, I guess it could be argued that it wasn't really a radical departure from the book themes because, David/the hero felt as if he had no choice based the information he had; his show of mercy was the only option.

LOL! I wasn't online the last few days, but I watched the movie (again) and thought about starting a thread about it here around the time this thread was posted. Must be exactly the time of the year where this movie fits perfectly. :D

BTW, I recommend watching Stephen King's N. It's a bit on the Cthulhu side of horror, but it's free and very well done!
Well, nothing against Lovecraft's Cthulhu stuff, which is free, too. (public domain)

About The Mist. I like the ending and I also like how King presents the different reactions of different people in a random survival situation. I like the movie but I don't understand why everyone asks the punisher (Jane) for advice on everything and why the hell he totally forgets about his wife. Instead, we get a fraction of a love story between the punisher and that married, young, blonde teacher...
BTW, the burn victim would have died of shock in a very short time. According to a doctor I spoke to, burn victims like him need to get about 20(!) litres of water per day intravenous, so why risk your life to get some meds for him...
