I'm guessing there will be only a few members.........maybe only me.

:D

But this is a great knife and incredibly underappreciated. So if you're out there--join up with a picture.

I'll post a picture as soon as it stops saying "Oops we ran into a problem."

Those are old Fishermen.........but fine knives, just the same.

Sorry RG, below is what I consider an old fisherman's knife, without the thin blade and scaler it's a modern 121 to me (your mileage may vary). Thank you for being a Patriot and "God Bless America".

A bit of Buck 121 history for you. Buck changed the name from the 121 Fisherman to the Buck 121 Guide in 1985. So any 121 made from 1985 till now is a Modern 121 Guide not old Fisherman's knife.

Now that's what I consider to be a REALLY old fisherman's knife. And what a great sheath.

The nice three liners that have been posted still look like Fishermen to me--pre-dating the Guide, I think.

That's ok, there just are not too many Guides around. For some reason, hardly anybody bought them.

That's why I said this club probably wouldn't have many members. :) Guides just faded away.

I think 2000 was about the last of the regular manufacture. There have indeed been some special productions. My Idaho knives and my Buffalo Custom are examples of that.

I think I may have a couple more Guides hiding around here somewhere. I'll see if I can dig them out and manage to get a picture to post here. That's been difficult for some reason.

1984 catalog shows the 121 and calls it the Fisherman.
1985 catalog shows the identical picture, in color this time, with the 121 called the Guide.

How do you tell them apart?
I don't know of any way.

As far as I know, the first visible change (at that time) came with the 1986.

That was stamped with the new dating system, the < stamp.

So........those trying to gain membership to the club with a random three liner will get an asterisk--just like Roger Maris.

:)

From my stag set Seems kind redundant now that it’s thicker It’s pretty close to a pathfinder now

I can tell with my eyes closed! If the blade flexes it's a real Fisherman, if it's stiff it's a Guide - regardless of the name on the box. My only late Buck 121 Fisherman, it has the thicker 425 blade steel and it'll work in place of the real Fisherman, but not as well. It will also work in place of the 105 Pathfinder, but for me its a bit too long for that design. I think Buck Knives stranded the 121 with the change. OH
