The MODERN 121 Guide Club (Old Fishermen Need Not Apply)

Hi RG,

Thank you for doing this thread on the 121 as it's been an informative and fun excursion from the daily routine of life. Anyway, we have detrminded that a 121 factory Buck knife made after 1984 is truely a 121 Guide and not an old Fishermans knife (right?). Well if you look at the 121 I submitted for your thread it has Buck factory etching showing it was given as a 1999 BCCI membership drive award. I am not the origanal owner of this knife so it was not awarded to me, but it may have beed writen about in an old BCCI news letter. So off to the BCCI web site to have a look and low and behold it was in the May of 2000 news letter. This 121 was given to club member MR. Murray Andrews as the second place winner of the membership drive by the then BCCI Club Administrator MR. Joe Houser (Buck Ink was running the club at that time). So as my knife was made by the Buck factory, etched by the Buck factory, and given as an award by the Buck factory in 1999 it was clearly called a 121 Guide during that time frame. So, did I make my case for your Guide club (LOL)?

Nice try, but no cigar. Because, this is what I think happened.......

They may have done it up for the award in 1999, but it looks to me like they used a beautiful older customized knife and etched the blade.

The two Micarta spacers in the pommel lead me to believe it would be one of the fairly rare 1981 knives with the addition of a stag handle.

So, that means it's likely a Fisherman and not a Guide.

But since it's such a beautiful knife you can get in anyway and you don't even have to suffer the indignity of an asterisk.

:D

Oh, and thanks for the historical info on the knife. Very interesting and you sure can be proud to own it.

This is a true guide and a really odd one.

I saw it on e-Bay a few years back and at first I couldn't figure out why it seemed so odd.

These were supposed to be done in brass so this is a mystery knife. Where did it come from? All I know is e-Bay.

I'm guessing there will be only a few members.........maybe only me.

:D

But this is a great knife and incredibly underappreciated. So if you're out there--join up with a picture.

I'll post a picture as soon as it stops saying "Oops we ran into a problem."

I wish they'd have Joe make a shout out to the Theater Knife.......maybe call it the Red Widow.
And then--how about a 121 Guide in brass with a beautiful walnut handle and Malachite bands and an Idaho stamp on the tang.
Oh........gosh, they already did.
And I got them

He's selling the new 121 Guide Joe Houser Limited Edition that Buck sells for $225 for $199.
He sells it with a plain black sheath......not the usual oxblood or maroon 105 sheath that comes when you get it from Buck.
He sells other knives with flapover sheaths made by our own Makael (Looper) here........recognizable by the characteristic strange white stitching and plain snap.

So what is this Guide he's selling for $199 and where did he get it? Is it a Blem? It's not listed as a blem.

The Buck Website says black sheath, but that's wrong. The Buck website says only 50 made, but the "Letter" Buck sends says only 25 made. But here's "Craigs4721" selling them on e-Bay.
Fascinating questions. Us good Buck buyers are curious.

Buck got any answers?

Were there any answers from Buck that would tell us how many were made with aluminum fittings?

I've never seen another one, so I'm assuming this one is rare, maybe even the only one.

It would be nice to know that and also how it happened to be created.

Maybe it was just a lunch box knife.

You said no OLD Fisherman.... how about new(er)? Same date as your "mystery knife"
This is a custom by Heath Stone.

That's definitely a Guide.

It has the fish scaling serrations added, but will have the thick blade that's not flexible enough for filleting.

So..........You're in the club!! Very nice knife. Anything marked with the Idaho sparks special interest. Heath does nice work.
