Warning… this thread contains many twist and turns and no particular direction (just like my hound)… but the common theme is MOOSE.

Today I received this lovely ebony wood handled c1896-1907 Trout Hdw Co Balloon Double-End Jack in the mail.

It looks similar to the 2010 Bladeforums knife except it's just a little guy -- about the same size as a GEC conductor.

...AND...

While I was still excited about receiving the vintage knife, I noticed.... Today, GEC launched another run of their Moose pattern with a beautiful ebony wood handle!

Note the etch… It's from Way up North. :)

The 3 1/2" closed serpentine 66 is one of my favorite patterns from GEC and I'm happy to see it offered in ebony this time around.

Some of my other favorite species of moose are the Bull-head, Texas Jack...

...and the Surveyor.

Here's another photo of the Queen-made "Primble" Texas Jack next to the vintage Henry Sears & Son Bull-head. Queen did a great job on these knives.

Ok. I'm done now.

Thats acool old knife Supra....just to show my total ignorance?...why is this pattern called MOOSE??????.............FES

That Maher and Grosh is sweet! and of course the Trout and the Sears and ....oh never mind.

Thanks, FES and Gevonovich.

I'm not sure of the origin of the term but according to Levine's Guide IV, it might be that the two big blades reminded someone of moose antlers.

I wasn't being strict with the terms. A moose is a Stock Knife type Double-End Jack with a clip main blade and either a spear or spey second blade. The Balloon and Surveyor are technically Cattle Knife type Double-End Jacks.

The moose is my favorite as well,i usually carry a Buck 313.They actually called it a muskrat because the frame is shaped like a muskrat but the blades just scream MOOSE!I have acquired 3 of them for backups. They slip into my pocket so easily and they go almost unnoticed till called upon. You should check them out.

I like that old 'un you just got, a very nice idea having it as a smaller compact knife. That is the reason I've shied away from Moose knives before, too big&bulky, but first rate blade combination.

I'm very keen on this latest release of 66, Ebony interests and the Coco version too, I'd like an acrylic but not keen on that Turquoise they will offer. Good size frame for a Moose Calf.

Very nice Meese . . . . . errr Mooses . . . . . .uhhhh knives, Jake!!
It was nice to see "the end" also!! Brings back fond TV memories.
Allow me to add a Moose to your thread's collection;

The moose pattern is growing on me, though I really prefer a jack version on the same frame.

Wow that balloon mini moose and the 1902 model are very, very nice. Don't know that I'd seen them before, thanks for posting.

Have to admit that the GEC bullwinkle was the first new knife I bought in a long time and it was a very good choice for me. Don't know that a full sized moose would work for me but these smaller moose knives are great for what I need. Grown to love the pattern.
