The Moose is Loose!

Hope to see more pictures of the Hammer Brand Mike! I am not much on blade etches but that one is interesting:)

Jeff, fine bone on that Tidioute Appoloosa (can't spell it!!) transluscent looking as well.

I think there are some nice Northfield versions of this 54 Moose with slant bolsters, acrylics too.

Regards, Will

This is a great thread! It gives me a greater appreciation for the Moose pattern. I only have three Moose's but now I want more.:)

GEC with Elk scales and 440C:

I got these two from a forum member who was kind enough to part with them. I have never been able to thank him enough for letting these go. I won't mention his name but he is welcome, although not obligated, to comment if he likes. I adore them both and the Ivory is my favorite Railsplitter out of the 9 that I currently own.
Ebony and Ivory Northwoods Railsplitter Moose's:

The nicely preserved oldies are fun to see. Most of mine were probably "found in an old barn". ;)

You're very welcome, Rick. I'm happy you've got them. The ivory is especially beautiful.

I love my 2010 Forum Knife Moose. One of my biggest, and best knives!

I'm curious, what is a Bull-head, and how is it different from a Moose pattern?

Great to see another Northwoods! Those look really exceptional Railsplitter.

I just received a Northwoods in the mail and I was stunned by the fit and finish on it, it is really a fine specimen of GEC build quality (better than the stag toothpick in the pictures).

It has S60V steel, complete with half stops and all. The grind on the blades is just perfect. I have no safe queens in my modest collections, but this one is so nice, it is really testing my philosophy of using every knife I own.

The only moose around the house since I left Alaska back in the last century. They call it a Lumberjack, but we know what it really is. Great carrying knife too by the way.

Reminds me of an old up north drinking song;

Moose, moose, I want a moose.
I've never had anything quite like a moose.
I've had many women,
Me life has been loose,
But I've never had anything quite like a moose!

Hey, I didn't write it. I just sang along.

Oh, and hi. Just popped in for a moment before going back on the cybertrail.

I really like that Northwoods with the open nail nicks! It's great looking and the handles are super. What a great addition to your collection.

I couldn't agree more! That Northwoods is amazing! I like the finish on the blades as much as the Stag.

Randy....

It's more of a blade thing....whereas the #68 White Owl is closer to a Senator Pattern.....smaller pen to larger spear or clip blade. A Moose would have blades of equal length like the three Northwood Knives above all having a clip and a spear blade. The Remington LumberJack is a tough one, because of its shear girth would be called a Moose....but slim it down and some might consider it a Texas Jack since it has a spey and California clip style blade.

I LIKE the look of those latest Tidioutes in Spring Green myself! Sort of revival after winter, I need it....

So after making the earlier comment about the Remington LumberJack I had to go back and do a little digging on the pattern....I've always liked the two blade pattern for its comfort but uncertain .... is it called a Moose, BullHead or Texas Jack......so here's an earlier thread started by Elliott....http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...hester-2991-quot-Bull-Head-quot-Pattern..okay now I'm certain of a Bull Head. A little reading in Levine's Guide LG-4 and Levine also states that a Texas Jack or Moose is a double-ended version of the "Premium Jack", a two blade jack built on Premium Stock Knife handle frames.

On page 191, Levine goes on to describe the Swell-Center or Balloon double-ended jacks as Bull Heads.

He also states they can have a spear or a clip master blade.

Right on, Jake! Those Spring Green Bones look very tempting. I have been admiring that color ever since GEC introduced it. My wallet won't let me have one right now but if it would, I would be all over one of those.

As I was ordering my new Bullnose Work knife I went ahead and bought one of the #66 serpentine Northfield's in red bone too, just like the photo in an earlier post. I love the size of my 66 frame jack and am looking forward to carrying this Moose.

Here is my one Moose with the descriptive information I copied from the website I bought it from: a Model 1902 folder, 3 7/8" cl. swell-center moose based on a turn-of-the-century S&M, ebony w/ nickel-silver liners, bolsters & shield, 1095 high-carbon steel, 2 backsprings, thick blade stock, Limited run of 107 total pieces, also featuring the new Vintage Knives brand stamping! Yes it is impressive. It is of course near similar to the Forum Knife from here in 10, the main difference being the Forum knife has a simpler Bar shield.

These GEC Moose are getting interesting, the Tidioute Spring (Early Summer on the website...)Green Bone attracts me, but so does the Northfield Gen Stag/Burn Stag and Primitive Bone. Now I hear tell of a stainless single blade 48.....expense never sleeps:D:eek:
