Hamon.

There's just something about them. At once a sign of a properly hardened blade, and a purely aesthetic embellishment.

A meeting of science and art, the contrast between martensitic and pearlitic steels as important as the pattern and the look

The essence within the blade, waiting to be released, coddled, seemingly conjured into existence.

The crashing windswept waves or cirrus clouds of utsuri...

The dark and sinister shadow of the blade's intent

Let's see your favorites folks. I'll get us started with my newest acquisition from our own Stuart Branson.

I hope we get to see some fantastic hamons!
There are certainly more than a few I have enjoyed making.
Below are just a couple examples of how the hamon, and the way the maker exposes them, can entertain us all!

And the first year the CKCA had a "Club Knife" I had to do twenty of these:

Karl,

Both are great, but that Bowie is just outstanding. It's just dripping with aggression!

Thanks for posting.

No discussion of hamon is complete without a Don Hanson bowie.

here's a nice little hamon from one of my true favourites, Stu Branson;

Lorien,

You've got a lot of nice knives, but I've always counted that one amongst my most envied. Great pattern on that hamon that really compliments the knife.

that's cool, thanks! Stuart has that little knife now, and he's gonna make some kind of wooden scabbard for it.

Lorien--I think that's a really fantastic idea. Yours or his? Please post or pm me the pics when you have them.

Let's keep the hamons comin people. I know there are some collectors and makers holding out on us.

btw I was a c hair away from attempting to acquire the knife in the op. Seth you are smart to have picked that up:thumbup:.

so far as the scabbard, that was my plan. As much as I like the leather sheath for it, it really doesn't quite work as a holistic contruct. Practical, but this knife is a little too special to exist solely in a realm of pragmatism.
Further development of this piece is required:)
