The NEW Benchmade Knife Co.

Personally I'm glad Benchmade has decided to produce less expensive knives. I will probably be buying a Rant bowie cause it looks cool and the Gamer also cause they are right in my price range. Not all of us knifeknuts are well off, in my case I'm flat out broke. I like knives that I can afford like the Becker series, CRKT's, Bucks, Mora knives, etc. I would love to afford a BM 42, a Busse, a Sebenza but I dont think it's gonna happen. I think Benchmade is trying to make knives for people like me who need something that can be used hard and replaced if it breaks. I hope they do well in thier new venture and continue to offer excellent knives in everybodys price range.

Yeah, I was looking all over the Benchmade site for that $180.00 pushdagger and couldn't find it. It looks like the pushdagger will likely be available for about $45.00 on the internet. That seems pretty reasonable.

Thats a much better price. I will calm down a little now.
I am still rather upset with the "restricted" crap, no matter its intentions, but eh.

The rant DPT and the bowie looks great. They're reasonably priced as well. If BM still maintain their quality (even though they're made in taiwan) these can be great entry level hunting knives.

Personally i would still buy their red line knives. At least you know they're backed by great customer service. Whatever it is you still got a Benchmade. Rough it up in the jungle or wherever and send it in for some sharpening.

Hmm, an Afck-ish blade with a lock back for 35 bucks.
Is it just me or is that kind of cool?

I agree that Benchmade perhaps should have set up a secondary brand distinction to maintain the market position of the brand they have fought so hard for.
Something like Benchmade "Work Series" to distinguish their Taiwan made knives. The made in USA label is an important component in their sales appeal.
However Taiwan produces pretty impressive knives these days and at an attractive price point.
On the whole I have a hard time thinking having more choices is a bad thing.

BM gets gang-banged all the time by many individuals of BF. Balisong changes, MAAP, collaborations, omega springs, OOB sharpness, disassembly & warranty issues. Hell, people were complaining that BM sent out brand new knives as part of the warranty. One reason I like BM so much is that I don't get lumped in with groups like usual suspects, sebenzanistas, spyderholics, or whatever the hell you call a strider nut. BM has never given me reason to take issue with them. That may change if I decide that typos when posting prices and attempting to increase market share are suddenly unforgivable sins.

I agree with the idea that expanding the product line is..well okay but I agree totally with Gollnick that they are following the mistakes of cadillac...
But I think that the colored lines make it possible to have the benchmade name while still knowing that there are different qualities.

I do think that there shold be some type of statment telling the differnents though... explaining that black line is auto made in the USA, red line is POS made in twain. That type of thing.

I also find it interesting that non USA people are replying to say the think that is doesn't matter where it's made

They should just call the red their "Import" line and be done with it. BM has offered less expensive models with plastic handles and lock-backs in the past, he only differece to me is the entire line is no longer made in the US. That should be made very clear to the buying public.

There are lots of Americans in the U.S. who don't care where it's made either. Oh no! It's not made in the USA!
My answer is: "B-F-D" Is your computer made in the USA? Your TV? Your watch? Your CD or DVD player? Seriously, the fact that a large number of Spyderco knives are made not made in the USA hasn't stopped me from buying them. The same is true with Grohmann, CRKT, Al Mar, Cold Steel and others. They produce excellent knives, so does Benchmade. Ernie Emerson released his "Hard Wear" line of Japanese made folders and I've never heard any complaints about them from the Emerson fans.

In his letter "Message from Les de Asis" on Benchmade's site, Les made it very clear that the "Red Line" will be built to Benchmade specifications by offshore manufacturers. He's not hiding this fact from anyone. If Benchmade can monitor the manufacturer for good QC there shouldn't be any problem. If Benchmade can release knives that have the quality and appealing features that I want at a comparable cost to what CRKT produces, I'm all for it. Besides, there will still be US made Benchmades so it's no big deal.
