The New CRKT Crawford-Kasper KFF!

Great Review!!!
I've been carrying my Large plain-edge version for about a week now and love it! Prior to purchasing, I had serious reservations about the LAWKS, due to the advertisement photos. It looked like it would impede a saber grip and a reverse grip. I was really pleased after handling it in person. It doesn't get in the way at all. In addition, I did a side by side comparison with my benchmades and Klotzli folders. I found an equal, if not better fit on my $40.00 CRKT, than my "bigger-buck" knives. HMM...I foresee great things for this company!

I have since purchased a 2nd size large, and one small for work. The little guy grew on me, and I may get a second one of those too! These are simply outstanding knives. Needless to say, I've still spent less than you would on ONE: BM, REKAT, or high-end Spyderco collaboration.

Great review. When I first saw the CRKT KFF I was stunned. Awesome knife. Then when I found out what it retailed for $60, I was blown away. I've seen them advertised here on BF.com for as low as $30!

I was so impressed I bought one for a Father's Day present. And I might add, I'd have bought it at twice the retail price.

Keep up the good work.

I bought the CRKT-Kaspar Folding Fighter (KFF) on a recent trip to South Africa. I was very impressed with the design, I was also impressed by the manufacture. I had severe reservations regarding the materials, well, the blade steel to be specific.
However, when I returned I accessed this review and was delighted to read your very comprehensive tests, which have given me confidence in the steel. It seems that AUS-6 is not a poor choice after all (even Spyderco have chosen it for a new model).
Mario, many thanks for your very thorough review and tests. You have done a big favour to all CRKT-KFF users and potential buyers.

Gaucho, thanks again, I just received today a large and a small KFF plain edge from Mark at MJS Knives, I couldn't pass up on the large at those prices, although the small will be my everyday carry. CRKT did an excellent job of reproducing the custom version in the way it feels in the hand. I even like the way the liner lock is easier to reach than the custom version, which I've always had a problem with. If anyone is considering buying one of these knives, do it, they would be a bargain at twice the price.

Den and Phil,

You guys are more than welcome. I'm glad to hear that you like the KFF as much as I do. It is the most tactical folder for the money that I've ever used, by far. And it continues to hold up beautifully to constant training.

Enjoy!

Tuvo muy mala suerte...se callo en mi cuchillo.

Any suggestions on how to remove the beadblast? I think this knife would definitely look better with a satin finish.

After playing constantly with my new knives for the last day, I hate to admit it, but I have found one serious design flaw with these knives. The clip is mounted on the Pivot end of the knife, for Tip Down carry, for me it's just a bad idea. I'm sure over time I'll be able to adjust to this, but why anyone would put the clip on the wrong end is beyond me. I do know this I will never buy another knife that isn't Tip Up. I know about half the people here will disagree, icluding some famous makers, all I can say to you all is that you're wrong.

BTTT

People keep asking for reviews of this knife, and this is the most extensive review I've seen, so hopefully this will answer their questions.

I've handled it in a store, and can attest to the ergos commented on by others.

This thing currently *owns* the "ultimate sub-$50 defensive folder" category, and is
"the best 4 inch class fighting folder at any price below $80".

For the price, it's a spectacular achievement.

I assume CRKT is reading this; if so, pay attention:

1) DO NOT try and stretch this lockwork into a megafolder. Trust me. Linerlock megafolders don't work. The liner spring metal that jams in there blocking the blade could literally fold like a paper clip and fail even with the LAWKS system...that was the AlMar QSV's weakness. The Quicksilver V was a 5.5" linerlock.

2) Want to absolutely own the 4" class ultimate fighting folder title? You're so close already it's not funny. Just jam two KFFs back to back, with the blades opening out in opposite directions.

Gaucho, try this: take two big KFFs, open 'em, tape them into such a "double ended" (Muscrat) position...and do some basic handling drills. The tactical possibilities, the feints and misdirections opened up with this sort of thing must be seen to be believed. You're doing point-forward and reverse grips at the same time, with all the extreme flexibility that implies.

If you can't pack a megafolder due to a 4" legal limit, a Muscrat is the ultimate. My favorite blade combination to drill with is a Muscrat in the strong hand, a megafolder in the off hand!

We need a fighting Muscrat. In the CRKT KFF, we have a basic package so inexpensive in single-blade layout that doubling it to a street price of around $80 to $100 still leaves you with a huge market segment.

God ya. Build it.

Gaucho,
Nice review on the Kasper blade! I need to order one asap. Do you study Escrima? If so, what style? Sounds like you do from your testing procedures. Once again great review.

Geez, I hate to sound like Little Sir Echo, but I have to agree with Gaucho and everyone else here. This is one amazing knife for the money! It seems like Taiwan is the new hot spot for quality manufacturing at a low price - at least when you have a company like CRKT monitoring the production. Good job, folks. (Now, when are you going to add G-10 scales to your production knives? I'd pay more for THAT option!)

PhilL,

Also, CRKT needs to put the pocket-clip on the CORRECT side of the handle for us "Leftys".

.

(I can deal with the clip being a "tip-down" design, BUT having to flip the knife over while drawing, in order to open the darn thing...

BTW, I LOVE these Kaspers!!!.

As a police officer I carry a full size KFF all day long. It's a really great knife for the price !

The handle and liners need to drilled out to reduce the weight like the custom Crawfords. I asked CRKT if they had plans to do this and was told no. If enough people e-mail them asking for a reduction in weight, they may listen. Otherwise for $40 street price the full size plain blade can not be beat!
