The New One, the "1-0"

That is a terrible thing to go through but two good things came out of it,your good memories of Pete and Dave and your obvious situational awareness

One thing Pete just couldn't stress enough...pay attention to detail....especially the minute ones.

mistwalker...I like you man. I hope to meet you some day. You are good people.

Great knife.

Thank you for sharing the story.

I've got to ask -- "One Zero" i.e. MACVSOG Recon Team Leader?

Thought I'd post a couple of cool pics I took when I was checking out the 1-0 earlier this evening.

Fuzz sticks.

And playing with some dried green bamboo. The smaller two are part of a series of push cuts in a smaller piece, The larger ones were chopped and a couple of the longer cuts were cleaned up with a second cut at the tip. So far I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

I was a little distracted by my four-year-old yesterday and forgot to get a couple of pics off the camera. I still used a drawing motion rather than a planing motion because it works better for me with the thicker knives. I think I'm really going to like this knife a lot.

Holy bandwide hog, knife porn Misty! :)

Looks like a really great blade. I am at work, but I will read it when I get home.

Thank you for sharing your story Mistwalker; you might have chosen a very different path had you not had those two to guide and teach you early on. Glad you came out on the right side of a crappy deal.

I'm liking this one more than the Warthorn for some reason. Can't put my finger on why, it very well might be the size. I like the smaller one in blue too.

The one thing I really appreciate about the Warthorn series, just from looking at pics, is that the choil actually looks very functional. The choil on my RC4 bugs me because it's too small for me to confidently and comfortably use (always feel like I'll poke or cut my finger); as it is now, for me, it's a bit of wasted edge space on an already small knife. But in light of the prominent lower guard on the Warthorn, it seems well executed and comfortable to use. Does the top guard get in the way when using the choil? I can't recall any pics right now from the Warthorn.

I have this vision in my mind of a Warthorn/1-0 with a less acute top guard...maybe I'll discuss with Bryan sometime... :D

Cool pics mistwalker, Making fuzz sticks is so much fun I think. Seeing the cut bamboo is just awesome.

Glad to hear you are liking this knife so much LOL. I started to 2 more yesterday LOL.

rskoon I will post some pics later but the to guard and being that it is slanted is the key to the function of these knives Warthorn and the "1-0". wheather the edge is up or down while holding the knife the guard top or bottome fit right inbtween the middle finger and the pointer finger and lock into to place. then you just warp your fingers around the knife and it is just freaking awesome I think. This is my all time favorite design with this slanted guard. Before I got to talking with mistwalker about choils and top guards I was like YUCK to both of them then mistwalker started to explain to me why he felt they were so inportant on a knife. Well I was like ok , then he sent me the drawing of the Warthorn. the rest is history as they say. as to the small choils I was like you. I felt they were to small. but mistwalker said to make them bigger and that I would see the light so to speak and he was not kidding now remember this is for me... I just love them choils and that top guard because it is slanted ( not straight up and down) . That made all the difference well to me anyways.

Thank you Bryan  One of these days, I'll need to handle one for myself :). The development of the Warthorn and subsequent knives looks like a real success story in maker-customer interaction!

we can survive some real monsters and turn out pretty good. great photos and looks like you were raised in texas from your condiments.guy that works with me was put off at a bus stop by his parents when he was 13.raised by family of a mexican buddy.people wondered why a whitey spoke such good spanish when he got into high school.he is ahonest and hard working buddy. my brother and i had a violent childhood no guns but a butcher knife and lots of knocking around.he is a millionare now and i'm in pretty good conditions.one question i would ask [ could you ever forgive] i could'nt even though he has been dead 19 yrs.

Hey Mist,

Know you for a while and I never would have guessed you had such a dark chapter in your past. Thank you for sharing it. But you must realize that thank Pete and Dave each time you take all the time to do such detailed and honest reviews for us, or help one of the folks out looking for information. And of course by being a great Dad and husband.

Like gunknifenut, I hope we can met up on day. Reading stories like this makes me think how much better we can make the world by each of striving to be an "Uncle Dave" or "Uncle Pete" to someone that needs it....

The blade looks great, and you sure like it, thou I never would have thought it would be a style you'd pick. But it looks solid in your grip and you sure make it "work" for you.

Thanks for the great review (as always).

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll respond more in a bit and post some pics I took earlier to answer some questions. Right now I'm about to cook dinner and let my little one watch a video on my computer.

Hi rskoon, and others LOL here is a few pics if the same design but a bigger blade. In this pic I have the edge down but look at the close up of where I put my hand at on the slanted guard.

In this pic I have my fingers wrapped around the slanted guard area.
101_1976.jpg

In these 2 pics you can see the edge is up and again the same thing with the slanted guard does not get in the way and I just can not say enough about this design I just love it.

as you can see in the pics that edge up or down the sucker is locked in my hand and that is what mistwalker was telling me when we were chatting about a slanted guard.

here is a pic of a straight up and down guard

now the slanted one

now with my fingers wrapped around the slanted guard.

anyways I hope this helps ya some with why the slanted guard is more comfy to handle and hold than a straight up and down one also the top guard is a great place to put your thumb on when striking your firesteel and have the most control I have ever had when striking my firesteel.

Well as mistwalker would say if you read any of his going to the office threads he started here in the W&SS part kathy and I are heading back to our office now after I type this for a few more hours of tree cutting.

Well take care all

Bryan

Wow, thanks for the pics Bryan  (and in advance for the pics I know you took too, Mistwalker :)). I see now, exactly what you explained to me. It looks VERY secure indeed in either grip  Thanks!
