I'm curious how I'll do with altitude. Haven't hiked at more than ~8,000, and am used to being at almost sea level, so I might have had a hard time keeping up on your trip, anyway!
I live at 300' above sea level, and I definitely feel the elevation, too. You just have to learn how to deal with it. The first backpacking trip I have planned this year is an overnight trip, and we will drive from my house to the trailhead at 7800' and hike in to the lake we will camp at, which is 10,400'. That is a fast 10,000' elevation gain, and when I do that I have to be careful when bending over to set up the tent, cook, etc, because if I stand back up quickly the world begins to spin. On the longer trips I feel much better after the first couple days.
The second day of that trip we will get up in the morning and summit this peak (12,343') before heading back out and going home:
It's a really fun summit, small and with good drops on all sides so you really feel like you are top of something. Here is my son on the final approach:
Here he is sleeping off his altitude sickness, note that the rocks immediately above his head are 1400' below him:
View from the top looking east toward the Whitney group:
View from the top looking north toward the Kaweahs (I will be there on my long trip this summer):
On the way back down from the summit we will circle around to this lake before getting back to camp:
I'm still working on setting the date for that overnight, it will be June 29-30, July 6-7, or July 13-14. Once I get the final list of participants we will set the date and get the permit.
