The NEW Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!

Hikingmano - that cut tree looks like fatwood in the making. I'm not that familiar with most of the flowers on the coast, but your third flower picture (purple one) is Lupine, and the 11th flower picture (deep indigo-violet) is Larkspur.

Matthew - Those cones look like larch, where was that picture taken? I grew up in the Southern Tier and I don't recall seeing any larch in that immediate area.

These pictures are all at Marion Lake (10,296', 3148M for those on the other side of the pond) in Kings Canyon NP. A good five miles from the nearest trail, we had it all to ourselves; we spent the night there.

Thanks Lambertiana  The Lupine I knew because it's pretty common here, the others not so much. I'll try and look them up tomorrow.

Beautiful lake! And 5 miles from the nearest trail =:thumbup:

Thanks, redsquid2, but I'm just a hacker givin' it my best!!

Lambertiana, this was in the Erie County forestry in Sardinia. The forestry is just about 4 miles from my house, so I run the dogs there quite a bit. There's lots of larch out here, just not necessarily in standing groves.

Gorgeous shots of King's Canyon, btw - such a beautiful area of the world!

where is this? amazing!

Dan, to which post are you referring? My pictures were taken in the middle of Kings Canyon National Park. You can see more from that particular trip here:

I'm getting anxious to head back to the high country, with this year's low snowpack access will be coming soon. I have a similar nine-day trip planned for late July in southern Kings Canyon/northern Sequoia that will be in equally beautiful areas. I still have a spot or two available on my permit for those adventurous enough to go with me....

A few random pics from last weekend. Just to keep with the spring/early summer time...

Heading to Tahoe this weekend for a lil bit of car camping...hoping to hit some trails and avoid most of the crowd....

Hope everyone else has a good Memorial Day weekend!

The strawberries are starting to grow here as well. Looking forward to...eating them all! Mwoehahaha. Great pics HM!

Pictures from the lower part of Lake Basin, in the middle of Kings Canyon NP. Again, far from any trails, so solitude is the norm here.

Marion Lake is in the low spot there, and Red Pass, which we crossed on the way in, is the large saddle a little right of center

Wow, RogueBowie! The Yosemite pics are breathtaking.

My wife sometimes teases me for bringing my kit for a simple dayhike in the woods. She wasn't in a teasing mood today.

GS, I know what you mean :D

Lambertiana: of course, nothing but envy.

Nice shots from Yosemite RogueBowie!

Kamagong, what happened? Sole came off, or did you suffer an actual injury?

Just back from Tahoe, hope to post a pic or two when I sift through the pics later. Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend, and thank you for those who've served.

Kamagong, what happened? Sole came off, or did you suffer an actual injury?

No injury thankfully. The family went to check out the redwoods today. Thirty minutes in, my wife's sole came apart leaving little bits of foam and rubber on the trail. So much for planned outings. Took out the paracord, and moments later we were ready to go. That is until the sole from my wife's other shoe decided to give us an encore performance. We took that as a sign and headed back home.

Good job (on the being prepared part) I've never seen a shoe come apart like that before... even crazier that it happened to both shoes.

Some pics from my car-camping trip in Tahoe last weekend with my GF. Didn't take too many; the lighting didn't seem to want to cooperate for much of the weekend.

The trip started off on the colder side. It was around 5*C during the day at lake elevation (about 6,400'). We got a snow and hail flurries every once in a while. With the wind, it made for a chilly camp set-up. First trip in new car-camping tent: REI Hobitat 4.

The stuff I use most often, except for the machete. I actually have used the 18" more than the 14", although I haven't used either a whole lot yet. The things I use most when hiking or camping are the fixed blade (NWA Sierra Scout), hatchet (convexed 14" Fiskars), and Vic (PE OHT). The silky comes in handy too.

Hi, guys. For those I'm new let me introduce briefly.
I'm FUJITA Yuji from Kamakura, Japan. I love off-the-piste skiing, climbing and other outdoor activities in general.

Here's a story of varied tits pair nested in my yard this spring. Although there's no great field shot but this story made me feel
the field close to me as much as my greatest climbing achievment.
2012.04.22.R0012172.JPG

The entrance hole size is quite critical to this particular spice. If it is too large, other larger bird will invade
and their chicks will be killed. Actually the size was too small that I managed to enlarge the entrance
with my homemade blade (sorry for no blade shot).
2012.04.22.R0012177.JPG

chicks poop is being taken away by the parent. This is important for two reasons. One thing is to keep
the nest clean, obviously. Other is more critical, to reduce the smell and avoid being detected by the predators.

2012.05.01.R0012334.JPG

The chicks in the nest. They are about two weeks old (from the day they hatched).
I didn't take this shot on purpose. It was my mistake that I opened the nest box.

2012.05.03.R0012607.JPG
2012.05.03.R0012610.JPG

After they fledged, I could look more closely. The nest is built based on moss, over which a layer of fur lies.
The fur thickness in the bowl reaches almost an inch and I could feel the warmth even with my finger.
The bowl size is about 3 and a half inches in diameter and two inches in depth.
Thanks for watching and reading.

Hiking Mano;
Emerald Bay looks like an awesome place to be, both for architacture and Nature.

Fujita; the bird information is fascinating, and such interesting pictures.
