Thanks Redsquid, even though Tahoe can get a little crowded especially on holiday weekends, you can still enjoy the beauty there.

And, ditto:
[...]Fujita; the bird information is fascinating, and such interesting pictures.

Very cool stuff Fujita  Great story.

T, you always get snake shots. I'm jealous :D

I tried to get a video of him, but he was too fast! Guess that's why they call them racers :D I love catching glimpses of snakes though, they are really cool.

"bike jc" and philippines' independence day.

"bike jc" is an annual event here in jersey city where certain roads are closed off to traffic/we have a police escort, giving the bikers free reign...it's basically a way to promote biking in the city and hopefully convince local officials to put more bike lanes. nyc had a similar event months ago and there's another one in queens next month i think...anyway here are the pics i took.

my buddy's old skool klein.

one of the many fixed gear riders - notice there's no brakes on that bike. i watched this guy do a "track stand" for a few minutes, he was basically balancing on the bike by making minute rocking front to back motion...that's a subtle way of showing you have sick skills!

this was a head turner - cervelo is usually a high-end maker of road bikes (as in $10k bikes!)...seeing a cervelo frame as a fixed gear (usually they are low-cost street bikes kinda like a bmx) is like seeing a ferrari body with a honda civic engine!

Looks like a good time JV3 . I love me some good pinoy food :)

Owen, Armadillos?! That's cool! I've never seen one in the wild before. Are you in CO now?

I just got my new Fallkniven F1 back from Kiah of Kiahdex Sheath Systems with its new kydex pants. He did an EXCELLENT job :thumbup: Here's a thread if you want to see/read more about it.

Rare for me to see them. There was another that didn't make it in the pic. I just stood still as they worked their way toward me, and got close enough I could have grabbed a couple of them.

Going to CO in mid to late September. Right now I'm obsessing over it-planning optional routes, worrying about the altitude, getting more physically prepared, 58L version of my 46L pack on the way. May downsize some more stuff, since I'll have to carry cold weather gear and a week's worth of food. It's going to be serious fun :D

I had no idea we had them in the states. Crazy.

As for CO in September for a week, awesome! I've never been, so I'm looking forward to your pics. Have fun anticipating and preparing :D

Kamagong, thats a nice looking Puukko. I was actually just looking for one I liked online and gave up and opened bladeforums to browse around a bit and found this. That is about exactly what I want.

I only occasionally see one as roadkill, but they're more common south of here.

CO has an open fire ban going due to a severe drought, and the ongoing forest fires in the region. White gas and canister stoves only.
Some people are warning that it could be like 2002, when they shut down all use of National Forests, etc. I'm not buying my plane and train tickets just yet, and making alternate plans, just in case.
Hopefully it'll work out, though, and they'll get some rain!

There's no road, though there are trails you can hike in. You ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train with 1920s vintage steam engine, and get off at whichever end of the Grenadier mountain range(which the loop encircles) you want to start from, and can do a standard loop, or side trips to climb peaks, to alpine lakes and basins, or spend extra time on the CDT, which a short section of the regular loop coincides with. I'm hoping to do a little of each if the altitude doesn't bother me, since the loop is only 38.6 miles, and I'll have 6 days.
The train ride alone should be pretty cool. It's a tourist thing, but they have a car for gear, and drop backpackers off at the trailheads.

Well, I hope they get some of those summer afternoon thunderstorms my buddy's always told me about, especially when they got weather from the south/southwest. At least you're heading into high country and not canyoneering on this trip; maybe the NFs high enough will get enough rain to remain open. What are your alternate plans, if a repeat of '02 should happen?

That train deal is just way too cool, with added cool factor for the vintage engine. Taking a train out to an area with no roads, 6 days to mosey along in beautiful country with side trip options =:thumbup: Not having to worry about a car while you're out will be nice too. My buddy and a friend of his stopped in Ouray on their way down to check out Mesa Verde. Someone broke into their car and stole a bunch of stuff while they were out stretching their legs on a day hike.

I have some family out near Colorado Springs. I really should get out to CO for a trip or five.

You have excellent tastes. I have four puukkos and if I had to limit myself to one this is the knife I'd pick.

...Not having to worry about a car while you're out will be nice too.
Hmmm. You brought up something I hadn't thought about. Have to look into where I can store my luggage while I'm out there.
Alternate plan is actually tempting me to be the primary plan, since I remembered I have an open invitation for a place to stay and a car to use in Seattle--Northern Loop Trail in Mt. Rainier National Park, plus some dayhikes.
btw, Lord willing, I'm going back to Utah at the end of tourist season, too ;)

Hard life, someone's got to live it :D

I wish I were on the trail today. Picking up new trail gear is a poor substitute, but I won't lie: I'm pretty excited to hit the trail with these next time. My Merrel trail gloves are proving to be a little lacking when it comes to rocky, wet, or otherwise slippery trails, especially when it comes to backpacking weights.

Hard life, someone's got to live it :D
Someone's got to pay for it!
One reason that alternate trip is starting to look good is that Southwestern will get me there and back for $280. I have to have everything else, anyway. A couple meals, permits, and a tank of gas for the borrowed car, and there's a week's vacation for about $400. Not too shabby!

Those shoes look grippy:)

Oh yeah, preaching to the choir. So many trips I'd love to do, so little money. I only picked up those Inov8s because I was able to return a pair of Merrell hikers to REI. After a couple test runs, I realized boots like that just don't work for me anymore; they feel too clunky and heavy after my experience hiking in minimal shoes.

$400 for a week is definitely not bad  I'm heading down to Sequoia NP to join our esteemed Lambertiana for a little backpacking in July, and I'll have to rent a car for the trip. I cringed a little when looking at estimates, but at least I'll only need economy and gas prices are in relative lull. Other than that, just food and my contribution to the permit.

Well, whatever it is you end up doing, I'm sure it'll be great
