my wife saved one from drowning in the pool the other day... seen plenty this year as well as mosquitoes but this thing was huge..... sorry man something about them just freaks me out, always has

That reminds me that I need to check the screen on the chimney. This lil guy managed to sneak in the other day and circle my head a few times before he landed on a shelf long enough for me to pull off a catch and release.

quite cute

I like bats. I read that a single bat can kill up to 1,000 mosquitoes in one hour. I wanted a bat house in our yard but my wife wont have it. (and shes the one who gets bitten the most:confused:)

On an entirely different subject. I saw this today and got a little scared. I am not a fan of Glen Beck but I can agree with what he says here. He blames both parties so hopefully nobody is butthurt about this video--besides, everyone in America should see this anyway

i'm sure 2015 will be interesting, if we're alive then :D

Wow, that is a work of art, looks amazing.
that's awesome man!!!! completely out of control....

Thanks for the good words! I'm pretty happy with how well it turned out. The part I haven't completely visualized is still to come: have to figure out how to make a scabbard to match, and I somehow doubt I'll be able to find an appropriately sized amount of maple burl to make it from, although maybe I can find some veneer that will look close. Also have no clue how to do a chape.

tarwar? chinese broad sword?

looks good regardless

Good eye! Main design influence was the Chinese broadsword, specifically the niuweidao, or ox-tail saber, although as you saw, it does have a bit of an influence in the pommel design from a khukuri or tarwar. Gave it a bit of modern styling, and wanted a bit of an east/west fusion in the design of the blade and the artwork on the blade (which my wife did free-hand for me).

I have felt the exact same way! I wanted one, but thought it would be a PAIN in the A$$ to sharpen and heard a bunch of people got them with bad grinds, and not fully sharp. so i just kept putting it off. But then i was offered one in a trade... So I asked Tommy to make the Bocote scales....But then the guy changed his mind on trading, so I ended up with scales but no potbelly lmao.

Finally I can put them together!

And as far as sharpening I got the Kalamazoo 1SM 1" Belt Sander on my Xmas list. I hear it doesnt heat the blade up as much as a normal belt sander. It has a 1/3 HP motor. And i cant find a single negative about this sander.

And I might have a trade set-up for a dewalt 8 inch bench grinder as well.

The Kalamazoo looks like the perfect ticket!

The potbelly doesn't seem that hard to sharpen, the blade is curved but not a recurve like the 'chax or bacon maker.

You using the belt sander for sharpening or are you getting into knife making?

Yea, It is probably just as easy to sharpen as any other blade, I only meant it would be a pain to fix with an uneven grind, or if it wasnt fully sharpened like I seen one with a flat edge.... That would not be fun to fix on a strop!

All i have used these last 10 months is a strop to sharpen ALL my knives. Its time for something a little quicker LMAO. I was going to go with the work sharp but I think the Kalamazoo is a better choice personally.

A machax just looks HARD to sharpen! No matter what tool your using to sharpen it. Still it looks like it would be a pain.

I use a piece of pvc and some fine, 400-600ish, grit wet or dry sandpaper to sharpen the machax...You're right, it's kinda annoying to sharpen, that's why I always side with my 9.

Just a strop? What kinda compound (s) have you been putting on it?

I never took to sharpening with a belt sander. Seems like overkill and I never quite mastered the technique. Went through quite a few (albeit crappy) blades but ehh...Stones or sandpaper for me.

Crimsonfalcon...Really cool blade man, love the etching on it.

Green chromium-oxide, and DMT DP1 Dia-Paste Diamond Compound 1 Micron

It has worked this entire time for me, on every steel i have tried..... But it does take a long time, and on some steels it takes a ridiculously long time.... But it works and leaves them all shaving sharp.

The Kalamazoo.... might be overkill...... but so are some of my knives LMAO

Got myself a Worksharp a couple of months ago - Best investment ever! Easy to control steel removal, automatic convexing - just a great machine overall. Sure doesn't take up as much space as a belt sander/grinder, though I have looked at those, too. If I was going to start fooling around making knives, I'd get a belt grinder - but for sharpening the Worksharp kicks it!

Does the blade get hot when using the worksharp? I really like the price of the worksharp better LMAO but it looks like it would be difficult to use on some of my larger knives. How would it work on a blade that is .32 thick and 9.5" long?

Do any regular belts work on it? or do you have to buy specific worksharp belts? are they about the same price as normal 1x42 belts?

Sorry... A lot of question lol, Id much rather pay 70 than 280, but I wouldnt want to HAVE to buy expensive name specific belts everytime they run out.

I would gladly help you dispose of some of those figs at the end of the month if they're still good -- SWMBO and her younger sisters like fig jam.

That should not be a problem! Just remind me a day beforehand and I'll ask him for some. I don't think they keep very well once they're picked.

James, too bad you mailed my stuff. I would've liked some pickles and picked eggs. But my wife wouldn't have.:D

Hah! Yeah... I sleep on the couch a lot :o

Same here. There are big problems with some weird fungus killing off bats all over the country. That's not a good thing. :( Seems like there were always tons of 'em by my grandparents' house in the boonies when I was little. Grandma was always scared one would get caught in her hair and bite her, so she didn't stay outside much after dusk. Grandpa just said they were necessary predators, so if they weren't actually attacking me (and none ever have), I should leave 'em alone.
