I understand.

I dont plan on doing much grinding.

But the Kalamazoo looks like a belt sander to me? So does the work sharp, just in a more compact package?

Im wondering if the Kalamazoo would work on wood at 1/3 HP or would it overheat the thing? I heard of people killing their work sharp shaping wood scales.

But the price of the kalamazoo id like it if it could handle wood. I mean i could get another cheaper belt sander for wood and still have enough left over for a good dedicated knife sharpener, but i have limited space so id like 1 tool for both sharpening and shaping wood if possible.

Whats the best tool for both of those?

Whats the best tool for both of those?

Just get a Craftsman 2x42 combo belt grinder/disc sander. Slap a ceramic or hardened steel platen on it (the factory platen is NOT flat and wears out easily) and you can grind/sharpen pretty much anything you want. It's not a terribly powerful motor either but I made hundreds of knives with mine and nary a problem. It's easy to convert to 2x72 belts if you ever want to. Look on Craigslist for a used one if possible.

This thing? Craftsman 21513 1/3 hp Electric Belt/Disc Sander (21513) ???

And i can shape wood... And use it to sharpen blades???

I hope so its more than 100 cheaper than the Kalamazoo LMAO

Yep, very practical.

btw, knifemakers often call these things belt 'grinders', not sanders. I think we're having a terminology issue.
When I read 'bench grinder' I take it to mean solid stone wheels directly attached to a motor.

I've shaped lots of scales with my 1x42. When it dies that won't be the reason...
FRESH abrasive is key, and sometimes you just have to go slow anyway. Varies by material.

You guys made me lose an hour looking at grinders.

SWEET!

Yes sorry, I call anything with a belt a sander LMAO.

Is there a good place to get the ceramic or hardened steel platen? And why do i need it?

Home depot. Buy a two inch wide ceramic tile (under a buck) and use high temp JB Weld to attach it.

Well i was just about to cut the large pouch off the front of the potbelly sheath when i found a use for it......

No but really I love the sheath, but hate the large pouch... It has to go.

In breaking news, Guyon is eating at Applebee's as we speak. I shit you not.

I hope he ate the bourbon street steak! Or the ribs! Those are the only 2 Applebees meals I order! delicious.

I went to a little corner greek place for supper. I had a combo plate of gyros, dolmades, spanikopita, and saganaki. Let me tell you, I'M SO FRICKIN' HAPPY right now!

Home from Applebees. Training run in front of me.
Good chance I might puke some Applebees along the way. No Pepsi though. Unsweet tea.

Should of had the pepsi! or atleast threw some sugar in that tea :)

Some of you may think this sheath is pretty cool, I just got it, you have to scroll down the page for the sheath with my knife. the first pics are the guys who made it, its made to match mine though. Its for A Busse, but i think some of you may think it is pretty neat. I never seen a sheath like this seriously. leather, gator print, snake skin, paracord, lots of GREEN. Very unique.
