Looking for a light fighter. Ideas please.

(Already have a CAK, M43. Both over 31 Oz.)

So for the next Khukuri acquisition
I am currently reading (in the archives) all about Chitlangis, Sirupate, Chainpuris, Kobras, Gelbu and Manakamna Specials: the fighter types (as opposed to choppers like the CAK or M43…). Would Gelbu Special be a tad more robust?

How do you gents like the Gelbu Special, if you have one? I was interested in this model since I read good things about it both on the HI site and across the forums. (I know it was designed by Auntie Y's brother Pala, who obviously knows how to design a knife.)

I’m going in the order of suggestions Yangdu told me and it looks like you are following he’s suggestions. Next would be the WWII. As I understand, that was a favorite of Uncle Bills.
Good luck deciding as anything at this point will not satisfy the beast within!

For a fighter that can still be an all-around khuk, I really like the Gelbu. My very first HI was an 18 inch Gelbu and it was responsible for kicking off my HIKV.

I have two 20-21" chitlangi and they are phenomenal fighters, never pushed these into much chopping duty. I'm sure they would perform admirably but I have choppers to do that.

Another option would be to see if we can get some Dui or tin chirra models going again. We may not have them exactly like Thamar made them but if we can get close that would suit your needs quite nicely.

Thanks. Interesting. Need more information on chitlangi, from the point of view of fighting capabilities and will look.

I appreciate it all comes down to individual kami's but are Gelbus and Chitlangis weighted about the same? Couldn't find Gelbu weight on the website, for both 18" and 21".

Having said that there seems to be a nice Kobra currently on the last DOTD! Certainly looks mean.

Thanks. Simply stunning. You're one lucky guy!

Do you have a Gelbu Special and if yes would love to see a similar photo like your Purna Chit. Will help me decide!

Amko, that’s one of the few blades I never bought! Never was too interested in it. My personal opinion only! Are you wanting a chopper or a faster weapon? Get what you like as that’s what you get stuck with.
Ndog said he really liked the Gelbu. It was an awesome chopper.

More fighter ideally. An all rounder, like the M43 however would be great. That is my current go-to blade for a variety of chopping tasks.

Looking for something more for self defense now. That Kobra is looking increasingly attractive. Of course your Chitlangi rocks. May just wait for one to come by...

I’ve got a few Kobras. Pretty fast blades for sure. At least one at 25”. I prefer those made by Kumar. I think he designed the Kobra.

So there is a caveat to what I'm going to say. I have a 12 inch 12 ounce Purna Foxy Folly, and I believe a larger Foxy Folly with a similar length to weight ratio would make an excellent fighter. The blade is quite broad, you get a good sized handle, and my (admittedly smaller than ideal) Foxy is quite fast.

I TOTALLY agree with Scara! I’ve got a 10” and 18” both being a thin blade. Very fast and about the same once as the length!
Great choice of weapons!

Thanks Scara, must say I never quite perceived the FF as a dedicated fighter. This grasshopper has much to discover.

Whenever I think fighter, I confess I think Ultimate Fighter. And Sirupate. And Kobra. As in martial arts. Heck, I guess this confusion needs to be resolved.

Thinking Gelbu, Chitlangi, Kobra, Ultimate Fighter, Foxy Folly, Sirupate...to say nothing of Malla...

Just read great things from veteran forumites (archives) about the Sirupati. Some said it was the most practical.
From the HI site I note they are made in multiple lengths. Already have an 18" M43 which seems like an extension of my hand, so an 18" Siru appears good.

My vote is either a sirupati or chainpura

15 inch for concealed carry 18 inch for less concealed.

I have an awesome 15 inch 15.5 iunce sirupati horn handle that is lightning fast and slender and perfect for carry defense work when my 45 1911 fails.

The chainpura is amazing i am silently awaiting one in the 18" 18 oz i have a 21 inch and it is superbly balanced.

Just my thoughts but for a straight up fighting khuk go sirupati 1st.

There are some great stories of troops using them as well as others offensively and defensively.

I forgot I’ve got 2 18” kobras weighing approximately 21 oz and 2 sirupatis weighing the same. Very very fast blades!
Thanks for reminding me Red Eagle!

While all the blades mentioned above are good candidates you got to keep in mind you are trying to make a choice on two polar opposite end members of the spectrum. Fighter and Chopper are as far away from each other in characteristics as you can get. Hopefully you will do more chopping than fighting which is why I would recommend the Gelbu Special. It is the only knife mentioned that has a dedicated chopping edge (same as AK) yet still light enough that you could use it for defense if you had to. Then again you could use a rock for defense if you had to as well. That debate could go on forever tho. Personally I do like most of us do and get yourself two knives for each and submit to HIKV. Get you a dedicated chopper like CAK or AK and a little Kobra or maybe even a larger Kobra depending on where you think you might have to use it.

Thats a beautiful Chit George!

This is mine before I scratched it up. Its a single fuller Chit. They are good choppers but you need to be mindful that the edge is thinner than an AK so careful chopping on dried hardwood for example. They are awesome for trailblazing through green stuff.

For a fighter, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the reti knives (made from worn-out shop files). The larger retis are incredibly light and fast, about as far away from a chopper as you can get.

This one is 15”!

So, bottom line for me is whatever I have in my pocket!
But, since I live in the Ozarks, rocks and limbs,....M4’s, AK’s!:p
