The OHIO CLASSIC Knife Show

The Ohio Classic has a "Special Guest Club" program that really benefits members who return year after year.

It was developed as a way to show appreciation to the collectors and buyers who attend the show. A way for them to get a little more bang for their buck.

To become a member, all you have to do is buy a knife from one of the tableholders at the show. Purchasing a knife at the show automatically makes the purchaser a member of the "Special Guest Club"

Each time collectors/buyers purchase a knife, they receive a Special Guest Club drawing card from the maker/seller of the knife. If you purchase a custom knife you will receive a card for the custom drawing. If you purchase a factory knife you will receive a card for the factory knife drawing. Cards are filled out by the purchaser and put into two large glass containers, from which winners are drawn on Saturday afternoon. It's kind of cool that attendees can observe how many knives are being sold by how many tickets are in the glass containers. And there was LOTS of tickets in these glass containers.

There are several other benefits in belonging to the Special Guest Club.

Members receive a special invitation the following year and get free admission for both days of the show. They are also admitted early, before the general public, on the first day of the show. There are snacks to munch on as members check things out and visit with the tableholders.

For members who are there during the Special Guest Club Early Entry time period and see a card marked SGC on a table, it means the tableholder will
give the Special Guest Club Members a 10% discount on any knife they buy during that time.

Burton Harruff won both "Best New Maker" & "Best Handforged" awards. I was very impressed with his fit, finish and attention to detail. His damascus blades were also very well executed. Burton has been making knives in Ohio about two years and this was his first show.

Here's Billy Potter's (and helpers) table. They had quite a layout of nice knives.

Here's a shot of the Pritchard-Laughlin Civic Center were the show is held.

(left to right) Makers Robert Fisher and Tom Goodpasture. An ironic story, a year or so ago I purchased two of Tom's kitchen knives from Blade Gallery.com in Washington State only to learn latter that Tom's shop is only about 15 minutes from where I live.

Brad Vise (Alabama Damascus), some great looking steel.

Pete Crowl (to right), winner of the "Best Hunter/Utility" award. Can't even discribe how good this hunter felt in hand and VERY clean. That's Paul Linfield in the photo with Pete. Paul's the president of the Northern Virginia Knife Collectors Association and a regular here. Really enjoyed meeting and talking with you Paul.

And of course, Karl Andersen. Karl won the "Best Damascus" award with the above piece. An outstanding Bowie overall. Karl had a very nice spread of knives including his new "Brute de Forge" line (above).

Tim Balda of Amherst Cutlery. Tim had some great looking folders and think I already mentioned (several times, actually) his sambar stag.

more to come..........

Thank you Kevin for your review. The Ohio Classic is truly a First Class Show. I wanted to post the photo of the hunter that Terrill Hoffman took.

Thank you Roger.

Kevin, thanks for an excellent review. Larry does put on a first class show, I believe this was my 3rd. or 4th. year displaying. I only do this event and The Blade Show. The attendees and the makers at this show are among some of the friendliest people I've ever encountered. Not to mention the laid back atmosphere. Thanks again Kevin for the review and Larry for the show.

Thanks HL.

HL Holbrook's "Best Tactical" award winner (top). HL also won the "Best Value" award, however don't think the knife hung around long enough for anyone to get a photo. ;)

Terrill was nice enough to provide a photo of the beautiful WC (Bill) Johnson Sub-hilt fighter with the blue brain coral handle I mentioned eariler. This knife, as I remember, had about an 8" blade with outstanding fit/finish and was priced at $650. There were some pretty good bargins at the show.

You know, I like a little bit of craftsmanship art scattered around a knife show - but if it could just not approach the level of all that crap at the Blade show. This Ohio show's art "stuff" (craftsmanship) looks like it would have been very enjoyable to look at, and probably buy! Quality speaks!

Wow Kevin -- what a great review. I appreciate you taking the time to share this with us!

Karl, Pete, and Burton -- Congratulations

Brian

Yes, actually "ART" and since Waymond Rubel is a blacksmith by trade, his wife Carol a wildlife theme woodcarver along with Wayne J Chunat who creates beautiful wildlife paintings the art section is somewhat related to knives. Another thing I like about the art section is that Larry has placed them in their own area so that if one's not interested it's easily avoided.

And last but certainly not least is Bob Katilus, a newer maker from NY who is off to a great start in making fine knives.

Sorry as I didn't mean to leave anyone out however time was limited and as stated some of my photos were not worthy of posting. A few of the awarding winning knives got away before being photographed. I would have especially liked to have gotten a shot of John Howser's award folder is it was really something to see.

thanks for the post again and pics, hope to meet you again sometime kevin, it was a pleasure.

Kevin,

I was really looking forward to going to this show because I only live 2.5 hours away. Unfortunately I started feeling pretty bad the day before and couldn't make it. Now I see that I did miss one heck of a show. I was wondering how good this show was. Now I am really sorry I missed it. I won't next year.

Thank you for the review and taking all the time to show me what I missed.;)

Bill
