You ever come across one of those knives that get your heart beatin' a little bit faster? This polished titanium 186 did it for me. I'd love to see Buck produce this one again!

They come up for auction on ebay quite frequently but they also command a pretty stiff price too. :( :( I really like them and think that they would be a great seller for Buck.

That is awesome...

I'm not quite up on the numbering system yet...Is this from the 560 family of knives???

Or is it based on the 112??? The hook on the front bolster looks very 112-ish...(but I suspect it is a 110 variant)... ;)

That doesn't look like the original 186, as the handle is wrong for a 186. Looks more like a "customized" 560. Look at a pic of a 186 & you'll immediately see the difference.

Thanks Mick, it was the 560 I was referring to in my post.

Mick57... Are you thinking of the new Buck 186 model? Here's a pix I borrowed from e-bay...

The old 186, if I have my facts correct, was a precursor to the Buck 560 which is also a favorite of mine. The blade on this Buck 186 is stamped 186> making it from 1987 and the entire knife has been custom polished. I have this information from a very good source. :D

The titanium models all have a hanging front corner of the bolster area which makes them similar to a 112, but they are all definitely 110 sized.

I would like a 112 sized titanium, but so far all 112 grooved variations (actual 112 and the old Bucklite) have a bad curve to the handle with finger grooves. The index finger groove is lower than the middle finger groove, while the 110FG, 186, and have all grooves closer to the same height.

Was there a 112 sized Bucklite??? I have a 1985 Bucklite [426] and it is definately 110 sized.

What would the tang stamp read???

The one I have has the 112 stamp. I think the older ones (some with 2 rivets at the butt, and a canvas-looking handle texture) had the "correct" 422.

I gather that the later version had the handle style (with the lines) shown in that eBay add? Mine was from the mid 1980s (I had it in college) and it was the brown color with the "canvas looking handle texture."

Nope, I'm not thinking of the 186 Odyssey. I'm referring to the original 186, which became the 560 as you said, & had a different handle than the 560. Each side of the handle consisted of 2 seperate parts, with the front 1/3 nearest the blade being thicker than the other part. I haven't seen a pic in awhile, but I'm pretty sure that's the way it was. I know for sure it was different than the 560 handle. Maybe someone here can post a pic of the 186 & you'll see what I mean.

Buck 560 Owners,
My 560 owning experience went up exponentially when I did the following:

1. Send in knife for blade upgrade to BG-42.

2. Upon return of supersharp knife, send knife to STR and have him put a thumbstud and Titanium pocketclip on the knife. STR also cleaned up some blade movement slop for no additional charge.

This 560 knife of mine is now my most carried knife thanks to STR adding a few features that BUCK should be doing.

Thank you,
bob7

Thanks for posting those. Now look at your 1st pic that shows the seperate handle piece (bottom of pic). That's the piece I was referring to that I believe should be on both sides (or maybe just one) of the handle when assembled. Or maybe my memory is failing me (again) & I'm just losing it! (which some would agree with) :D Where's Joe when you need him!

Who is STR and where are they located?

Mike Kerins,
STR, aka Steve Rice, is a Platinum member here; do a search under his name for an idea of what does. He's from Oklahoma and mostly does embellishments to folders. He also makes custom knives on his own. I first saw his work in the Oupa and Friends forum over at K****forums. He's a really good person w/ a good reputation on all the different knife related forums.

Thanks,
bob7
