The old Buck 186 never looked so good!

I'm never sure what the different forum rules are when it concerns posting links to other forums. One thing I know, if you do the search for STR you'll see all the different pictures he posts of his works. Almost as good as a link;) .

Buck 560 Owners,
My 560 owning experience went up exponentially when I did the following:

1. Send in knife for blade upgrade to BG-42.

2. Upon return of supersharp knife, send knife to STR and have him put a thumbstud and Titanium pocketclip on the knife. STR also cleaned up some blade movement slop for no additional charge.

This 560 knife of mine is now my most carried knife thanks to STR adding a few features that BUCK should be doing.

Thank you,
bob7

Sounds really nice. Do you happen to have any pictures you could share? I have a 560 with a Buck Custom Shop BG-42 blade swap. Was thinking of selling it though, I have found that I'm just not a sheath kind of person. Maybe these changes would inspire me to keep it. Too bad someone (Buck?) doesn't come out with a kit to change a 560 into a 186 with pocket clip and hex head screws instead of rivets. The pocket clip alone would get me to carry it.

Me neither! But we'll find out! :D

...if you do the search for STR...

The Search here has been erratic; at least for me [I use Mozilla 1.7.12]. Today I actually got through and got a response to the STR search. Woohoo! :D ;) :p

I gather that the later version had the handle style (with the lines) shown in that eBay add? Mine was from the mid 1980s (I had it in college) and it was the brown color with the "canvas looking handle texture."

Yup, the lines and the lumpy texture in that auction are the later model (but still made as early as late 80's I think). The green and brown box was used on the last of them.

Did yours also have a metal spacer piece at the back instead of a fully molded handle?

Yam,
I'm sending you pics to your email. Anybody else want them, let me know.

Thank you! Nice pictures too by the way. How do you like the tip down carry and is there anything you would have done a little differently?

Yam,
No, it's purty near close to perfect, for me:eek: , and I'm picky. The only thing I changed from what Steve did was to add an ambidextrous thumb stud; Steve's was just adjustable to either right or left handed.

Well, those changes really are what Buck should have done from the begininng with this knife. It's certainly light enough to be carried in a pocket, but needs a pocket clip to be practical to do so. I may just wind up keeping it and contacting Steve, probably after the holidays though, knowing how busy folks are.

Thanks again for the pics and comments, very helpful!

Hello,
Hope this gives everyone an idea of what STR can do. The knife now has a pocketclip, thumbstud, and an adjustable pivot.

Thanks,

..."Designers Choice"???...

Do all BG-42 blades say this on the opposite side???

I think it's on all custom shop blades. replacements on request are done by the warranty department, but the custom shoppe is probably the only reason BG42 blades exist. (Edit: did the Master Series have a 110? If so I would be slightly wrong, but those are gone anyway)

I think "designers choice" sounds redundant. Isn't the definition of the designer the one who gets to make choices? It already has CUSTOM on the front too, although that word is so abused it might not have the desired impact. I would rather have one custom-related statement instead of two, then a larger BUCK and USA in some arrangement.

I was wondering if "Designers Choice" is some kind of trademark/signature for BG-42, and required by those that use that particular steel alloy...

I really don't think all BG-42 blades have the Designer's Choice marking. This tells me the knife is is probably a 110 and was custom designed at Pete's Custom Shop on the Buck website. I have seen BG-42, as well as ATS-34blades with thee Paul Bos heat treated stamp though....

Trax,

I have a damascus bladed 110 that has Designer's Choice on the one side then BUCK, anvil, custom, USA, on the other. I recently received a reblade with BG-42, and it looks the same as bob7's. Different venders and/or time frames? Go figure. Preston

The titanium models all have a hanging front corner of the bolster area which makes them similar to a 112, but they are all definitely 110 sized.

I would like a 112 sized titanium, but so far all 112 grooved variations (actual 112 and the old Bucklite) have a bad curve to the handle with finger grooves. The index finger groove is lower than the middle finger groove, while the 110FG, 186, and have all grooves closer to the same height.

howdy, if you'al dont mind i would like to jump in on this fray with some triva..
there was a brass 110 TS made that had the 112 'hook' ( this is the term that Joe at buck uses) but it is limited to a very few owners... there was never a 112 Ti that i know of... would be so kool tho!
the polish 186 so far is limited to a very few with less then 10 known of... there may be some 560's that have the polish frame but again it is likely that there are less then 10
jest as this custon 560 of which there is also less then 10!

humm... by the way clidetz dont you have a one off black one like this and an auto?

You can buy a really nice NS 110 idaho auto conversion for at least $140. Maybe less.

Wow. It is always nice when you hear that someone or several someones are talking about you in another forum and it is a good thing :D instead of something other than.

I'm flattered that I've been referenced for some of my work. Thanks Chris.

I'm easy to reach and hang out here on these forums or at my home page (link in my profile) so if needed just give me a contact and I'll get back to you.

Nice knives here. I didn't realize the history behind that #560 knife when I worked on it. Looks like Buck had the right idea early on and then let it go for some reason. I really like that 186 model with the clip. There is something really finished looking about a highly polished piece of work like those early examples of the 186 isn't there? I think it shows the commitment to excellence in a project when you spend the kind of time necessary to create that high polish and extra time on fit and finish because as anyone that has done it knows it is a very laborious process to do that and do it well. Many times just to get that mirror type polish on a piece takes as long as any other part of the job. You guys with one of those fine knives have something to really appreciate there.
