The old Buck 186 never looked so good!

I was wondering if "Designers Choice" is some kind of trademark/signature for BG-42, and required by those that use that particular steel alloy...

That's how they come when you get one through the Custom shop. It was the only thing I didn't like about mine when it arrived. For lack of a better word, I thought it was "cheesy" to put that on a nice Custom 110. :barf: I discussed this with Joe Houser about the possibility of leaving that off if I ordered another Custom in the future. He said it wouldn't/couldn't (?) be done. :(

Preston has a pic of his Custom Shoppe Damascus bladed 100, and it has the "Designers Choice" on it, too!!! :grumpy:

I think some clarification seems to be in order here. There was at one time a Custom Shop that was part of the factory in El Cajon. They made the special runs of knives that were sold through the catalog/dealer network. A good many of the older bowies, daggers, etc were made by men that had perfected their skills into an art. My understanding is that any knife made in the Custom Shop was stamped as such. It is also my understanding that every knife that Buck makes must be stamped with the Buck name - no exceptions. Unfortunately, the original Custom Shop no longer exists. These days, Buck still produces special runs and limited editions, but not as they used to.

Buck also has what they call Pete's Custom Knife Shop, a part of their web site, where one can design, and order, Buck 110's to their own specifications changing the blade steel, and scale material. These knives are stamped Custom and Designer's Choice - and there is no option for them to not be stamped. It does not matter which knife steel you order on your knife, standard 420 HC - ATS-34 - BG-42 - Damscus, or what finish is applied, it will be stamped "Custom" and "Designer's CHoice."

At this time, the only knife that can be ordered from PCKS is the 110. A number of us have been asking the factory to offer different models, and they have said in time they probably will. Then again, we have been asking for a long time.....

Gypsy9590,
Great, informative post. Thank you. I hope the new shop starts to take other knives as well. Like the 112 and the duke, for instance.

Thanks for the clarification, but you didn't tell us anything that hasn't already been said concerning "Designer's Choice" on the blade. Maybe some needed it though.

Just thought I'd throw some pics into the thread...

Quite stunning...Is that red licorice scaled 110 from the Custom Shoppe, or was that a BCCI knife of some kind???

The red jigged bone 110 was found on ebay and has a BG-42 blade. No idea if it was a PCKS or BCCI offering.

Regardless, it's a great looking knife. Are the bolsters brass or nickel?

That's a reason it would be nice for some kind of marking on this year's BCCI 110. That is one sweet 110 you have there Clydetz.

Kind of interesting that the scale rivets are exposed, but the rockerbar rivet/pivot is hidden...

How'd they do that???

Trax,
If you recall, the sambar stag scale four dot 110 I got recently came with two pins when a normal four dot has three, with the rocker bar rivet. I like the way it looks, but I'm wondering why the departure from the norm.

Mike -

I'm trying to figure out the logic of it...If you've taken a 110/112 apart, you know the scale rivets are 1/16" dia with a 1/8" head...and it is peened from the backside (gives you a nice round smooth domed head without training assembly line workers to be master craftsmen)...so the two halves can be assembled and then the rockerbar, blade, spacer, and spring put together and the three bolster + one rockerbar pins peened in place...

But if the rockerbar pin is hidden, it must be semi-floating...no way to peen it with the scales on...but the scale rivets are exposed...so why hide the rockerbar rivet???

I like rivets...I just can't see the rationale of hiding one while exposing the others...

Maybe some knowledgeable person out there can educate this ignorant grasshopper... :D

The Master Series had the 501,532,and 110.Hopefully thats thats the only 3 models they made.I bought those 3 when they first came out, hoping I have the set in the series.

Hello Boxcar and welcome to the forum!:D
The Master Series actually had 5 models, the 119ms, 192ms, 110ms, 532ms, and the 501ms. You could even buy a special display box that held the entire set. Prices for the knives today have gone through the roof.
Hope this helps,
