The One Knife You'd Buy For a Newbie

I'd give a Victorinox slipjoint. It's what started the whole thing for me and for so many of my friends. It doesn't frighten people. It has a ton of EDC applications. And it gets people curious about other blades, what makes them different, why locks exists, why different locks, etc.

Besides, MacGyver carried one! How could we not love that! (And thus, my age is betrayed...)

Depending on the knife laws fo the country state and also considering the subject needs I will stick first of all in a Victorinox Spartan first.
It has enough blade and tools to make 98% nowadays EDC task. And it's not thrilling at all. (Every man must have one SAK!!)

Otherwise if the carry is legitimate and going only for cutting tasks (and also if the buyer can afford it) I'd like to say a Mini grip. Otherwise a solid cheap EDC could be the persistence IMO.

Cheers!

I have two nephews who will be turning 18 this fall. Sadly, neither of them are really into knives. Rather than give them the typical gift of cash, this year I have decided to give them their first knife. I narrowed it down to the Kershaw Leek and Spyderco Delica 4. Since it's their first blade I am leaning towards the Delica since I'm not sure if they would be comfortable with an assisted blade. The Delica was the blade that started my addiction and is still the one I carry the most. I'm not sure if they will end up loving knives like I do, but at least years from now they'll remember who gave them their first knife.

If they aren't really into knives, and you still want to give them knives, I'd go with the SAK Cadet or Pioneer.

I would probably go with a sak. A 91 mm Tinker would be a good basic first knife.

A Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Everyone should own at least one. I have a bunch of them I accumulated from lot sales on eBay. I clean them up and they are ready to go. I basically give one to any friend who does not have a knife.

Gave my friend and co-worker a mini barrage. Cool enough to let you determine if you are into knives, conservative design, great quality and good ability as an EDC. Funny thing is he stuck with it and says he has no need for anything else now.

Depends on the person. Can't go wrong with a Spyderco PM2. My girlfriend carries a pink Kershaw Shuffle on her and a Kizer 3404 in her purse.

After carrying a SAK for many years, a mini grip was the one that really opened my eyes and ruined me forever. I entered the abyss after that never to return.

I have to vote mini grip if it can be afforded. Especially in one of less threatening colors like light blue or yellow, even pink.

You and me both. My first knife was a Wenger SAK given to me by a Swiss foreign exchange student. She got it from a friend who was active duty in the Swiss military who knew exactly what a 10y.o. boy would like for Christmas.

Personally, I'd recommend a SAK, Manix2, or mini-Grip-- HK14715 if I thought they were willing to spend the money.

A fellow on the USN gifted a Manix2 to me, and the ball bearing lock just didn't work for me. So, I gifted it to a coworker who needed to replace the cheap Maxam knife he had that was showing it's quality (or lack thereof). Now that he knows what good knives are like, he's contemplating buying my 581 as a graduation present for his son.

I'd have to say a SAK Cadet or Pioneer. Perfect way to start and one of the most useful pocket knives they'll ever own.

My Grandfather infected me with this life-long addiction to steel using a Camillus Cub Scout Knife. ;)

Good luck!

an emerson production cqc7 ? or horseman? :D something you would rather keep yourself :D

i guess my first knife which started it for me was the victorinox sak i got from my father for my 5th birthday, or the 3inch latama style switchblade my uncle got me for my 6th birthday - or my first balisong for my 9th birthday... ?!?! ...my grandfather had a whole drawer full of +300$ puma-style fixed blades just so that everybody had a decent knife for cutting sausages and bacon while eating...

it s all in the genes i guess :D
