The Otley Run was originally the driving of sheep from the small market town of Otley in West Yorkshire (which some of you may feel you are disturbingly familiar with) to the larger market in the city of Leeds. Along the way the drovers would have a pint of ale at the pubs along the way, of which there are many. Unfortunately, the term ‘Otley Run’ has unsavoury connotations now as a student pub-crawl, done in fancy-dress, but taking in only the pubs on Otley Road in Leeds. Most Leeds folk stay well clear of it, since the sight of large groups of boorish ‘frat-boys’ with too much beer inside them is not a pleasant one.

Some of you have been generous enough to remark kindly on my own Otley Run, as told here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...be-a-Richards-Return-To-Otley-(now-with-pics)! This mirrors the warmth and generosity I’ve been shown since I began posting more regularly here, for which I am very grateful. Unfortunately today, I got carried away in attempting to reciprocate the spirit of kindness and fraternity that I have felt here, and I clumsily broke the forum rules (see http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1000797-Todays-fleamarket-finds-).) I am very sorry to have done so, and to try and make up for it, and as a very small token gesture for allowing me to share your knowledge and experience on this forum, I’d like to offer a humble giveaway relating to my earlier post about Otley and related to the incipient bargain-hunting that caused me to be so foolish in my posting today.

I’m going to leave Otley for a few weeks (I imagine there are folk who wish they could leave it for good), but when I return for my next Otley Run, the best traditional slipjoint I can find on that particular day, irrespective of cost, will be the prize for this giveaway. I don’t know what the shops will hold, you may get a Richards, or you may get something much better. The runner-up will get a crochet-hook!

The competition is open to all regular ‘Traditional’ posters (anyone who has 20 or more posts in 'Traditional' as of now). All you have to do is complete this simple phrase, “I would love to live in Otley, because...” You can be humorous, sarcastic, insincere, complimentary, or as rude as forum rules allow. Up to three posts each, please leave 24 hours between posts.

The giveaway closes when I next go to Otley, and I’ll then either use a ‘random number generator’ to pick the winning post, or offer a hat full of numbered tickets to an Otley sheep.

Sorry once again for posting carelessly today, and thanks for the patience I’ve been shown, and for your kindness and generosity of spirit here on the Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades forum.

Kind regards

Jack

Put me down, Mr. Black.
I'm up for another piece of Anglophilia. :)

"I would love to live in Otley because nowhere in central Minnesota can I get a decent shepherd's pie, mushy peas, and a pint of Old Speckled Hen".

i would love to live in otley because i had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before i went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing hallelujah.

Fantastic! I've just nearly fallen off my chair laughing! :D

I would love to live in Otley .... sit down on a bench outside one of the oldest pubs , down a few pints of ale, share stories of out latest crochet hook acquisitions and reminisce about our careless forum postings

I would love to live in Otley, because all of the pubs (bars) in my county and the next over are too well lit and have no dartboards.

very kind and generous offer Mr. Black.

Please count me in!

I would love to live in Otley because I would only be an hr and a half away from my cousins and aunt in Hull.

Thanks guys, these are hilarious :D By coincidence I got talking to an Otley-dweller in Leeds today (a Mr White actually). It turned out we had mutual friends and he gave me his business card. As we were parting, he said, "If you're ever in Otley after dark, I drink in 'The Junction' (pub)." I told him it'd be nice to bump into him again, but I made sure I was never in Otley after dark!

They have rocks?

Okay, I'm in.

More seriously, I've been drawn to British history and literature my entire life, and have a deep affinity for rocks, stones, a sense of land and all that has transpired on it throughout the years.

I'd like to live in Otley* because it means I finally made it to England.

Though I'm concerned about the sheep, the Otley Run experience, teeth, and being waddled away.

*Would I, like, have to stay?

oh what the heck, an english knife would be really cool

"I would love to live in Otley because....well i've never heard of it, would love to see england in my lifetime and i would just LOVE to hear an englishman call someone a bloody wanker ...in authentic british accent" But now i think i wanna hear (after reading one of your stories) a native british person call another person a chuff :D

Thanks for the chance,

I would love to live in Otley because of the beautiful English weather!

I've always had an affinity for England, probably because half of my ancestors are from there....so....I would love to live in Otley because it is close to the land of my ancestors. One of my family lines (Romney) is from Dalton-in-Furness.

Mr. Black,

I am in, if acceptable to you.

I have read your tales of Otley, and I cannot possibly utter the words:“I would love to live in Otley, because I want to meet the guys in the picture captioned "The stranger has come for our crochet-hooks.” I especially love the young guy on the left. I have met the other guys many times after dark, but never in Otley.

Thank you for your tales.

Mike H.

I would love to live in Otley, because I can choose between the Black Bull and the Bowling Green and the The Ring O’Bells to sit and drink fine English beer, or maybe it's The Bay Horse or The Black Horse or The Cross Pipes, so many to choose from.

It seems really nice place.

Wow... nice pics and nice guys over there in Otley, England...

I´d like to live there because of the english tea, Fish and Chips, Single Malt etc etc etc... and the weather... and the Queen... and the landscape... I believe it´s nice over there (though driving on left hand side would be a challenge :p )

Thanks for the chance, Jack :)
