The Panerai Trend - Would you Still buy it?

I'm hooked to nice watches now but still don't have the money (have 1 Omega Seamaster and that's it). A watch that has interested me is the Panerai. However, i'm seeing that it has sort of become a trendy watch where all the film stars are now wearing it. Kinda like Rolex awhile ago. In this past week i've seen Ice-T (in SVU) wearing it and David Caruso (in CSI Miami) wearing it. I'm quite sure there's a whole bunch of other stars wearing it as well.

What i wanna know is, would a watch being trendy stop you from buying it?

Nope.

Being in the U.K, you may not remember that silly quote from years ago: "REAL men don't eat quiche!" My reply to that was always, "REAL men eat whatever the f***k they WANT to eat!"

Applies to watches, knives, cars, hats............. ;)

P-44, I wouldn't let the fact wether "Stars" wear them or not wear them stop you from considering one. I like the style of the Panerai's and the fact there are not many produced each year (in comparison to Rolex etc.). I have a PAM160 and wear it most of all my watches. One downside of the increasing popularity is the prices keep going up and up. They are neat watches and many of the folks that wear them have a real enthusiasm for the brand. :D

If I didn't have a Rolex Sea Dweller. I would be wearing a Panerai. Great looking solid watch. If I didn't have a wife I would have a Rolex and a Panerai  . Decisions, decisions...

It was freakin' HUGE. Not just wide, but also thick.

I have no issues with my upcoming Rolex Sub purchase. There is a butt for every seat, or a watch for every wrist in this case, and this wrist will not be wearing a Panerai.

I suppose that if you want the largest, well-made wristwatch on the block, this would fit the bill.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

they are good watches i have a GMT, my wife wears it mostly now, i like my rolex GMT11 better really, but its a good big heavy duty watch.

i got a heckuva deal on mine.

Nope, I couldn't afford one now but even if I could, I'd pass. Too big, and horrendously overpriced for what it is. For the same money a Seadweller or Sub would be a much better buy, real pedigree. And that's from a non Rolex fan.
Heck the genuine RXW homage is a much smarter buy. Incredible quality at 1/3 the price.

imho the best looking rolex (SS anyway) is the GMT or GMT11, have always thought that yrs before i ever bought one. actually the best looking rolex i have ever seen was a gold GMT w/a black face and a presidential bracelet, the black face looks really good, i would rather have that 1 than a gold presidential, which are also nice. i saw a SS sub last week in a pawn shop, 90% shape, $2300, a good deal, almost bought it.

Like many others i still don't have the funds to buy a Rolex or Panerai. But both these brands interest me. I particularly like the Seadweller and the normal Panerai Luminor.

I still don't know which one would be a better buy. The Rolex will be easy to service and is proven to be a durable watch. I don't know about a Panerai.

Panerai is my all time favorite watch.

The problem is that I don't have $5,000 for one.

I like the 2005 44mm Panerai 90 power reserve.

IMO, Panerai is the ultimate watch.

Jason Statham wears one in Transporter 2 coming out tomorrow (I saw it in the trailer)

Chef Tyler Florence wears two different ones on the Food Network; one with a leather band and one with a ss/titanium band.

I purchased my one and only Panerai, a PAM00061D , about a year and a half ago. Before then, I wore an Omega Seamaster Pro. I wanted a tough watch made out of titanium. I had seen a few Panerai being worn by one year's East Coast Custom Knife Show attendees, but wasn't interested in them back then. I started to find the SMP a bit small and the inclusion of a helium escape valve on a 300m-rated watch seemed llike a design afterthought so I started doing some research on large titanium watches with automatic movements. I looked into the PAM 91. It was too expensive for my budget. I found the pre-loved 61D for sale in one of the Panerai forums and snagged it. I make do with the fact that it's a manual wind instead of an automatic and I've learned to appreciate its simplicity which, in turn, adds to its durability. I didn't no any celebrities wore Panerai watches until after I purchased my one and only. I'd purchase another one if I had the funds. This one was also a self-gift for my 40th birthday. :D

BTW, it's been reported that David Caruso wears a Panerai look-alike, a Ritmo Mundo Ponte .

I like the Panerai, but I do have issues with the practical side of such a big watch.

Does anyone who own one actually wear it like diving? I've always wondered about that.

Just returned from wife's 50th HS reunion. Was going to put on the dog & wear a huge gold ring with a $5 goldpiece center & my military ring that cost over $300 20 some years ago. I started chuckling & broke into belly-laughs & almost lost my breath before changing into silly-giggles.
When I calmed down enough to explain my outburst to my wife, she broke up too ! The only working watch I have is a Timex Indiglo .....

Laughing at myself now as I attempt to type .

Uncle Alan :o

Panerai are really nice watches. If I could afford them, I'd get one. For now my Seiko Black Monster fits the bit. I actually take it off when I hit the scales, it weighs more than many of my knives.

Just saw Chris Ryan on TV wearing a Panerai. He's the ex-SAS survival dude. I think it was a submersible. It's bloody huge. Even on a tough guy like him it looked a bit weird. To the people who wear the leather strap panerai's...how does the leather hold up to everyday wear? 'Cos to me a Panerai looks best on a strap and i don't wanna be paying too much on strap changes that often.
