The Pathfinder Club - Members Only!

Took my recently aquired 105 on a solo backpacking trip in the rocky's. Basically I just wandered way up a creek and lived off fish, bannock, and instant coffee for 4 days. Heres a couple pics of it with some nice Rocky Mountain Whitefish. For anyone not from the north-west, they are a different species from the usual lake whitefish, pretty much only occuring in cold flowing water, they've got white meat but a pretty "trouty" taste. Mighty fine eating!

Wow, great use of four days!

Thanks! I'd kind of drifted away from that kind of thing, I live right in good hunting and fishing so much of my camping tends to be road trips with the family. For a while I did some backcountry trips for hunting, but now that my kids are hunting I dont do so much of that either. This year I found some extra time and its been great reminder that I need to make more of an effort to do these trips. Got one more planned, a 10 day canoe trip/ mule deer hunt in late Sept... will probably be taking the Pathfinder on that one too.

TAH TAH I stated earlier that the 105 was my favorite Buck fixed blade which still remains. I’ve given away a handful of 105s’ to others as gifts. I am going to keep this one tho. Add me to the list

That's a pretty one and the pattern is one of my favorites, even for USING! I am still hoping to find a 105 (and a 118) with the buffalo horn handle, bison shield and chip flint blade.

Gorgeous. I love the wood and brass combination. I was looking through this thread last night and almost bumped it but didn’t have any new pictures. Thanks for bumping it.👍

Regarding the fighting grade. I cannot speak from personal experience, and probably wouldn't if I could, but I know someone who can. This isn't practical tactical, and I am not trying to make claims, but I have a friend who was a Scout Sniper, and he carried a vintage 105 during our recent conflicts. His uncle had carried that same 105 in Vietnam. They both seemed to think that the 105 was a very effective knife.

The 105 certainly doesn't pop into my head immediately when I think of tacticlol mall ninja knives, but I felt like I should point out that I know of at least two people who would give the knife a good fighting grade. I hope to never be in a position to develop an opinion myself.
I mean, that's fair. I don't want to ever get poked by the pointy end of a 105.

This thread just made me realize that the 105 is one of the few standard Buck models I don't own and should buy one.

If I had to choose... I'd probably rather be on the pointy end of the average tacticool flipper/ auto than a 105. I feel like the 5" blade would go alot further towards inflicting major internal damage than mall-ninja styling. I'd want to be on the recieving end of the average butcher's knife even less tho.

Welcome Generalist Generalist ! A terrific example of a very early 105! Looks like it just came off the line yesterday. 👍

After having proved itself beutifully as a fishing/ camping knife, mine got put through its paces as a hunting knife this season. I think I used it on 3 deer (not all mine), most notibly this beauty of a bush buck that I was lucky enough to shoot yesterday. Gotta say, its actually performed better than I expected. Despite favoring short, curved, drop point blades for a long time, I found it pretty easy to keep the 105's more upturned tip out of trouble while field dressing. Despite its straight blade and minimal belly I found it to work far better as a skinning knife than I would have thought.

My one concern was splitting the leg skin open, when done at home with the animal hanging its no big deal... I "case skin" the hind legs without splitting the hide and the front quarters get burgered anyways. If the animal needs to be broken down in the field however, I hate using a knife that will get into the meat and potentially mess up some steaks. As it turns out however, the spearpoint blade on my omnipresent SAK can do this task well enough on the infrequent occasions its required... problem solved!

Beautiful buck. Well done!

Thanks, not the biggest buck I've killed but up there pretty good in body size, and also the first honest 6x6 I've shot. Killed a few that could be called such if you include the stickers, but IMO a 5x5 with stickers is just that.

Oh, and the 105 is still shaving sharp. Never understood why anyone wouldnt consider Buck's 420hc entirely sufficient for deer hunting.
