The Perfect Fiddleback

Hurts me to even imagine that!

I have a Bushcrafter that Andy threw into the steel siding in a Jou Fou sheath right beside me. It is a knife that I will pass down to one of my grandchildren after its third or fourth spa treatment. I love the Bushcrafter!

For me, I am not sure that the perfect FF has been made yet. The knife that rides my belt the most is a 5/32 KEB with a big fat old-school handle. Number 2 is the BC mentioned above. However, the Scandi Arete pass-around has opened some new possibilities. For general use, I think a high grind Arete is awesome. Thing is, I like a longer blade. So I am looking hard at the BC Sr.

If I could have an Arete Senior, that would be my perfect FF. Specs: blade 5 to 5-1/2 inches in length, 5/32" stock (either O1, A2 or CPM 154...S35VN would not suck either).
Blade width should be 1-1/4 (yeah, I know that the Arete is 1 inch). I'd like a 1/8" guard as well.

The keys are in the blade profile. The point should be on the center line. The blade should be very square from the ricasso to the beginning of the taper to the point, so a good 3-3/4 to 4-1/2 inches of straight working blade. The point should follow the same profile as the Arete (less belly than the BC, less point than the BF). The grind should be either full convex or high sabre (80%) convex.

Handle shape should be classic BC...4-1/2 inches long, rounded butt with generous thickness. For me, first choice is Osage, but I'll take natural canvas, OD canvas, Coffee bag burlap, Python Micarta or Tuxedo.

Wow! I think I need to draw this up and send it to Andy!

That sounds pretty darn wonderful!!!!

So, gotta tell the story on Andy throwing your knife! :)

This thread was fun a read. I am going to have to echo the OP. I now have 18 different Fiddleback models and still find the Bushcrafter to be numero uno. It is my most grabbed, used and coveted knife.

If I had to sell all of my my knives and could keep only one, the Bushcrafter would be it. Just sayin...

My favorite is the DUKE! Love the size, blade shape, and that handle!!! (Especially the Honduran Rosewood on my DUKE). They are all just fantastic examples of cutlery.

Was fun re-reading something I wrote a year ago. I can say I still stand by it. The bushcrafter is a specimen of perfection. The BC is the Natalie Portman of blades!:D

It was fun re-reading this thread. What I find very interesting is that Michael was knifeless during the initial post and discussion. Later, his first acquisition was a BC. I am certain that he is not disappointed in this choice.

Interesting...
I have three in Family B but none in Family A. I plan to get a Bushcrafter because I like that handle so much.
It would be cool to see pics of the two families if some one were so inclined.

But now there is a Bushcafter Jr., and this may completely change the nature of things for me personally :)

+1. Certainly, my desire and perceived uses for a HB. I think it will make me re-evaluate my bushraptor, BC and hatchet combo. I can't wait to get my hands on one!

btw, here's an old pic with a BF and BC. As has already been stated, the biggest difference is in the handle, not the blade. I'll try to do some more shots tomorrow comparing the two when I have daylight.

I think I'v commented on this bushcrafter before but this is one cool looking bushcrafter.

My perfect Fiddleback is the bright blue Camp Knife I just finished stopping and getting ready for the weekend in the woods. Yesterday's was the curly q Recluse I used around the house and the day before's was the little Hiking Bowie I keep in my desk drawer.

I do love this thread, but I have a different favorite Fiddleback every different day. Andy's knives have soul, LOTS of soul, each individual one possesses quality, character and uniqueness.

I have to go now and strop my 3/32" Hiking Buddy that will accompany me to woodworking class tomorrow night. That Fiddleback scribes some nice clean lines and is perfect for sizing wedges and shims.

The question "what is the perfect Fiddleback" is similar to the sign handing in my bar, "free beer tomorrow"!
