The Perils of Being a Knife Nut

My hands are a mess. Last week I was tweaking the pivot on this acid etched techno I acquired and while staring at my torx I closed it on the tip of my thumb and chopped off a chunk..barely felt it...sharp blade. Found the chunk of thumb on the ground and my gf went ghost whiteat the sight. hahaha i got the action just right after I cleaned it...

Your body can amazingly heal most minor injury and make replacement blood . Your bank account red ink will not heal itself ! And that can lead to damaging your relationships permanently . Set a "toy budget " and stick to it . ;)

It might not show very clearly , but the cut on the index finger was the first one I got about 30 years ago.
It was so deep that I keep buying knives since then.

Cuts happen more often than I'd like to admit. It's the ones where you cut yourself and don't realize it until you see blood. And that's first hand testimony of a sharp knife.

Just last night I wound up with a bandaged middle finger because I was messing with a new knife.

I think my hands have gotten used to most of the opening methods these days. I know when I first got my ZT 0566 my thumb and index finger were absolutely shot. Nowadays I can usually skip over the period of toughening up the different muscle groups, except for some of the extreme "nail breaker" traditionals. Those still hurt like hell.

Have cut myself plenty of times and have had some sore thumbs flipping flippers that have sharp texturing on them

I've got sores now from playing with a griptillian. I sliced my thumb with my blur. I had just sharpened it and was cleaning the pivot and blade. Don't know how or why but I let it drag across my thumb. I found out s30v will take a very good edge lol

I cut myself on occasion, but never playing with knives... usually using them, and sometimes while sharpening/testing them.
Of course, last year I got a Bradford Guardian 3 and started wearing a fixed knife on my belt for the first time. There was a little bit of a learning curve as far as sheathing the knife goes. I nicked my side a few times, and put a few holes in a few shirts before I figured out what to do and got my muscle memory trained. Add to that the nicks that my index finger got on the front edge of the choil, and I think there is enough of my blood in that knife that we are related.

Stay safe, and keep a well stocked first aid kit handy.

I've fortunately never done anything truly epic in the self-cutting department, but I've done some smaller stupid things. Years ago when I got my first Cold Steel X2 Voyager, I disengaged the lock and that big blade swung closed on my index finger, leaving a cut about 1/2" long by 1/8" deep. I then attempted to shave some arm hair with the same knife, not being very familiar with serrated edges at that time. It shaved alright, but the serrations also put shallow cuts on my left arm. To this day I have faint scars there that exactly match Cold Steel's serration pattern. :D Another time I was fixing one of the toilets at my folks' house and decided to cut the fill tube to length with a Russell barlow I'd just put a nice new edge on. The idea was to gently press the edge into the tube, then turn the tube with my other hand. I used too much pressure and the blade went through the tube and straight into my thumb. The cut was about the same size as the one left by the Voyager, but since it was on the pad of my thumb it was a much bigger pain in the arse. I've also cut ~1mm thick pieces of skin off the ends of my right middle and ring fingers a few times closing folders while not paying attention. As a knife knut, peroxide and super glue are your friends.

Hell, just the other day I was filing on the spine of a big blade and it popped out of the vice and the tip bonked me right in the forehead. Left a gouge and a nice little scar!

This is a close call, if ever ! All our little cuts are shamed by this absolutely major fail ! I hope you are OK, "little scar is nice, makes you sexier for women" said that cunt of a chief when I butted my head into the I frame of a machine. By this time, I already dated the nicest girl in the factory, so I adressed him a silent (but very heartfelt) GTFO !

Dang good thing it was "only" Titanium or somebody coulda got hurt !

I was opening one of those ridiculously over zip tied kids toy packages on Christmas for my first born...with my first "nice" knife..Benchmade barrage and stabbed my left thumb right where it meets the palm..hit bone. That was horrible and stupid. Also cut myself at bladeshow on a Begg glimpse. That was just embarrassing.

I learned a few painful lessons when I was younger but rarely cut myself with one of my carry knifes or even camp knives, etc. Having said that, I do fiddle with them ALL the time and also have a bad habit of cutting myself with kitchen knives. I am not a trained professional chef but I often pretend I am when prepping food. I either end up looking like a master chef or a total idiot reaching for the band-aids :)

I have been careful and lucky so far. But, I did cut myself at a trade show with a knife I had just picked up. It was a spring assisted knife and I let the blade slip as I attempted to slowly open it with both hands. There was no major damage, but I distinctly remember trying to stay calm and nonchalant, as I hid the injured hand with the bloodied knife, while trying to pull the wallet to pay the vendor with the other hand. I don't think he ever caught on. :D

Cuts are annoying and all, but most of the time they can be avoided.

What really bugs me is that my favorite pair of jeans now has a big frayed section on the front right pocket from clips.

Cuts happen, but fortunately nothing very serious since I was a kid. Kids have to learn about sharp and there really is only one way to accomplish that (experience).
