The price of fun is going UUUUUP

This is not my knife JB...I just put this knife up because the style of sheath shown about is the sheath I have with my knife.

I guess I should do some photos of mine.

Plagiarizing photo's???? Come on G, I want to see your knife. Take note that the sheath in this photo is a snoopy style 124 sheath and not the swinging loop style. The box & paperwork on this auction -$$$$- is where the rubber meets the road on this one IMHO.

That's more like it G. Sweet 124 and worth more than what you paid for it! Joe's info shows that in 1973 is when the transition from Swinging loop to snoopy style sheath took place. That data also shows that for the year "73" the two piece yellow box was in play. so your knife was made somewhere between 73-82...sorry the data I have dose not show when the one piece box went into play.....anyone out there know?

I still say it's a case of "when poor bidding strategies collide."
:D

If you look at the bidding history, I think you can pretty much deduce that was not the case as one of the bidders continued to increase his bids in small increments.

that is a fine knife there! sheath is thick kind
i used to bid like those guys and lost a lot..
most times i bid with snipe program so i dont get auction feaver and dont have to worry
kind of a set it and forget it .. max is max and too bad other wise
some times i do bid ahead if i am going to watch closely and want it badly
i put quite a few step bids in if it is one that i am realllly watching really close to the end
then i make last bid if it has not gone past were i can buy it..
but any thing is worth only what some will pay that day..

You didn't read the whole thread. I said the same thing earlier.

As far as the bidding goes, I've come to the conclusion that any bid before the last five seconds is wasted and will often just contribute to driving the price up along the way.

I just put in my highest comfortable bid at five seconds and let the good Lord decide the outcome from there.

I kind of enjoy being there at the end. It's fun.

BG42, That is what I've thought too . I follow that same bidding strategy when I visit . DM

Flat, I have that same knife w/ the same sheath and a 119 as well, with same sheath only no box with those . The box I have like yours came w/ a 110FG, NIB w/ papers from Larry O. . Might, make mine 1982 . But that doesn't necessarily mean thats when that box first came out . DM

Flat, In Re: "big micarta 124's are awsome. The 7/8ths one that got made latter are nice but just not the same..."

Could you elaborate on that a little, I just measured mine, there is a difference of 3/16 inches in blade length. Is that the 7/8th that your refering to, or is it just manufactoring tolerance? BTW, there is no date stamp on either, but one (the shorter) has the lanyard hole, and the BCCI history site says that is the earlier model.

The [early] full size 124's had a full tang, with a two-piece 'grip' with two rivets holding them on; the tang edges were visible and polished...The later 124 had the 119/120 cast resin one-piece grip with the skinny [and not visible] tang inside the grip...The blade was the same length (mostly) but the grip was about one-half inch longer (and the pommel was in two pieces)...I'm going mostly by memory, as I sold my late resin-gripped 124 and kept the early Micarta gripped model...

Also, I just got around to really examining the bidding sequence on the knife in question and it seems to me this didn't go at all like I was thinking.
Looks to me like two other bidders (one, mostly) were creeping up on the winner in the last 15 minutes and everybody (including the winner) knew it was going well over $400 at that point.
Facing the pain, they were......and not flinching.

So, my theory of colliding snipers was totally wrong.

This was a case of some serious collectors
knowingly putting out serious money to get bragging rights

on owning a really high-grade example of a knife.

Glad I'm just an accumulator and not a serious collector.

Somebody got hisself a real nice (though painfully costly) Christmas present.

BG, i re read your post and found much more meaning in it!
yes graging rights and the i need it for to fill that bothersom
dang EMPTY spot are indications of a serious collector..
guess i am there ...
in the one tens i have gotten to were if it is easy to find i have it already
the ones i need now require serious resources to get hold of
i am glad that not too many collect the gold or odd knife issues..
some knives i have put high bids in and won low on luck
but i wanted them and bid accordingly
like a knife fight with money to get what you need...

+ 1

And the realization that you are getting nearer the end of the road than the beginning...so it's time to jump on it now!!! ;)

(No, it wasn't me!...I just think that way!) :D

Just lurking guys. I have my eyes on a micarta handled 124 user that's in very good plus condition with no box. What would you say a fair price range would be?

Thanks

Good one jb4570 except I'm not bidding on this one. It's a beauty that my local knife shop has and I want to make sure I'm not letting my heart overpower my brain. My heart is winning though. It's priced at $150. What do you think?

I think you have a message;)
