The Problem with Feedback Here on BF!

I've only bought one knife here through the exchange so far and I think the deal went down just how it's supposed to.
I posted in the sale thread, we worked things out through email, I paid, he shipped the knife (packaged extremely well!) with tracking.
I received the knife, inspected and determined it was as described. Then I left positive feedback and I emailed him to let him know that I received the knife, was happy and left him positive feedback. Then he returned my email and said he would do the same...and he did.
Easy peasy! And it was an international shipping deal.

If only every transaction were this simple :(

Well as a buyer once I pay by PP my end of the transaction is complete and the seller IMO should leave FB based on the buyer paying promptly.
If a buyer wants to email the seller when the item was received and is in good order thats just icing on the courtesy cake.
I always expect to receive and item exactly as described, so I dont see why a the seller cant leave FB promptly or it undermines the accountability between the buyer and seller process.
Im not saying its wrong as I can see that IMO FB here its just ass backwards.
The sellers hold back until they are assured they are not going to rack up negative FB.
BUT tgis is not a bad thing either as the sellers seem to care about the transaction being completed to the satisfaction of both parties and thats why they wait. This is a good thing as at least here the seller will take a knife back rather then have the buyer unsatisfied especially if it was misrepresented in the description. Ebay just SCREWS the seller EVERYTIME buy reversing the transaction. I won’t sell on Ebay anymore.

Wrong for reasons that others have mentioned.

Think of it this way.

Say you upgrade to Gold and start selling. A buyer strikes a deal with you and pays very quickly so you leave a positive feedback.
You ship out USPS Priority on Monday morning with an expected delivery date of Wednesday, yet due to USPS's screw up it ends up being delayed for 2 weeks.
Now, this buyer thinking that you screwed him, files a PayPal claim after the first week for an undelivered item without even reaching out to you or USPS to see what's up. It then shows up before a PP decision was reached and the claim was dropped and in the meantime you only spoke with PP because the other party would not contact you.

Does that type of buyer deserve the positive feedback you've given them even if they eventually received their item as described?

Ya, thats an excellent example! Looks like and the way Ive done it from my buyer side we both leave feedback after both of us are satisfied with both sides of the transaction as others have noted above. makes sense! Now i can see why sellers here dont jump to leave feedback just for someone paying for the sale. Its only one part of the equation and we cant take FB back it once its left

My take after 2 months here . . . . I remind seller when I pay with PP in the comments "to please leave feedback and I'll do the same after knife is received as described". Many will say this isnt ebay, but their etiquette is once a BUYER pays for an item, FB should be left immediately by the seller and THEN the buyer leaves his FB after receiving the item.

I learned very quickly here that you dont post FB as a buyer UNTIL the seller posts FB for you. Otherwise, you waste your time hunting them down again and thats just rude on their part.
Leave the FB as soon as its paid for or it smacks of you are trying to wait and see if the buyer notices a particular defect first that they did not mention.

After 18 transactions here, NO ONE has ever left me FB after I paid for the knife. Most sellers just forget and a simple prod is all they need, but its still annoying.

Once FB is left and the seller doesnt reciprociate, I can't go back and take mine back!
If there is one thing that should be changed its that we should be able to update and rescind their FB IMO.

The posting of the link is a great feature as it cuts down on the unscrupulous who would pad up their FB.
Umm, No. You have it backwards. Others have explained it well.
As soon as a buyer leaves feedback and lets me know they are happy and the deal is complete, I leave feedback for them.

Why are you so intent on taking it back? Did you mean it, or not?

Dude, you got it all backwards. The buyer should leave feedback for the seller when they get their item. Only then, does the seller leave some return feedback for quick payment, smooth deal, etc. Buyer leaving feedback lets the seller know that what they recieved is all good. Some will not reciprocate feedback for others, it's the just the name of the game here.
...... yep 91B nails this. I only buy on the forums (in reality I think I have only ever sold 2 knives and they were private sales)...that explains that room full of sharp metal that is off limits to little kids....however.... we have seen time and again how many dodgy buyers there are, it can almost be argued (I am not a statistician but I can count to 11 without taking my shoes off) that this would be, based on exposed issues,a 50/50 split of problems more recently. I don't actively request feedback.... I probably have about 60% of transactions here recorded in FB...but I make sure I leave it, I also don't look on it as mutual masturbation or need the self gratification. I think it is PERFECTLY reasonable that the buyer initiates the FB once they are fully satisfied with the purchase. We have seen many cases of buyers pulling BS (like whipping out their jeweler's loop to examine a use $50 folder for "faults") etc or just being a complete PITA for the seller.

The buyer leaving the FB is indicative that the transaction is complete for both parties (a requirement on this forum) at which time the feedback left is an accurate summation, if you will, of the entire deal.

I listen to others and if they bring up an intelligent opinion . . . Then "I" change my mind, thats what discussions are all about. I think this particular forum is different and I've never sold here only bought. I was not taking into account the view and experience here from the sellers that end up having to deal with the occasional jerk buyer. Makes sense to me now that once a seller leaves FB he's painted himself into a corner. And like I said . . I've never sold anything here. My experience with FB is only through Ebay over the past 10 or 15 years or whenever they started Ebay. Their FB seems to work opposite as it does here.

I thought 91Bravo explained it really well!

All of my transactions here have been like this, both buying and selling.

My rules for feedback are very simple:
1.) As buyer I leave positive feedback as soon as I'm happy with the deal.
2.) As a seller I leave feedback after either the buyer leaves me feedback OR they let me know everything is kosher. If they let me know they are happy and I know the deal is done I don't wait for their feedback, even though I appreciate it.

It's inconsiderate when folks don't reciprocate feedback that has been left for them. Especially for new members or people that don't have much history and would like to establish themselves as trustworthy.

Feedback is always contentious and means more to some than to others. One hint, I believe everyone is able to view the Feedback and individual has left for others, that is also a useful tool to gauge the individual from. For example you have received 2 positives as a buyer but have left 3 positives for sellers. Both are indicative about the behaviour of either party.

There are probably more than a few people that don’t even know about leaving feedback. Not being super computer savvy, there was a time that I didn’t understand how or why one should participate in the practice. It was only through members asking me about it, that I learned.
This type of thread is very educational for those not accustomed to trading on public forums, and helps one to learn about feedback courtesy and expectations.

As a buyer, I will leave positive feedbaback if the transaction was good from start to finish. Accurate item description, good communication, good vibe, and unless there were issues ot of the seller’s control, delivered in a reasonable time frame, safely and intact, are all that I need for a happy sale. I will then let the buyer know that I am happy consider the transaction complete. I let them know that I gave them a positive fb and if they are happy, asked if they would do the same for me.
If they don’t return the favor, then too bad. I move on.

As a seller, as well as life in general, I’m a big believer in the Golden Rule. “Do unto others., etc.”

I came in here to read up because while Im new here it seems like nobody is leaving feedback when I have sold multiple knives to members here, The last guy I sold a knife to Blocked me with no explanation??? WTH? The price was right, the knife was right, I shipped the next day on a sunday... I went back to try to Pm him to make sure he got it and was satisfied with the purchase and Im blocked... Not how I am accustomed to doing business... If he wasnt happy for some unknown reason why would he not PM me? Just weird as hell...

Frustrating and sometime (as in this case, baffling). Some people got no manners - others can't be bothered - others demand privacy (on a forum ). Still, there are many who do it all right so don't get discouraged. The more time you hang out - all around BF and not just on the exchange - you will start to discover the personalities and temperaments of lots of great people willing to share in many ways beyond their interests in knives. Others - not so much :(. To which you can only reply - oh well...
