As some of you already know, I (in my eccentric state of being) am currently attempting to have my own INFI folder built. :) Matt Cucchiara returned my initial email by saying that he could probably do the job. I have located an Active Duty that will be sold to me, at a good price, and this will be "head" of my Frankenstein creation.
So what do you guys think? Even if you think this is a dumb idea, please let me know why.
Okay, a few questions for thought:
1) In your opinion (or if you were doing this) Is Matt the man for the job? I thought that I'd like a very overbuilt knife.
2) What do you think of using the Active duty for the blade? It's the thinnest and cheapest I could find for what I was looking for. Also, I like the length. I might have gone with a Leaner if this hadn't shown up, but I'm happier with this size.
3) How would decorate this handle? I was thinking of having a Fizzed (see Matt's site) infinity symbol put on it, however, I am taking suggestions.
4) Other comments/Issues. Don't be shy. Let's talk.
THANKS

Go for it!!! Can't hurt to try... I may, if I ever get the funds and ....., chop up an uncle mofo and try makin' an industrial size frame lock. :D I just like big folders.

I'd like to hear Jerry's opinion on the subject. I figure that he might not be cool with the idea of an INFI folder, which he could not oversee the construction and quality control. Attaching him to work not done by the Busse factory is potentially crossing a line. I've seen Matt's work and it's good don't get me wrong. Jerry keeps INFI proprietary for a reason, Jerry hasn't made an INFI folder yet for a reason. I believe that doing so would require Jerry's permission, and without it I would want no part of it.

Um, Fan of Steel.....
Busses are customized all time.
Why is this any different?
Besides, I'm not not doing anything by putting Jerry's name on work that's not his.
And I am allowed to treat my property as I wish.
Think about your car? Do you have to buy tires directly from the manufacturer? No!!! You can put on whatever tires you wish.

Also, Fan of Steel:
I'm not doing this for resale.
or any other business venture.
I'm doing it for me.
I am completely failing to understand your objections.
.
Also, this is not the first time I have mentioned this, so Jerry probably knows by now anyway.

Understandable... My take on it is: Go for it, but every single time it is mentioned/pic shown, it's clearly stated that the warranty was void and the work was done outside of Busse combat without busse combat's consent.

I'm not sure that he would neccasarily require Jerry's approval/permission due to said property, but would not want people to be misled by the fact that it was not busse made (Obviously WalkingMan would not say that it was). It's like Ford trying to keep people from customizing their mustang.

Anywho... Just my jibba jabber. Let's keep it peaceful now :)

I could be off base on this, but hey... That never stopped me before :D

I would see an objection with the fact that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". But again, to each man his own. I feel customizing is not disrepectful to a point, but rather a compliment that said person has that much appreciation for said persons work, that they want to embrace the original idea and truly make it unique to that person. But I also understand that the design was perfect in Jerry's eyes went it was created........

Oh flug it.. Someone get Dr. Phil, I need a drink... Who's drinkin' what?

If I sounded arguementative, I don't mean to be, but it bugs me that after all of those customized knives that showed up, someone has issues.
Having said that, KnifeAddict, I think it's kind of ridiculous to go to all of that effort to cover your rear, when anyone can go to www.badmojo.tv or see what is and isn't standard Busse. Also, Matt's work is distinictive enough on it's own without having to label it as such.

And darn you guys@!!!!
I need popcorn now.
and beer. UMMM>......
or Maybe a nukable pizza.
(oops, I said nuke, I hope Jerry's okay with that. ;) )

I know. I just want this to remain a cool conversation, which it has so far. That and it's late. :D I think we all can just be taken the wrong ways and get protective over Busse's :D

Anywho... If need be, I can bail outta this thread if I am not helping

This is just my oppinion. I have to agree with both sides here. The buyer has every right to do whatever he/she pleases with his/her own knife. Once you have made payment on a knife, it is leagally yours to do as you please. I am not sure what Jerry's thoughts on this are but I am pretty sure he would say "Yowza" :D . However, I think it would only be justified if you do not sell this peice as a Busse Combat Active Duty Folder and just kept it for personal use or novelty. I think it would be cool as long as your creation is not affiliated with Busse Combat. Just my oppinion.

Check out what Matt does:
http://www.cucchiaraknives.com/
It's a good thought to use the micarta slabs, but it probably won't work, since the folder will probably need to be wider to contain the blade. Also, I'd like to avoid using the slabs so no one think the Busse Co. did it. I think I might do a separate homemade project with the slabs when I get them back, but we'll see.

that sounds like a really cool idea. i have never seen jerry be anything but complimentary to custom work. i say it's yours and do as you'd like, its really no worse than trying to break it for testing. my only thing to add is just make sure that you post pics. ;)

Why is this any different?

It's different because it's using a knife, to create something that the maker has decided not to for whatever the reason. It's not adding slabs of exotic material or polishing. It falls somewhere in between "why not" and "maybe not" in my opinion.

Besides, I'm not not doing anything by putting Jerry's name on work that's not his.

If it was a slab of raw INFI I'd agree 100%. My concern is it's a knife with a trade mark (Talon hole) That puts Jerry's name on it.

And I am allowed to treat my property as I wish....

Yes, you are right to an extent but there are always exceptions, just ask the ATF or Napster. . I just think it feels odd. I am not trying to rain on your parade by any means. I just want to know that this is cool with the big man. In my opinion it seems like it should be cleared with him. I wouldn't want to assume it's cool to find out otherwise.

Fan of Steel, I agree, the Talon Hole would have to be removed. What about the Busse Combat logo  It would have to be removed as well, I guess. Good point about the slabs. I think your project is a great idea as long as you remove everything that looks "Busse-ish".
