Here it is- This isn't designed as an EDC, though it would work fine as a necker or smaller sheath knife. I was looking to try and make something inexpensive to toss into a kit.

I started with the idea of fitting into an altoids tin, but I'm not sure about that yet, so I just started tinkering along. I have a bunch of 15N20 that I had cut at .75 inch width, for the kephart project. Since I haven't felt the magic yet on that, I started using that stock for the PSK knife.

My idea was to have an emergency or backup blade with a design that would easily lash up for a javelin or spear, work as a real knife, and be able to be tossed in a kit and left. (Well, after you turtle wax it.)

I'll have to split this up as there's a lot of pics of throwing and spear chucking.

I'm making 9 of these right now, with variations on blade length, but the same basic tang pattern.

This one: OAL 7 inches with a 3 3/8 inch blade.

the steel is 15N20, .095, so it's not thinned out from what I'd make a regular knife out of. same convex grind as usual. There's a bevel on the spine, but it's not taken to a full double edge, it just helps thin out the tip a bit. Throws well, though it turns pretty tight:

If yer gonna make a pokey stick knife, you gotta make the pokey stick.

Penetration on javelin throwing into maple logs was .75 to 2 inches. And I bent the thing 30 degrees several times working that 2 inches out of the log. Took about 10 minutes!

And she shaves after all the tossing around:

I'm pondering what I'm gonna do. I figure I can, even with the hand filing and the edge work, sell them pretty cheap. I guess I should offer bare, wrapped, maybe screw on leather scales, and with or without a basic sheath?

This one is NOT differentially tempered, but I did the oven tempering at 425. So it should be a touch softer (not that I can notice, but convex geometry is magic) and springier.

:thumbup:Sweet how much?

working on that. Except for the differential temper (since I'm heat treating a bit differently) it's got everything I put into my regular knives, though maybe a bit less polish, if that is possible.

But I think the blade itself could probably go for $50 including shipping, adding $7 for cord wrap, $5 for a blade cover, $13 for a necker sheath. Still working out the details, but want to keep it as inexpensive as possible. We'll see how the batch of 9 I'm working on finishes out tomorrow :D

that looks cool christof.. i like it... i might have to get me one of those..

are those nordic runes on the wooden background on the first few pics?

Great looking knife, looks very tough, well-rounded and compact.

hrm, maybe I should call it bob.....

Whatever you call it, I would be honored to be on your "list" if you decide to make them. Whether the design is "finished" or not, I like it and would be happy to be one of your R&D guinea pigs. Maybe we could warp some hot plastic around it but it looks so rustic that some leather would be a cozy little home for it too.

I have been looking for an opportunity to add one blades into my "budget" (loose term) and this idea is too cool to pass over. This would be a really cool back-up blade in a pouch sewn onto the strap of one of my bags.

I'm with Jeff on this one

Jeff, Bryant- I'll be sending messages as I get the first batch out, then if there's any left after yall get through, I'll put a for sale thread out. And then I'll make more.

Barberphobic- yep, easier to lash for a spear (I originally had thought fishing spear, but I have the throwing range, so......) and for the cord wrap. I think it is working out pretty well. I threw the spear configuration a dozen times and another dozen or so trying to get it to stick in the dirt (I think it needs fletching for that) and it didn't loosen up any.

One change, the 1/4 inch tang holes are nice and big which is great if you are trying to put a handle together in the wild, but I think I'm going to go with 13/64 (a loose 3/16) which is the right size for the chicago screws. Then I can do a removalble handle easily.
