The PSK knife I've been working up.

mike, we're gonna be talkin. I needs quivers, and maybe armguards.... If I ever get the ipe backed bow done and tested.....

On topic- The truth is I started by trying one of those hacksaw altoids tin knives, and it kinda sucked to use. So I tried to figure out the minimum that would still make a good knife. And this is almost a perfect woodcarving blade, if you stuck the tang in a big fat handle, so it's got the real knife feel. the double cord wrap gives it more hand feel than most of the lockblades I own, too. I'll have pics up tomorrow when I get a leather scale set cut out, I may take some of my really thin maple or walnut or whatever and try doing a backed leather.

If I was doing a permanent wrap, I'd use the linen cord I have. There's also the assorted micarta and g10 things that could be done. Anyone have any other ideas on removable handle materials? The cord is kinda nice because the 10 feet that's on there in the photo is about doulbe what I used for lashing to the split pole.

there's 9 of the shorter ones - all in the 5 to 5.5 inch range OAL, with 2 to 2.5 inch blades. This is right before I lit the forge for heat treat. There's a batch of 14 of the longer ones like my photos going in tomorrow.

And I "wasted" half my day trying out grinding some bigger ones, 4 inch blades, 1 inch wide instead of .75

looks like youve been busy.

all of them look great, but the 4th one down in the second column is my favorite of the lot. the 1st on in that same column with the seax-esqu blade it cool too.

mike, ....Anyone have any other ideas on removable handle materials? ...

Yeah, I was thinking .093" or .125" Kydex scales with Chicago screws. Not sure how well it woud work but I am going to try it.

I like the cord wrap idea, having the cord available for lashing. Mike got me thinking about this with his "Harpoon" - an interesting blade to be certain.

a ranger band of the correct diameter could be slipped over the handle. the ranger band could help attach to a spear and help for fire starting. you could also cord-wrap over the ranger band, then you would have the materiels to make a pretty sturdy spear.

a ranger band over the sheath might be a bit easier.

An underwrap is a good idea, I usually use linen cord, but it's not particularly strong. Since it will be covered anyhow, maybe floss or one of the sturdier threads we use for leatherwork would be good. I figure if you are taking the handle wrap apart anyhow, the extra bits might be nice. And if you know how to make dart casters or proper light casting spears and need to do fletching, the thread will help.

This first one is in the kitchen today, making stew. doing a good job, though I tend to like 5 and 7 inch knives better than 3.something when I am doing large onions :D

yes, the band over the sheath would make more sense, although it would be a shame to cover up that leatherwork.

btw, sent you another e-mail.

photos coming soon, I did some wrap by cutting 1/2 inch band and then wrapped cord over. I'm gonna put a few up for sale this evening, have some set aside fr specific people and so on.

here's one of the longer ones. I narrowed the tang more on this one, don't really think I'll do it that way except on request in the future.

wrapped with a "ranger strip"

and with coreless cord wrapped over it

more cord wrap pics over in the for sale thread that's coming up in afew minutes.

Got my pair yesterday or the day before but it's been a booger of a week so I have not been able to "play." Looking them over, I really like the handiness, blade shapes, dimensions and all. I will try to get them out this weekend.

Same here, I think Jeff and I got them the same day, and from the sound of it we had the same kind of week. I too really like the size and blade shapes, and will do my best to get them out this weekend. Thanks Christof

Sweet work and a killer idea! Since BOB (I like it) is gonna be a true survival backup, Would a first layer wrap of fishing line or something similar be crazy? Or a really light wire. Like florists wire? Just a thought. Followed by regular para cord.

i've done first layer wrap with flax cord, dental floss, and rubber. all work pretty well, but i like the rubber the best. I'm not sure how monofilament line would hold up, but i think a short wrap of dental floss covered by the rubber (I cut a 6 inch by .5 inch strip off a thin bike inner tube. it's like ranger band) and then the cord wrap would be great

I think 330 cord is the way to go, the 550 is a bit bulky.

I hear both of you guys on projects. I want to get more done but we've been having 40mph winds for the last 60 hours.... even with my wind breaks I can't run the forge in that, and can't do a whole lot else safely except some handle work on one order.

oh yeah, there's still some available right now without waiting :) over in fixed blades for sale. i personally like the longer ones for making javelins, but for fish or small game poking i think the necker length gives you a bit better lever arm math on side forces- just a bit less penetration unless you make the spear shaft taper really well.

Very nice. I like the design and execution. Simple yet effective. Hopefully you will have some available when I have money again.
