I’ve been dying to get my hands on a Case Bose cattle knife in ebony, but can’t seem to pin one down. The DE cattle knife is my favorite pattern, and bone is my preferred material for scales, but I just love the look of that pattern in black. After a long hunt for an ebony version the solution came to me: put my $500 Case/Bose knife in a boiling pot of black Rit dye. It made me a little nauseous to go through with it but…I think it turned out pretty great in the end. I’ve got the best of all worlds - cattle knife with bone scales in my preferred color. I couldn’t be happier, so I thought I’d share the pics with you guys. Enjoy!

That looks nice, Benjamin. Consistent coloring. I like that a lot. Do you have a before shot?

That came out pretty good. I like my Cattle Knife in bone, but I'd have to get an ebony too if I found one at the right price. Your way's easier on the wallet.

Good result, but did you need a drink or two before doing this? Takes some nerve.....
The result looks great! I'm glad it worked out for you. I'd have probably tossed back a few before doing it! ;)

On one hand, that sounds like a good idea. On the other hand, I can imagine how playing around with boiling dye and sharp objects while under the influence may not turn out very well. 😂

A possibly dangerous combination for sure!

That’s lighter than I expected to begin with, thanks for sharing. I’m with Will and Gary, I’d need a few drinks to even try to pull that off.

I wanted to make sure of the matter so I used the entire bottle of dye in a pan just big enough to fit the knife. I figured you probably can’t over do black.

Excellent results. I wanted ebony also, but ended up with a beautiful chestnut. Although a bit pricey, these are incredible knives.

Expensive, I agree, but I can't seem to find a cheaper version of this pattern anyway. Maybe I just don't know where to look, but since the Case/Bose version is the least expensive one I can find it sure makes the price easier to justify in my own mind. :)

You've now increased its value...as it's one of one  Shrewd move!

I'd like to ask how the metal-work reacted to the dye? Being all stainless, no carbon or brass, I assume it was alright or did it need a lot of polishing afterwards?

Regards, Will
