The role of the modern day urban carry fighting knife ?

As many times as I encounter the "What do you need that for?" or "Isn't that a little paranoid?" or "Aren't you a little over-prepared?" attitude, I will never understand it. Carrying any sort of implement that can be used as a weapon, and being aware of self-defense issues, is a simple proposition: You take a moment to decide whether or not the possibility of violence against your person exists, and then take steps to stack the odds in your favor. It's a yes or no answer. If you're going to be prepared, you might as well be as prepared as possible, within the boundaries of logistical practicality.

If the possession of a weapon -- any sort of weapon, for any reason -- causes you to behave differently, or to "walk heavy," as one gun columnist put it, then you ought not be carrying anything, nor going outside the house much, because you have a serious lack of mental and emotional maturity.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

I should stop talking now, before I make everyone hate me. That's why I've cleared my previous posts.

Scott.
We have more in common than you may think. I never saw this as an argument or a debate. We all have our own oppinions, and make our own choices.

I have never posted in any of the Tactical Forums, it's not my main area of interst. You posted in the General Discussion Forum, and I posted to learn something, believe it or not. I can appreciate your collecting "modern fighting knives." They are a great example of Form and Function, I have a few myself. I've considered purchasing others, the Case V Special Forces, the Cas Iberia F/S Cammando, just to name a few.

I'm here to talk knives, make friends, and to learn from others and their experiences. Which if you look back, was all I was doing here. Sorry if there was any misunderstanding.

Paracelsus, already has a contract out on me, I sure don't need anyone else.

PhilL,

'They' wanted more money than I thought you were worth. Besides, I was only trying to help you. So you can stop worrying.

Disco Stu, I read this thread this morning and I DO NOT remember you posting anything even remotely offensive or out of line.

Thanks Paracelsus,
"What me worry?"
I wanna live!... I'M GONNA LIVE!...
I'M GONNA LIVE!... I'M GONNA LIVE!......
Well, not forever.

Disco,
I'm sorry you felt the need to do that, it was your call. There was nothing wrong in what you posted, if someone takes it the wrong way, that's their problem. I joke around here a lot, I try not to offend. Unless one of the Moderators thinks I'm out of line, I'll stick by what I say. Ain't nobody going to make me EAT MY WORDS! I love to hear opposing opinions. I'll never tell anyone their opinion is wrong, heck it's just an opinion. Why can't we all just get along?

Well, I come off strange and annoying to some people and I didn't want to alienate the whole forum after only a month of hanging out here.

OK, I guess I'll start by addressing the topic. I think you really did nail the question, but I also believe one point needs to be reiterated; any knife you carry should be readily usable as a utility knife.

Someone started a statement with, "In an ideal world..." Well, in an ideal world, we would have no need for defensive weapons. In a slightly more realistic, and more desirable than real world, knives would be a lot cheaper, come in pairs, and NOT be comfy for multiple grips, but in the one each individual prefers. In the meantime, there are 4 folding knives (since most of us can't carry fixed blades on a regular basis) which are clear "bests" in this category. They are the REKAT Sifu and Poket Hobbit (That knife looks EVIL! Ya gotta love it!), and the Cold Steel XL Voyager/Gunsite and Vaquero Grander/ El Hombre. This breaks up into 2 price levels and sizess.

To address preparation... a cell phone might come in handy, and is VER RARELY considered a weapon. If you REALLY want to be EXTRA prepared, you could always hire SWAT team to act as your own personal protection unit, and carry a big tent in case you ever get lost in the woods. In the meantime, try a good all-around folder and a cell hpone (for non-students, which exludes me from either one, but I carry a knife when not in school, and OCCASIONALLY) at school. Sorry about the ranting, but I don't think any of it was off topic.

Thanks much for the info. I’ll do a search on both those items when I have opportunity. Looking forward to it.

“… We have more in common than you may think. I never saw this as an argument or a debate… “

I did not think that you and I were arguing. In my last post I thought to make the point that you and I agree on the idea that staying out of trouble is preferred to dealing with it other wise. From there we may have differing ideas for any number of reasons. That’s OK with me as it has never been required of those I call friends and associates to agree with me on everything. In fact, conversation that exchanges ideas and challenges the others point of view is far more interesting and educational then a bunch of “me to” posts. Also, in the exchange of what you think and why and what I think and why is always a catalyst for a reexamination of why we stand where we do. I enjoy that part of these forums.

Your first post, that I replied to, is the only one that I read. Beyond that I have no idea … I was not annoyed if I was the one you were referring to … simply injecting my thoughts based on your comments. No malice perceived none intended.
