The Schrade Walden 153 Uncle Henry...Golden Spike & Schrade 153UH variations..

What about this 153 from the same Australian collector. He has some nice knives.

Good afternoon! It appears I have come across a Walden 153 as well, which I am trying to price. Any ideas as to where it would fall in value?

My sincerest apologies. I don't belong to many forums (only two now) and failed to read the rules. Please disregard my question. The number is 00773. A friend of mine has offered to sell it to me to hunt with, but tasked me with finding its value (neither of us are collectors and knew nothing of this knives apparent rarity). I searched for the 153 and found prices for it but I knew this one was older and in my opinion better and thus more valuable than what is available today. That's how I wound up here.

If you planning to buy a used knife to hunt with, the number one thing I would look for is blade wear. When some people sharpen a knife they inadvertently remove too much material from the blade. I would also look carefully at the condition of the sheath. The factory sheaths are very nice but at this point would be about 40 years old and hopefully was cared for. I hope you get this knife. Take a picture of it being used in the field and post it. Good luck.

Thanks. I've added this serial to the earlier list of known SW 153UH serial numbers. While these knives are uncommon and therefore desirable to some dedicated collectors, condition and completeness is very important in resale value. Box, papers and sheath? Condition of blade, handle and guard? All of these factors come into play. I gave $38.00 for mine on that auction site in May. It was mislisted and incomplete (no box, papers or sheath) though in fair to good used condition. There were only two bidders beside myself. What you have to work out with your friend is what the knife is worth to YOU, given all of the factors I have mentioned. I would say that to a dedicated collector, it would be valued slightly more than the later Schrade marked knife in similar condition and completeness. You can survey completed sold listings on the auction site to get an idea of those current prices.

Thanks for the advice James! It (the blade) appears to be in good condition, the sheath and original stone and flawless. His wife bought it new in 72-73, he used it one year and it has been in the original box since (was oiled prior to storing). I would love to have it, and maybe between him and I we can determine a fair price. If I buy it I will sure do so! Thanks again!

Thank you Codger! Having read through this thread I've become very interested in this and hope to make a deal with my buddy. When I can figure out how I will post a picture of it. It's a beautiful knife in my opinion! Thanks again guys, I'm out of my element here.

This is one of the details we are still to puzzle out. At first, they had the tang stamp, blades and components, and sheaths and papers. At what point did they begin the gold foil printing on the slip top gift boxes and retire the early gold foil stickers? Was it sooner or later than the switch in tang stamps and papers?

Mwbrown1979, if you cannot figure out how to post the pictures, email them to me or one of the other members and we will post them for you.

My SCHRADE 153UH came in a brown box and was not numbered and came with all its' paperwork; so the brown box does not indicate an early knife.
Is there any chance, that gold sticker came from somewhere other then the knife factory.
Maybe it came from another company celebrating the same Anniversary.

I for one, have been matching information for the past 40 years (like Anniversary stamps placed in books etc..)Ken.
This is what you need: This is for one of my Schrade RL2s, it tells its' own story.
