The Science Behind Sharpening (Here at Bladeforums)

Sputnick,
Thank you for your direction. All points taken.

On the webpage and sharing issue, I have done (in the past) what I can in this regard. Those who know me know this is true. I have no "scientific" data pages to peruse to support my theories and opinions though. I offer what I do from my experience, and like yourself, people can take what they want from it and leave behind what they may. I can only attest that I speak from my experiences and not those of others.

For those of you who see this as simply a "rant" or a "whine" then either you don't know about what I speak or you don't want to know.

Either way, I could care less, as my purpose of this is to shed light on a subject that most know exists (here at Bladeforums).

still waiting for you to specify what are the lies about sharpening. Be specific.

As if anyone didn't already know about diamond hones and wetstones. What about convex edges? How do you sharpen your convex edges (without power tools) So far you have not mentioned anything that isn't common knowledge.

Here's a few questions i defer to your experience on.

What finish and edge geometry do you recommend for the following blades and steels relative to their uses.

M2 steel ~rc60-62, 5" long, .115" thick. It is used for camping as well as general utility around the house when i need a strong fixed blade. It used to cut a variety of materials from plastics to wood to apples, but is generally either push cut or sliced almost never is it used for chopping anything harder than an onion.

440a, 3" long, thin blade. This sucker is used for everything a pocket knife needs to do. Stripping wire, opening boxes, slicing-peeling food, sharpening sticks, slicing skin for splinter removal, etc.

Sputnick,
This is going to be a very general answer to your specific questions so I'm sorry.

Coarser edges for every knife but kitchen knives.

I would put whatever edge works the best for the intended job. Not being wise here (I swear) it's just this simple.

OK, since I don't have the time to continue with my contributions to this thread I'm going to have to bid it farewell.

I've said what I needed to say and I'm now going to give Cliff what he wants and what every other reasonable person has done before who has felt this way....

I will be on my merry way and will post here no more. I leave you to your thoughts.

What is it with the information-free threads lately?

First it's a rant (I'm sure justified) against 'bladesmithing voodoo' with precious few examples because noone wanted to start a flame war, and now a meaningless thread about sharpening ...

well balanced people do not start threads like these! at least without any examples of what the problem is! forums of this nature do not exist for basic entry level info only! if you dont think of your thread as a rant;it is at least making a big deal out of virtually nothing! you may not see it but this is the way liberals make talking points.

Sounds like someone is fixated on Cliffy. The secret to Cliff is to ignore him. Seems like someone has a thin skin and doesn't want to discern on their own. Have you attempted to try what Cliff suggested about stropping on paper to form your own conclusion, or are you just throwing a tantrum? I'd say the later based upon this thread.

BTW, nice answer to sputnick..."rough edges"....talk about technique! Good luck with your "call to arms". I see a real revolution in the making.

I wont comment on the appropriateness of this thread but state simply what I do with any piece of information I am given. I verify it.

If i read something about sharpening thats supposed to be better, i try it. If it works, great, if not than thats that.

If you think someone elses methods are innacurate or less effective than a technique you are aware of by all means, share it. Thats what this place is about. I'm a scientist, not a politician. Words mean little. I dont watch the news because its full of politics and politics are full of beliefs and opinions. We are at war right now because of some ones opinion regarding weapons of mass destruction, etc, etc. Nobody got shot when we learned about electron shells.

I am NOT taking sides or defending anyone here. However, Mr stamp has a webpage dedicated to his experiences in the knife world that users are invited to evaluate. Perhaps you could share some of your experiences and knowledge (as contrary as they may be) and let your peers validate it for themselves.
Awesome post, well said!!

Waaaahhhh....momma!! :D

Yeah, I'm as fixated with Cliffy as you are with me. :D

--Dave--

Damn it - I posted again. :p

Maybe this group only deserves answers like "rough edges". Did that cross your mind? :D

I'm off to write a thesis....

I forgot to take my meds and then started reading Cliff's BS, what did you expect to happen? :D

--Dave--

Rat, You're kidding, right? You must be because I'm laughing. :D

--Dave--

No, I am not kidding. I have yet to see any information about sharpening from you, and zero evidence of the lies you claim are floating around here.

BTW, inappropriate laughter is a sign of mental illness.

--Dave--

So you are leaving without actually giving any information at all?

You have said nothing.

-Zero information about your methods

-Zero information about how other methods are incorrect.

Please point out this "contribution" you speak of.

Rat,
I'm just trying to fit in. I figure that if I ramble on enough and blow enough self promoting smoke that I'll be the new expert in town. Boy, that's a goal to shoot for, isn't it?

--Dave--

Shoot, why wait for the votes to come in, I decided to appoint myself as "King of All Sharpeners". You will all bow to my edges. :D
